Mitsuki Risho was a boy cursed with bad luck. Since the moment he was born, it seemed as if he was set up to always fail. Mitsuki was raised by his mother, Kawakida Risho who was a manager at one of the well-performing offices in Shibuya. The boy never knew his father who left the family around the time he was only a few months old. Mitsuki’s only family was his single hard-working mother and his big sister Otoki Risho.
His life with his small family was relatively peaceful until one fateful day in elementary school. During the lunch period, Mitsuki needed to use the bathroom, but the line was too long for him to wait. Against his better judgment, the boy decided to go to the very back of the building and release his waste behind a bush. He believed that he had privacy until a girl in his class named Akane Tokiko found him.
Being as immature as young kids were, she laughed at the sight of her exposed classmate. Believing that the scene was good for everyone to see, Akane called out to the rest of her classmates to come to the back of the school.
“Hey guys! Come back here! Look what Risho is doing!”
Before Mitsuki could cover himself, almost all of his classmates had run to the back of the building and were witnessing him doing his business. Everyone pointed at him and started laughing their hearts out. The poor boy could do nothing but cover himself behind the bush and cry.
“That’s so gross!”
“Why is he doing it in a bush?”
“What’s wrong with him!?”
Mitsuki prayed for the ridiculing voices and laughter to stop, but nobody batted an eye to his pleas. And even when the day ended, the embarrassing moment was never forgotten.
Weeks have gone by and kids would constantly bring up the event and laugh at Mitsuki’s expense. He was given a cruel nickname, “Brown Pants” which was stabled onto his identity. Mitsuki begged, cried, argued, and even went to the teachers to make the bullying stop, but no one did anything.
And one day, Mitsuki reached his limit. When his class was tasked by their teacher to clean the classroom. Akane went behind him and whispered a horrible little song in his ear.
“Brownie Pants! Brownie Pants~!”
Her obnoxious gigging rang in Mitsuki’s ears. The boy had finally snapped and then retaliated in the worst way possible. He turned around and punched Akane right in her face.
Akane fell to the floor, holding her bleeding nose, and cried at the top of her lungs. Everyone gasped in shock at the scene before them. The last thing they ever expected was for Mitsuki to attack anyone.
Mitsuki was a shy and reserved boy who never acted out in violence. Usually, he never did, but the boy finally reached his limit after weeks of being made fun of.
The teacher hurried to Akane’s side, her nose was gushing blood and tears stained her face. Once the harmed girl was taken to the nurse, the enraged teacher forced Mitsuki to go to the Principal’s office.
In the end, Mitsuki was given detention and when word of what he did reached his mother’s ears she was extremely disappointed.
The moment he got home, Kawakida gave her son a scolding he never forgot.
“How could you do something like that!? Assaulting another student! I thought I raised you better than that! Did you ever stop to think what an action like that will do!? This is horrible! I knew you would be a problem child! If only you were more like your sister…”
To Kawakida, Otoki was close to the perfect child. She was two years older than Mitsuki and she was well-behaved and talented in everything she put her mind to. Otoki always did well in school and was surrounded by friends. Mitsuki paled in comparison. Due to his awkwardness, he had no friends and his grades were not that good. To his mother, it seemed that he would not get far in life. Mitsuki always had a feeling that he displeased his mother and after that scolding his worst fear became a reality.
The remainder of his time in elementary school was just painful memories for Mitsuki. Everyone, even the teachers, treated him like he was a criminal and avoided him.
Mitsuki could only hope that life would get better for him, but sadly this was only the beginning.
A few years later, when Mitsuki reached the age of sixteen, he was admitted to Inoue High School. The boy had hoped that his experience would be better, but his expectations were immediately crushed.
Due to his shyness, lack of friends, and lack of popularity Mitsuki became the victim of intense bullying. A group made up of the most popular kids would take the time of their day to harass Mitsuki.
There was Yakugata Katsubaru, the captain of the boxing club. His three delinquent buddies Sakibe Keiseki, Tomirima Fumomi, and Mizuhoshi Okibaru. And two pretty girls named Fukuyama Hikase and Aibaru Tori.
The leader of this group was Higane Utose, the prettiest and the most popular girl in school. She came from an extremely rich family, her father Higurashi Utose being the President of CLN Company, an extremely profitable computer science corporation. Because of her money and stasis Higane was treated like a queen everywhere she went. Even the teachers would be kind to her even if she was late to class or disruptive. If anyone complained about the things she did they would quickly find their lives to be miserable. Teachers were even fired if they did so much as look at Higane Utose with an angry gaze for her disturbance in class.
Higane Utose also used her title of Queen of Inoue High to make people less popular suffer, Mitsuki Risho was unluckily her constant victim. The six popular kids would force him to do tasks such as getting food or buying cigarettes and even taking money straight from his wallet. Yakugata and his boys would also beat Mitsuki if he ever talked back or if they were in a bad mood.
And as the three girls would attack Mitsuki Higane, Fukuyama, and Aibaru would laugh hysterically at the scene and record it with their phones.
For all his time in high school, Mitsuki dealt with their abuse, and no matter what he said to the staff, no one would act out of fear of Higane Utose. He did not even bother to tell his mother or sister about the bullying believing that they would not even bat an eye to help him either.
There was one silver lining in Mitsuki’s second year of high school though. There was an anime and manga club that he decided to join. The club only had two members which were boys from two different classes. Their names were Matsuka Sakira and Isoki Keinaga. They were both nobodies like Mitsuki and the three got along due to their similar interests.
After a long day of classes, Mitsuki would make it a habit to go down to the anime club and hang out with Matsuka and Isoki. The three would either watch anime, play video games, or read the latest chapter of their favorite manga series. They could pretty much do whatever they wanted during that time which they enjoyed. To Mitsuki, it was the time of the day that truly brightened his life, until…
“This is a nice and spacious room!”
Higane and his group suddenly invaded the anime and manga club room. The three boys were shocked but they could not do anything as the six popular kids took snakes from the closet and sat on the desks. They threw down manga and DVDs as if they were garbage and were basically ruining the room.
Matsuka and Isoki trembled in fear and did nothing but sit back as the six kids did whatever they wanted, but Mitsuki's patience was at its end. With an angry expression, he stood and yelled at Higane.
”What are you doing here!?” Mitsuki shouted. “This is our club room, get out!”
Higane put her hands up defensively.
“Relax! We’re just trying to find a place to chill! Just came back from tennis and I am all sweaty!”
“I don’t care! Get out!”
“Hold on there buddy!”
Yakugata came behind Mitsuki and put his arm around his neck. The strength of the taller and muscular teenager was enough to nearly choke all the air out of the smaller boy.
“You better watch your tone unless you wanna get hurt!”
Mitsuki gasped aloud as he tried to speak.
“Y-you can’t do this! You guys can’t just come into this room and do whatever you want unless you are a part of the club!”
“Then make us a part of the club!”
Said Sakibe excitedly.
As Yakugata finally let Mitsuki go, the smaller boy coughed aloud and looked at Sakibe with a glare.
“Do you guys even read manga or watch anime?”
Higane, Fukuyama, and Aibaru laughed aloud in response to Mitsuki’s question.
“What sane people would be interested in the crap you guys absorb?”
Fukuyama chuckled as he wiped the tears from his face.
“Seriously. The art looks atrocious.”
Saying those words was Aibaru, who was picking up an opened manga that was lying on the ground. That action did not go unnoticed by Matsuka.
“H-hey!”
The overweight boy got up and ran over to the pretty girl with a worried expression all over his face.
“That’s mine!”
But before he could even get close, Tomirima punched Matsuka in the stomach. The overweight boy fell on his knees as he groaned aloud in pain. The other popular kids laughed at the sight of his pain.
“Getting a little too excited there, fatty,” Tomirima said with a snarl.
As Matsuka was on the ground, Aibaru continued to read the manga with complete disinterest and disgust.
“This manga is awful, just a bunch of pictures of girls with unrealistic massive breasts and wearing provocative outfits.”
Aibaru threw the manga away while wiping her hand on her skirt.
“T-that’s not true!”
Matsuka lifted his head up and shouted.
“Y-yes the story has a bit of fanservice but the whole theme of the story is do not let the corrupt society win! You see the main character Ren was trying to-“
Higane yawned loudly, silencing Matsuka’s banter.
“Oh shut up, we don’t care! If all you losers are doing is reading porn maybe I should petition for the school to disband this club.”
The three boys turned pale.
“Y-you wouldn’t dare!”
Mitsuki was the only one confident enough to even shout in the face of Higane. The popular girl took it as a challenge.
“Why not? You guys don’t do anything productive other than just sitting around and watching cartoons. You can do that stuff at home! Do something else with your time!”
“This is a place where we can unwind and be ourselves! You have no right and no reason to take that away from us!”
“True, I have no real reason. But I feel like it~...”
Higane then leapt off the table and then headed out the door.
“Going to the teacher, see you losers later!”
“U-...UTOSE!!”
Like an enraged madman, Mitsuki charged at Higane, this sudden action even caused the rich girl to stiffen up in fear. However, Mitsuki quickly received a devastating punch to the face from Yakugata and was thrown to the floor.
“Try some shit like that again and you’re a dead man Risho…”
Mitsuki groaned as he clenched his bleeding nose. Higane giggled at the pitiful sight of Mitsuki.
“Bye-bye ~!”
Mitsuki quickly picked up his head—face resembling that of an enraged bloody serial killer. With a mighty scream, he managed to run past Yakugata and tackle Higane when behind. The two fell over on the ground, landing very hardly on the floor of the school.
Unbeknownst the kids however, another phenomenon took place at the same time, one they could not see.
Appearing right above Mitsuki and Higane just as the tackle happened was a sliding door that rested right above the ceiling of the school. The doors opened and falling out was Yin and Yang who were both bruised and bloodied.
Yin phased through the body of Mitsuki Risho while Yang phased through the body of Higane Utose.
“Higane!?”
Aibaru cried out in a worried voice.
“Hey, Higane! Are you alright!?”
Away from the world of reality was a black void. Inside was the injured Yang who was sitting alone and pouting.
“What mess have we gotten into now?”
