Rumblings Beneath the Surface
Meanwhile, Alex made his way toward the break room on the R&D floor, his footsteps echoing lightly through the corridor. His thoughts raced back to the growing pile of questions. Every new discovery brought a wave of unease, as if he were standing on the edge of a much larger cliff, unable to see the bottom. Pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, but the full picture remained frustratingly out of focus.
To his relief, he spotted Lila in the break room, hunched over a bubbling potion that glowed faintly on the countertop. The room was quiet, save for the faint hiss of magical steam rising from her vial, which curled lazily in the air. When she looked up and saw him, her face lit with a smile that chased away some of the tension hanging over him, like the first beam of sunlight after a storm.
“Hey, Alex!” Lila greeted, her red hair catching the light as she swirled the potion. “How’s the investigation going?” The gleam of curiosity in her eyes was unmistakable—Lila thrived on mystery and discovery, especially when magic was involved.
Alex leaned against the counter, reaching for a cup of coffee. He inhaled the rich, bitter aroma before answering, “Not bad. We’ve got some leads, but things are getting more... complicated.” He gave her a knowing glance. “Nina’s working her magic—literally.”
Lila raised an eyebrow, her fingers pausing over the potion. “Complicated, huh? Sounds like my kind of mess.” She set the vial down, turning fully toward him, the playful spark in her eyes not quite masking the concern beneath. Lila might have enjoyed chaos, but even she could sense when things were starting to spiral into dangerous territory.
“Yeah. Turns out someone’s been spying on us,” Alex said, his voice dropping as if the walls themselves might have ears. The revelation still left a bad taste in his mouth.
Her expression shifted, curiosity giving way to something sharper, her fingers twitching near the potion vial as if itching to do something about it. “Any idea who it could be?”
“Not yet. But we’re working on it,” Alex said. For all their digging, the shadows only seemed to grow longer.
Lila tapped her chin thoughtfully, her eyes narrowing as her mind worked through the possibilities. “There’s always a lot of experimentation going on in R&D, you know that. But most people stick to the proper protocols. I did hear whispers, though, about someone up on the upper floors working on... secret projects.”
Alex’s brow lifted slightly, his interest piqued. “Secret projects?”
“Nothing concrete,” Lila replied, waving a hand. “Just rumors, like half of what you hear in this place. But still, it might be worth checking out.”
Alex took a sip of his coffee, his mind wrapping around this new lead. Rumors were often rooted in truth here, though distorted by fear or ambition.
“That’s definitely a good place to start,” he said, setting the cup down. “Actually, we could really use your help. Got any potions that might come in handy for detecting hidden enchantments?”
The spark returned to Lila’s eyes, her face lighting up with excitement. “Funny you should ask.” She reached into a small bag beside her and pulled out a vial filled with iridescent liquid. “I whipped this up after we spoke this morning. Detection potion—it’ll reveal cloaking spells and hidden enchantments. I was going to test it later, but...” She trailed off, grinning as she held the vial up to the light.
Alex blinked, impressed but not surprised. “You’re always one step ahead, aren’t you?”
Lila laughed. “Well, I do try.” Her confidence, a blend of talent and enthusiasm, always seemed to be her strongest asset.
Lila’s enthusiasm was contagious, and her presence had a way of cutting through the haze of stress. In a world filled with unanswered questions, it was nice to have something tangible—something that could actually make a difference.
As they chatted for a few more minutes, the soft chime of Alex’s scrying orb broke the flow of conversation. Nina’s name flashed across the screen. "Got something. Come quick."
Alex met Lila’s eyes, and her expression tightened, the easy humor fading. “Looks like we’re in business,” he said, pushing off the counter. “Let’s go.”
They hurried to the IT department, their footsteps in sync as they wound their way through the corridors. Every step quickened his pulse, an unspoken urgency pushing them forward.
Nina didn’t waste time as they arrived. “Someone’s using an advanced form of cloaking magic to hide their surveillance spells,” she said, her fingers still tapping against the keys as data streamed across the monitors. “It’s sophisticated. But I managed to trace the source.”
Alex stepped closer, his heart pounding in anticipation. “Where?”
Nina’s gaze met his, grim and steady. “The signal’s strongest in the executive offices. Someone high up is behind this.”
For a moment, silence filled the space between them, the revelation sinking in like a stone. Executive offices. This wasn’t some rogue employee causing trouble—this was someone with serious power. Alex exchanged a look with Lila, both of them aware of how high the stakes had just become.
Alex gave a sharp nod, then turned to Nina. “Can you send all the information to Marcus?”
“Already on it,” she replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
With a final glance at the web of data and glowing runes, Alex left the IT department feeling something he hadn’t in hours—hope. They had a lead. And with Lila’s potion and Nina’s research, they were closer to the truth than they had been before. But there were still far too many questions, and he knew just where to start digging for answers.
On his way to Marcus’s office, Alex nearly collided with Zoe. Her usual sly grin curled at the edges of her lips as she raised an eyebrow.
“Alex Turner,” she teased. “You look like you’re on a mission.”
“Just trying to piece together some strange occurrences,” Alex replied, grateful for the brief distraction. Zoe’s knack for lightening the mood was something Alex had always appreciated, especially now. “Heard anything about secret projects or surveillance spells?”
Zoe’s eyes sparkled, her curiosity piqued. “Surveillance spells? Now that’s juicy. I haven’t heard much, but I know people. Want me to poke around?”
“That would be great, Zoe. Thanks,” Alex said, the tension in his chest easing slightly.
She gave him a wink. “No problem. And if you need a little illusion magic to help with your investigation, you know where to find me.”
With a chuckle, Alex continued to Marcus’s office. For a moment, the tension unwound. Zoe had a way of making everything seem a little less dire—even when the stakes were high.
Inside Marcus’s office, the atmosphere was anything but light. Marcus stood before a large map pinned to the wall, the surface covered in notes and magical markers. He didn’t turn as Alex entered, his focus fixed on the clusters of dots scattered across the map.
“Good timing,” Marcus said, his voice gruff. “I’ve been piecing together the information from the security logs. Take a look.”
Alex stepped closer, studying the map. Each marker represented a hotspot of magical activity—dots clustered around key areas, from the R&D labs to the executive offices. His eyes narrowed as he traced the connections.
“These are all the places where the surveillance spells have been reported?”
Marcus nodded. “Exactly. Most of the activity is centered around the executive offices and R&D, but there are a few other spots—maintenance tunnels, storage rooms. Places that don’t usually see much traffic.”
Alex frowned, his finger brushing over one of the marked areas. “So, they’re hiding spells where no one would think to look. Clever.”
Marcus crossed his arms, his gaze still fixed on the map. “Whoever’s behind this knows what they’re doing. They’ve covered their tracks well.”
“Any idea who it might be?” Alex asked, turning to face Marcus.
“Not yet. But I’m narrowing it down.” Marcus handed him a sheet of paper, the names of several executives scrawled across the top. “These are the people with access to both the R&D labs and those hidden areas. If they’re involved, we need to be damn careful.”
Alex scanned the list, recognizing a few of the names. Powerful people. People with the means to bury the truth if they got wind of it.
Richard Bancroft. As soon as Alex saw the name his breath caught in his throat. He looked up at Marcus, his eyes wide.
Marcus nodded. “Yep. If we make any moves without solid proof...” Marcus’s voice trailed off, but the unspoken warning was clear.
Alex nodded, the gravity of the situation settling over him. “I’ve got Nina working on tracing the surveillance spells. And Lila made a potion to detect hidden enchantments. We’re getting close, Marcus. I can feel it.”
Marcus grunted in agreement. “Just keep me posted. And be careful. If they catch wind of this—”
“They won’t,” Alex interrupted, his voice firm. “We’ll play it smart.”
But even as the words left his mouth, the knot of tension in his chest refused to loosen.
