I live in the world where there is no love and if you fall in love you become an outcast and jailed or killed. Humans now are chosen by DNA to see who will match up to produce a healthy child. Then they are to attempt to reproduce til they are able to have a child. Once pregnant the parents will both move on and live different lives seperately. Once the baby is born it is given to a house robot where they grow up alone and the only thing they have is the robot to talk to. The child grows up alone and is schooled at home from when they are three-years-old until they are twenty-years-old.
The only time they leave the house is to run errands. Love was a thing humans used to do back thousands of years ago when we left earth. Earth became so unliveable after the nuclear war it was before the true peace of the United City was in charge. I'm sitting here in jail because I broke the law. I fell in love. I did this to myself and I know I'm going to die for this and that is okay. To me it was worth it.
2 weeks before hand
It was the first day of my new job for the United City. I was going to be a computer technician hand. It was one of the highest jobs you can start off with. I was going to work in Sector Two which is the closest you can be to the top. In 30,089,954 students, I was one of the top 10,000 students who had the highest test scores in the world, me ranking in 50s. Humans have grown so much that most of us have to live on different worlds or as the higher class. I was one of the higher class that lived on the main planet, United City. The ones that don't shape themselves to United Cities standards are cast off to the Outlands. Most of those people die in the Outlands and some make a life there.
I don't know how when there's literally nothing out there other than dirt and empty waste lands. Every year about 2,000,000 of the people that failed the testing are sent out to the Outlands. That is the only way you are able to live here is if you are useful to it. Thats how it has been for a very long time.
All that doesn't matter to me becuase I made it, but of course I would. I promised my Robot-Keeper that I would never be like the people she told me about in her stories that she would tell me.
Right now I'm standing in front of the Section Two Technition hall. It is so big if it were to fall it would kill so many peeople that could be easily replaced in no time. Thankfully there is no way for that to happen to this place. It has such high security that the only way to get in is if they have your DNA on file. If you're an unknown then you are killed or thrown off of the site right away. Though the only time someone was killed is when they said they were not going to leave unless they got what they wanted and what they wanted was the city to die.
"Well, Rune, this is the it, no more standing around like a peace of art. If you stand there you're going to make me break a wire or drip oil."
I turned to my keeper and smiled. "Yes, Kelly, you are right and I wouldn't dare get a new keeper after you have taken so good care of me." I looked at her and thought about what it would be like to be her. Kelly. An emotionless robot, programmed with the capabilities of a caregiver. There was only 300 of her specific kind made, the kind that actually could talk so emotionally to their subjects. The person who birthed me made sure I had the best keeper in life. I'm very thankful to her for that. I have been raised to think and say I'm thankful and happy because of her and I hope she is living a long United life.
I start walking up to the stairs and my Keeper leaves for home where she will clean until 5:00 P.M. and then make a meal for me, then ready the shower, then lay out my night clothes. The same thing every day til either she combusts or I die.
"Hello, welcome to Section Two Technology for the United City. How may I help you today?" The cold dead stare was new. It must be the lastest nonemotional robot that Kelly told me about. She said I would start seeing those kind a lot more now that I am working. It was formed to look like the stereotypical assistant, but robotic. How trivial. She had no arms and only one leg that at the end was a wheel. She was all silver like everything else in this world. She didn't have lips but had a small intercom for a mouth. Her eyes were cameras, staring into what felt like my soul. With the cameras all she saw was my outline, and everything little thing about me, all the way down to my blood type.
"I'm here to start my job on Level 569 Computer Techniction and Living Home Protection."
A few clicks from somewhere in the robot and then she stood up gracefully from her seat. "Hello, yes, Miss Rune, thank you for choosing Section Two to start your life. Within five years you will be selected to have a 9 month generation collection. Your DNA will be matched with the best choice to you and your work level. The higher your level the more likely the child will be healthy and you are able to pass down what ever you please to the child. Note you cannot name the child they will come up with that on their own. " As she was talking she led me to an elevator and pushed a button, and the doors closed.
She kept talking to me about what I am going to do and how I do it and what it makes my life like and how I live and die doing the same thing every day. Once the elevator stopped, after what felt like forever, and we continued walking down a long isle full of cubicles. We talked until we got to my new desk and someone was standing there. "Oh and this is the President of your Sector. He is here to talk to you and teach you about the job more then I am programmed for."
She bowed to us and left. I looked back to the man who was going to be my boss for the rest of my life, I forced a kind smile and he smiled back.
"Hi, you must be Rune, I'm Mr. Pathose, and I have some rules for you to know and to help get you settled into your new life. Also, thank you for going to this Sector. The last person to join was over two years ago. Most students now-a-days are having a harder time scoring well. You were the top of your class am I correct? You beat everyone by 726.8 points? It is quite an honor to meet someone of such a high of an IQ. Hopefully the next years students will be better then this year and the years after that."
We talked and he explained rules and laws around here that were the same rules and laws that I have dealt with my entire life because Kelly had drilled them into my brain since I was a child. I'm guessing because the birth giver wanted to make sure I was not a waste of space. Once he was done showing me around and talking to me I thanked him and I started to work on the codes and programming of every day living.
