In Lycia, two main wolf packs controlled the majority of the world: the Sol pack, wolves derived from the sun god Apollo, and the Luna pack, wolves derived from the moon goddess Artemis. Like the twin gods, both packs were equal in power and beauty but had different abilities. The Sol pack was renowned for their powerful magical abilities, a sign of their connection to the sun. Their skin was sun-kissed and radiant, as if they had bathed in sunlight since the dawn of time, complemented by gold or green-colored eyes and jet-black hair like raging waves. The Luna pack was known for their ability to shift at will into their wolf forms because of their connection to the moon. Their skin was as black as obsidian, yet it seemed to shine as if covered in moonlight, complemented by purple or red-colored eyes and silver hair like silk.
Each pack was run by a single dominant Alpha called a Prime, with its own culture and laws. Everything was based on rank within both packs, with Alphas at the top, followed by Betas, Omegas, and then dormants. Pack leaders, or regular Alphas, were assigned to different places around the world within each pack's territory. They answered to and reported directly to the Primes regularly so they could maintain order and stability.
Your rank determined your place in the world based on your second gender, which typically presented at birth. After the age of 18, if you had not presented, you were automatically considered dormant, regardless of your status or lineage. For example, an Alpha, Beta, or Omega who did not present by age 18, even if born from a Prime, would be cast out by their families and treated as a dormant. Dormants were treated worse than Omegas, which was saying a lot considering Omegas were already at the bottom of the hierarchy.
The worth of an Omega was determined by the worth of their mate; if they had no mate, they were considered worthless—pawns to be used however their Alpha saw fit. Dormants, on the other hand, were deemed useless. They couldn't produce the adequate amount of pheromones needed to take their place in any pack. They weren't even able to sense them, making them difficult to control even for a Prime. Consequently, most were banished from their home packs or chose to leave out of fear of discrimination. Even Omegas looked down on dormants.
Relationships between the two packs were amicable, but tensions began to rise due to the dormants' actions in recent years. The dormants started rebelling against the Primes' rule, but each pack blamed the other for the actions of their respective dormants instead of taking responsibility. This caused greater friction between the two packs. Dormants could travel between territories since their nonexistent pheromones made them difficult to detect. If they were caught in another pack's territory, they were subjected to that pack's laws and often treated as rogues in their punishment.
Over the last fifty years, dormants managed to gain a foothold in the world, beating the odds against the oppression of the Primes. Although significantly outnumbered by all the ranking wolf populations, they continued fighting for their right to survive. There wasn't much they could do against the werewolves of the Luna or the magic of the Sol; at least, that's what the arrogant Primes constantly preached. Instead of listening to the pleas of their people for fairness, they cracked down even harder. Little did they know they would be the direct reason two worlds collided, causing a shift that would change both packs forever.
