I've never been one to stay still. My mother always got onto me about it. "Sit down!" She'd say, "Be still! What good are you to me if you don't succeed and prevail?" Oh and, "A young woman must sit properly! I did not raise you to be a slackened bum! Do I make myself clear? You are a woman of high standards-" yadda yadda yadda. 'Cross ya legs, sit up straight. Wear this. Be cute. It's uncomfortable, but it's worth it.' She never lays off of me. I hate wearing lingerie and putting on dresses and skirts. I hate high heels and make up. And I really hate lace and jewelry. I was always powerful for my age. With my power, Reflector, I could go invisible to any naked eye and fight my battles unseen. I always tried to put that behind me, though, so that my mother couldn’t use anything against me as a way of punishment. But I always felt like something, no, some-ONE was missing from my life. I never ask mother about it anymore, she'd say it's a grown folk's place to think of someone else. But I'm not talking about love, at least I don't think I am. I'm an independent woman, but it keeps bothering me.
I lay in my bed, prepared to fight the men that come in and out. It's like my mother wanted to auction me to each and everyone of them for money, but none of them had enough. I hear her talking to someone down stairs so I steadily creep down the hallway from my huge bedroom and crouched behind the corner. "Yatoga, that girl of yours is a fine woman. Enchanting indeed. I'll give you twenty-five thousand dollars to take her off your hands and tame her." My mother tsked at this. I thought she was going to stick up for me. I was glad. Until..."Tsk tsk tsk. Demaris, you sicken me. Twenty-five is not enough. raise the price to seventy-five then we'll talk." I felt sick to my stomach. She was really trying to use me for her own benefit. If I had a father, I would understand why he left her petty life. "Fine," the man said walking towards the hallway, "I'll take her now if you don't mind. I have things I want to do with her. You're a horrible person for lying to everyone, Yatoga. That boy is a killer now." She sighed, uncaring of his words. "Demaris, you think I actually care about him? All i need is my pay." I ran back into my room, as I heard footsteps coming closer. He knocked on my door ever so slightly. He was the first to do a thing like this.
"Ms. Onis? I would like for you to come with me. I have something important I must discuss with you." Oddly, I actually came to the door. "How would you like to save lives? Have a life full of adventure? It's going to be dangerous but-"
"I'LL DO IT!" I yelled, interrupting him. "Let me go pack!" I knew then and there, my life was going to change, thanks to my greedy mother.
