"Thank you all for coming. As you all know, crime in this city is only increasing and the need for heroes is more prevalent than ever. We commend all of you for your hard work and sacrifice each day in the line of duty. However, some issues still remain unsolvable and need to be taken care of. My second in command, Rhys, will be appointed Chief Agent of the Hero Society Task Force also known to civilians as the Salty City Task Force." Said Director Jeff, leader of the Hero Society. "Thank you sir, I am honored to be given this opportunity." Said Rhys. "Now you all may be wondering, who will be under Rhys' command? Well, I've given it some thought and have selected the four best candidates for the job, two of which are here at Hero Society. Please come on up, Slinky and Laughing Matter!" Jeff announced. "Jeff, we can't thank you enough for allowing us to be your best choice in this decision." Said Slinky. "Imagine all the doughnuts…" Matter said. The audience all laughed. "The other two individuals that I have chosen are classified and as such I will only be disclosing their codenames. It is my pleasure to welcome Roswell and Higgins." Said Jeff. Two guys showed up on a video screen and one of them spoke up and said "Sir, we are locked and loaded." "Well, with that, the Task Force may commence and the rest of you get back to work." Jeff concluded.
"Wow. I can't believe we are doing this!" Matter said. "I know! We must be the best in the business in Jeff's eyes." Said Slinky. "No, you're the only ones who put in a volunteer slip. The rest were too cowardly to work with Roswell and Higgins." Jeff chimed in. "Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to ask Gen to fix my vocabulary cause I sounded way too smart today." He said. As he walked away, he twirled his moustache and kept muttering the word yes in a fancy way. "What was in his coffee this morning?" Slinky asked. "I dunno but let's head to our new jobs. I wanna meet our new bros." Matter said.
"Listen up. Our first case is regarding a villain who has been caught by Rubbish Man. Apparently, he took a girl hostage and won't tell us her location. Higgins, take Matter and try to get that info out of him. Slinky and Roswell, go investigate all of his known past locations." Rhys debriefed. "Yes, sir!" They all said. In the car, Slinky sat in the driver seat and Roswell slid next to him. "So, uh, I'm Slinky. You probably knew that already though, heh." Slinky said. The name's Roswell. It's a pleasure. I've of course gone over your files and I must say you are the smarter one out of you two." Said Roswell as he was chewing a toothpick. "Well, I guess." Said Slinky flattered. "Where do you want to head first?" He asked. "He frequented a doughnut shop on Rosemary street. Might be a good place to start." Slinky said. "Agreed." Roswell nodded.
Meanwhile…
"Whassup, Higgy? I'm Matter. I can see you're putting on a tough act but don't worry, it's not necessary around me." Matter said. Higgins pulled down his sunglasses and had a long look at Matter. "Hahaha. You are a funny one, little chicken. Let's get this guy to talk." Said Higgins. They both entered the room and sat down across from the villain. "Ay. I ain't gonna talk. Take your crap and shove it." He said. Higgins burst out of his chair and grabbed the villain by the throat. "Do you want to find out what happens when I squeeze too hard?" Higgins said. Matter cleared his throat. "Higgins. Move aside." Said Matter. Higgins let him go and sat back down. "Do you mind if you leave us for a minute?" Asked Matter. He thought for a moment and said "You better have a good plan." After Higgins walked out Matter said "Look. I'm not supposed to say this but you are slated to get executed. Now, I can put in a good word and prevent that but I'm gonna need some motivation." He said. "What? They're gonna kill me?! OK! OK! I'll talk. Just don't let them kill me." The villain said. A few minutes later, Matter walked out of the room and Higgins was waiting. "I know where the hostage is." Matter said. Higgins chuckled to himself and said "Well. I guess even you can be a good detective if you really try."
"The doughnut shop was a dead end and the girlfriend's apartment didn't have anything either." Roswell said. "Thanks bro, I owe you one." Said Slinky as he got off the phone. "What was that about?" Roswell asked. "We know where the girl is. Matter got the perp to talk." Slinky explained. They drove to a hotel and went up to the receptionist. "SCTF. We need to know if this guy has a room here." Roswell said as he pointed to the villain's name and profile. "Why, yes. He booked room 3F." The receptionist said. They both darted up the stairs and stopped by the door. "Ready?" Asked Slinky. Roswell nodded and they busted the door down. "Bathroom is clear." Roswell said. "Kitchen is clear." Said Slinky. "It doesn't seem like there's anyone here." Concluded Roswell. "Shh." Slinky said. There was silence but Slinky had heard something. "Can you hear that?" He asked. "I don't hear anything." Replied Roswell. Slinky walked around and then pinpointed what he heard in the bedroom. He got down on his knees and shined a light under the bed. There was a girl, roughly in her preteens, with her hands tied and her mouth covered with tape. All she could do was make muffled sounds with her mouth. Roswell pulled her out and Slinky untied her. She cried as soon as the tape came off her mouth. "It's OK. We came to save you." Slinky said. The two of them went back downstairs with the girl in tow.
They drove back to HQ and walked inside. "You found her?! Matter said. "Yeah all in a day's work." Slinky said. Rhys came out of his office. "Boys, you've done well. Let's celebrate our first successful case." He said. All of them ate cake and everyone was talking and having a good time. The girl was sitting on a chair and Slinky was off getting some more cake when Matter came over. "So. I hear Slinky saved you, huh?" He asked. She nodded and before she could say anything, Rhys walked through the door with a man. The girl's eyes widened and she ran over to him to give him a hug. "Take care, you two!" Slinky said. He walked up to them and then looked at the girl. "Don't run away and make your dad sad, OK?" He said. She looked surprised and said "How did you know I ran away?" "I'm a detective. I know a runaway when I see one." He said. Do you promise?" Slinky asked again. "I promise." She said. The girl and her dad walked into the elevator and left. "Our first case was a rousing success." Slinky said. "That was fun!" Matter said as he gave him a noogie. "Alright. Let's finish off that cake. Higgins keeps eyeing it for seconds." He said.
"Good. I'm glad it went well. I expect our numbers to drop in the coming months. Keep me updated." Said Jeff. "Will do, sir." Rhys said as he hung up the phone.
