Welllllcome back, all and sundry! Pretzel 2 Meet U is posting comics again every monday at https://tapastic.com/series/pretzel and I’m returning to post a new Tapastic Comic Review every week as well. This week, I’m reviewing Heroic Shenanigans, a comic here on tapastic from the excellent Haley Martin, aka @nelmathyria!
I first heard about Heroic Shenanigans from the forum post here: http://forums.tapastic.com/t/would-you-like-your-tapastic-comic-reviewed-new-one-each-thurs-3/ where I look for comics to review, and finally got around to reading it in full this week. And let me tell you, I’m glaaaad that I did. It’s a story about the kids and counselors at a Superhero Summer Camp, which is pretty much all I needed to hear to get excited about it. Kinda like a little bit Psychonauts, a little bit X-Men, with its own positive charm.
The three main kids (Henry, Karen, and Emily) each have different relationships with their superpowers and the superhero world in general, which makes for very interesting character dynamics. And characters are what this comic is all about; every page puts characters and their personalities, arcs, and relationships center stage, which helps to sell them well.
Talkin ‘bout art for a second: the first chapter is done in a cool black-and-white papercut style, but starting chapter 2 it switches to more digital inks with colors. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but the cool thing is that it shows a willingness to change, experiment and innovate in art style and technique, which I think is super promising for long-form comics like this one.
You can read Heroic Shenanigans here: https://tapastic.com/series/HeroicShenanigans and follow Haley on twitter and instagram at @NelmaThyria, on tumblr at http://nelmathyria.tumblr.com/. Heroic Shenanigans updates every Wednesday so check it out then.
Let me know what you think of Heroic Shenanigans in the comments below! smell ya later, cool cats
Pretzel 2 Meet U will be featuring some rad guest art and comics over the next few weeks. If you'd like to be featured, shoot us a message or comment here. We'd love to see anything and everything!
:D:D:D:D Awesome, yayy! You can send them to pretzel2meetu@gmail.com. Also, we gotta post em all by Jan 8th, but the sooner the better so I can hopefully space these guest pages out!
Happy holidays, tapastic friends! The latest chapter of P2MU has been kicking off (go check it out at https://tapastic.com/series/pretzel) and you can go post more comics to review on the forum thread at http://forums.tapastic.com/t/would-you-like-your-tapastic-comic-reviewed-new-one-each-thurs-3/
Ok! Let’s get to the review!
I found this week’s comic on the Tapastic main page (under the staff picks a week or so ago) and it’s one of those comics that sticks with you through pure atmosphere. It’s called Black Cormorant, and it’s a haunting and powerful short story, 48 pages long and complete. It’s a retelling of a tale from Edo’s hometown Czaplinek, about Marcel, a young boy who goes on an adventure to uncover the truth in a secret ring. It’s excellent in it’s brevity, in that it leaves you with an very interpretive and haunting punch that really makes you wonder.
One thing I think the comic does really well is that it picks it’s battles and plays to Edo’s strengths really well. Keeping the comic in black/white values with spot color allows Edo’s powerful understanding of light and texture play well with more simple and iconic silhouettes. Similarly, light and direct storytelling in the text allows the images (and more often, the composition and texture of the panels) to be the main storytelling device. And if you know me, you know that I love when visual storytelling takes precedence over complicated text! It helps that the texture, values, compositions, and storytelling are stunningly clear and well executed that makes the comic well worth your time.
You can read Black Cormorant here: https://tapastic.com/episode/530545 and follow Edo on twitter at @villainesayre or check out her art tumblr atvillainesayre.tumblr.com. She also creates another periodic comic on tapastic called Names (that’s currently on hiatus) which you can check out at https://tapastic.com/series/Names.
Let me know what you think of Black Cormorant in the comments below and see you next week!
Howdy tapastifiers~ It’s been a pretty crazy week here, but I’m super excited for the upcoming Pretzel 2 Meet U pages which we’ve been busy writing and thumbnailing and revising and such. But it’s nice to take some time off to read some other tapastic comics and then review them here! This comment was mentioned to me by it’s creator, Chloe Cunningham, on the forum at http://forums.tapastic.com/t/would-you-like-your-tapastic-comic-reviewed-new-one-each-thurs-3/14086 where you should definitely leave more links to comics to review if you’ve got em.
It’s snowing here in Seattle, which means it’s absolutely a great time to review a comic about summer! What could be more fitting? This comic is called Crow Summer, but Chloe Cunningham, and it’s pretty great. It follows Nina, “Student vampire hunter and shoe aficionado”, and her friend-made-through-forced-coercion Reese, navigating a wild & supernatural summer.
It’s on page 25 right now, and the mystery of the first arc - The Birds - is now kicking into some serious paranormal hitchcockian mystery. The story is definitely about the characters in it, and they take center stage. We’re just now getting teased the mysteries of this summer, which I’m sure will provide ample opportunities to see these characters sign. This is abs helped by the strength of the diversity in cast and character design. All of the characters in Crow Summer have distinct color palettes, silhouette shapes, and acting habits that help to really sell the distinction of their personalities.
You can read Crow Summer online at https://tapastic.com/series/crowsummer and follow Chloe online on tumblr at http://wishjacked.tumblr.com/ or on twitter at @wishjacked. Crow Summer updates every Thursday (Friday this week) here on Tapastic.
Comment here on this blog post if you’d have any other comics you’d like to see reviewed, or if you have any thoughts you’d like to share! Stay warm out there, bread eaters!!
Thank you so much for the review, I'm super glad you're enjoying it! (And I always love reading your reviews!!) Enjoy the snow, that DOES sound like a good time to read some summer comics. :)
Great review! I love Crow Summer and I agree with what you've said about all the distinct and fun characters. They defintely stand out in a comic that's shaping up to be super interesting! I don't know if you only review comics that are here on tapastic, but if you're open to others, you should check out Kingstown! http://kingstown.webcomic.ws/ Or you can always review mine ;) https://tapastic.com/series/HeroicShenanigans
Thanks, Haley & Chloe! Haley - I'll definitely add both those comics to the queue, thank you~ I've only done Tapastic comics so far but I'm sure I'll branch out at some point. ;3
Hey you folks! Took time off these reviews for CTNx and Thanksgiving, but back in action now. I want to read your comic recommendations too, so please post them in the comments on this post or on the forum thread here: https://goo.gl/zsJdO1 !! Onto the review~
This week’s comic is just beginning, but I think you’ll have to agree that it’s a pretty sweet one. It’s called Spirit Warriors, and it just started up a little less than a week ago, on the 25th, and they release a new batch of pages every Friday. It follows Aigon and his best friend the weasel Rau on a quest for vengeance.
When I choose the comics to review, sometimes a single thing just catches me and makes me go, “whoah.” This happened with Spirit Warriors, and it was very particularly one element of the comic: the inking. There’s a balance between delicate, sparse definition and bold, impressionistic strokes that’s just… captivating. I think it’s what helps the action in this comic really sing - even without color, text, words, or effects, the panels would read on the strength of the line work alone, and that’s no easy feat. Then add in the other elements to enhance it all!
I will say the stylized and atmospheric color palette, effects, and textures work super well with the lines, and on top of that, it’s designed well for web. Long panel formats, pages that blend into one another, and some clever use of negative space panels help to keep the compositions interesting but (most of all) simple and clear. Which I think is what makes this comic work really well - simplicity plus atmosphere equals top notch.
You can read Spirit Warriors online at https://tapastic.com/series/Spirit-Warriors and support them on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/SpiritWarriors if you’d like to. I personally can’t wait for their next chapters. Please come back next Monday if you’d like to read me & Scotty’s comic, Pretzel 2 Meet U, or next thursday for another Tapastic comic review! Peace out~
