“Higgins, what do you got for me?” Slinky asked.
“I found this jacket in the cockpit of a suspicious plane that flew off before I could figure out its owner.” Higgins explained.
“I see. Let me run this down to the lab to see if there's something in it that could tell us who we're dealing with.” Slinky said.
A while later, Slinky came back and put down a file on Rhys’ desk.
“This is our guy. Ralph Preston. Forty two. He was friends with Trevor. It seems they liked to fly together quite frequently but as of recently they haven't been seen together. There was one other guy that’s also acquainted with Ralph that would help with the upkeep of the planes named Richard.” Slinky said.
“Can you find out where Ralph or Richard are?” Rhys asked.
“Already ahead of you.” Said Slinky.
“Good. Take Higgins with you and go solve this case.” Rhys said.
Slinky and Higgins drove to a hangar where Ralph was known to be and got out of the car to take a look around.
“Can I help you gentlemen?” Asked a man.
“We're looking for Ralph Preston.” Higgins asked.
“That would be me. What can I do for you?” Ralph asked.
“We were investigating an incident involving your friend Trevor. Have you spoken to him recently?” Slinky asked.
“Oh Trevor? No, I haven't talked with him in a while.” Ralph answered.
“What about Richard?” Higgins said.
“Rich hasn't spoken with him either. What's this all about?” Ralph asked.
As Higgins explained the situation, Slinky noticed someone walking around the hangar by the planes and went over to them.
“Wow that's a nice plane you've got there.” Slinky said.
“Oh, uh, thanks. Just doing some repairs.” The guy said.
“Might I ask for your name?” Slinky said.
“The names Richard but you can call me Rich.” Richard said.
“So Rich, Is this your plane here?” Said Slinky as he motioned towards the plane.
“No, this is Ralph's. I don't own any of these planes, I just do the maintenance.” Richard explained.
Interesting. If I recall, this plane wasn’t listed under his name when I looked up his records.” Slinky said as he scratched his chin.
“Uh, not sure what you’re talking about.” Richard said.
“In fact, the owner of this plane is actually Mr. Lewis. Why would you be in possession of Trevor’s plane?” Slinky questioned.
Richard didn’t know what to say and began to panic. Then, Higgins and Ralph approached to see what was going on.
Ralph saw Richard looking at him in distress and Ralph said “Well boys you best be on your way. We wouldn’t want to keep you from your job any longer.”
“We appreciate that. However, I believe you have something that doesn’t belong to you. That plane you’ve got there is pretty nice. One has to wonder how you could’ve come into possession of it. Perhaps Mr. Lewis didn’t want to part from it but your desire for it drove you to alter the bargain so to speak.” Slinky deducted.
Ralph and Richard looked at each other and started to run away. Higgins sprinted towards Richard and tackled him to the ground and Slinky was just on Ralph’s heels trying to catch up to him. He turned a corner and bumped into Roswell and he fell to the ground. Matter, who was standing next to him, grabbed his arms and cuffed him on the spot. Slinky finally caught up and stopped in front of them trying to catch his breath.
“Phew! I’m glad you guys showed up. Nice work.” Slinky said.
“We figured you might need some backup and Matter wanted fast food so we figured we’d kill two birds with one stone.” Roswell said.
Higgins walked over with Richard in custody and they put both of them into the back of their car before driving to get food and then heading back to the station.
After they put them in jail, Rhys took notice and asked how everything went.
“Well, sir, I figured out that Ralph here had one of Trevor’s planes in his possession and it wasn’t registered at all so I had a hunch which turned out to be correct.” Said Slinky.
“Ah, so Richard wanted Trevor’s plane and Trevor wouldn’t part with it so Ralph made him crash?” Rhys asked.
Close. It was actually Richard who did the deed. You see, Rich was the one who maintained both of their planes and he was the one with the knowledge to make it look like the plane was simply faulty instead of being tampered with. Unfortunately, Ralph made the mistake of leaving his plane unattended which allowed Higgins to nab his jacket. Isn’t that right, gentlemen?” Slinky explained.
“Screw you! Trevor didn’t know what he had! That plane was magnificent and he was letting it sit and collect dust. I have much more appreciation for it and I made a generous offer to him but refused no matter what I said. I didn’t want to kill him but I had no choice! But Rich only did what I told him to do. Don’t be too hard on him.” Ralph exclaimed.
Richard didn’t say anything as he sat in the corner giving Ralph a mean look.
“Nice job boys. I gotta say I wasn’t too hopeful for this case but you certainly exceeded my expectations. Perhaps you might be ready for some harder cases soon. For now let’s celebrate this victory.” Rhys said.
“Hey Matter, nice work bro.” Said Slinky.
“Hey what can I say? I’m a natural detective.” Matter said as he scarfed down some food.
“Higgins, I appreciate your assistance in this case.” Roswell said.
“Ditto, comrade. And Slinky, your help was invaluable today as well.” Said Higgins.
“Oh it was nothing. I just ran some tests and stuff but thanks. I’m glad we were able to solve the case.” Slinky said.
All of them ate until their stomachs were full and left work to go home. The next morning, Rhys was going through several boxes of files. The files included many cases and Rhys put several aside with a note on them indicating they were for the four detectives. As he put the boxes away, words on the side of the boxes could be seen which read: Cold Cases.
