I remember the first time I saw the river in my city, the Red River, with crystal clear waters. I was only 5 years old. Today, at 17, I can barely consider the place where I played. Pollution and corruption consumed Nova Terra, my hometown. I grew up in a small apartment with my parents, Maria and Carlos. My father worked in the local chemical industry and my mother was a nurse. I always liked reading books, spending hours studying and dreaming of a better world. Everything changed when our biology teacher, Mr. Almeida, showed a documentary about the impact of pollution on the environment. That reality hit me deep. I started reading everything about ecology and sustainability.
My room became a sanctuary of books, articles and photos of natural landscapes. A forest fire near the house, caused by industrial negligence, was the trigger. I saw the fire devour the forest, I felt the pain and the anger. I couldn't stay any longer. "I can't pretend I don't see it anymore! I have to do something!", I shouted, looking at the fire. But this current atmosphere, this apocalyptic climate, was not always like this. I remember my childhood as a colorful blur. When I was 5 years old, I played in the park with my father, while my mother watched us smiling. New Earth was a vibrant place, full of life. But, little by little, the colors disappeared.
Seeing the Red River for the first time was magical.
Crystal clear waters, fish swimming... It was my paradise. But soon, the river began to change. The water became cloudy, the fish disappeared and the smell of chemicals took over. I started to notice changes in my city. Factories appeared, pollution increased and people complained. My father, an industrial worker, was tired and worried. My mother, a nurse, talked about respiratory diseases. Going to school was never the same again, that smoke that never ended, irritated my eyes, and the sound of the stray dogs' agony due to the city's heavy air was sad. I could no longer pretend I didn't see. Something inside me desperate. I need to act. As I watched the polluted river, I asked myself: My heart pounded with a mixture of anger and determination. I will discover the truth and act. The search for answers was just beginning. Íris reflected on this question, considering several perspectives The dinner table is no longer as normal as it was that night at dinner time Iris went to the dinner table with her parents, Maria and Carlos. The smell of smoke hung in the air, reminding her of the forest fire. Iris: (frustrated) Father, mother, how can we continue living like this? The pollution, the dirty river... It's as if no one cares.
Maria: (worried) Iris, we know it's difficult, but your father works in the industry. It is our livelihood. Carlos: (defensive) And I do what I can, Íris. But changes take time. Iris: (indignant) Time? How long? Until New Earth becomes uninhabitable? Maria: (calmly) Iris, understand. Your father is not responsible for the pollution. Iris: (challenging) But he can choose not to contribute. We can fight for change. Carlos: (firm) Iris, you don't understand how it works. The industry is powerful. Iris: (determined) I understand more than you think. And I'm going to do something. Maria: (anxious) Iris, be careful. We don't want problems. Iris: (holds up) I won't shut up, mom. It's time to act. The silence that followed was heavy, reflecting the divide between generations and views. Iris: (firm) Father, we can't ignore it anymore! Pollution is suffocating us! Carlos: (irritated) Iris, don't get involved in things you don't understand! It's just politics. Iris: (passionate) Politics? It's our life! Maria: (intermediating) Carlos, Íris is right. The situation is unsustainable.
Carlos: (defensive) And what do you suggest? That I lose my job? Iris: (determined) I don't want you to contribute to this destruction! Carlos: (raising his voice) You can't decide that! Maria: (calmly) Stop! Let's not disagree. The silence that followed was heavy. Iris indignantly gets up from the table, having abandoned her daughter's dinner, and walks towards the stairs. Iris climbed the steps, feeling suffocated by her father's words. He closed the bedroom door, as if he could block out his worries. The window, once open to let in fresh air, now posed a threat. Iris closed it tightly, trying to block out the smoke and heavy thoughts. She threw herself on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Tears of frustration flowed. Unanswered questions plagued his mind:
Iris took a deep breath, feeling an internal flame burning brighter. She knew she couldn't give up. The silent room became a refuge to plan his next move. Iris gets out of bed, sitting down before getting up and walks to the desk, surrounded by papers, books and notes. She knew she needed a solid plan to face what was devastating her city. Iris thinks: Expose the truth about river pollution. Mobilize the community. Pressure the authorities. 1. Scientific research. 2. Photos and videos of pollution. 3. Testimonials from residents. Iris organize everything she can to start the changes Iris looked at the plan, feeling determined. It was just the beginning. Íris decided to start blogging. He chose a name: “New Clean Earth”. He started typing: "New Earth, our home, our future. Why do we allow it to be destroyed?" She paused, thinking about her next sentence. The sound of the door opening. "Iris, what are you doing?" asked his mother. "I'm just studying, mom," Iris replied, quickly closing the laptop. But his mother noticed something" entered the room leaving the door open
Iris hesitated, not knowing how to respond to her mother. "Iris, you're not weighing that, are you?" His mother said, with a discerning look. "No, mother. I'm just worried about the future", replied Iris, trying to be covert. Her mother sent herself to her side. "I know what it's like to feel helpless. Your father He... Don't do anything to harm him, his work in those uzimas is the only thing I fear I know that regime...* She pauses briefly as if the memories hurt her inside *Soon she says*iris, don't give up on dreaming Iris felt a shiver. Her mother didn't know it, but it had just lit a fire inside her. "Thank you, mother", said Iris, hugging her. At that moment, Iris knew she was not alone. She returned to her laptop, completely refreshed "New Earth, our home, our future. We will not give up."....
In a New Earth devastated by pollution and corruption, Íris, a 17-year-old girl, decides to fight against the system. With determination and courage, she faces family, political and environmental challenges to transform her city. A story of resistance, hope and change.
