I remember when I was younger, a fairly religious friend told me that he believed - without a doubt - that witches and satanic cults were actually able to manifest some level of magic and influence. Suddenly it felt like he was living in a different world to one I was. In the world I inhabited, they were as deluded as those who believed they could command the heavens to heal the sick or bring wealth. Most of them listened to dreadful music and probably lived on the dodgy part of town you rode your bike through a little quicker in case their dogs or neighbourhood children savaged you. They almost always had mottled grey 1970's carpets in their houses, and bought those weird sculptures with dragons and skulls all over them that would gradually get covered in ash.
Regardless, to him there was a power in symbols and in invoking certain names. I thought that the world he lived in was certainly more exciting, and I wished that I could have made the leap and inhabited it with him. The closest I got was writing this comic, in which there is no question of faith. It's all real here, and there are forces keeping score.
As a bonus, I included a brief summary of countries and a map. There is a large break in time between this chapter and chapter 3, which I am writing and illustrating now. 2016 was a very strange year for me and creatively I fell into a very bad slump.
Four immortal heroes are brought together once more by a sudden and unprovoked attack. They must come to terms with their place in a fantasy world that has moved on from the uncertain mysticism from which they originated. A world where former magical towers have become tired roadside attractions and the mysterious has been mastered.
