“Alright gentlemen. Today we’ve got a mystery on our hands. Last night there was a plane crash just outside the city but no bodies were found and no records could be dug up for the plane.” Rhys explained as he sipped a cup of coffee through his mask.
“Interesting. Well, sign me up chief.” Said Roswell.
“In that case, take Matter with you and see what you can uncover.” Rhys said as he handed Roswell a folder with all of the case information inside.
“Matter, I’ll let you pick our ride today.” Roswell said as they walked up to several vehicles.
“Alright! I think I’m gonna go with that orange one over there.” He said, pointing towards an old muscle car.
“Nice choice. Let’s roll.” Said Roswell.
They both jumped in and took off towards the downed plane. As they approached it they could see the smoldering ashes of a fire and pieces of the plane scattered about.
“What a mess.” Matter said as he got out of the car.
“No kidding. See if you can find anything that could tell us whoever flew this plane or at least something that can point us in the right direction.” Roswell said.
They both scouted the area for a while, looking for any evidence that might be on the ground nearby.
Out of luck, Roswell approached what was left of the cockpit and noticed a piece of cloth stuck to a shard of glass that used to be a window.
“Well look what we have here.” Said Roswell.
“Ooh, what is it?” Matter asked as he walked over to him.
Roswell turned to Matter and held up the cloth with a glove and said “I think we found our lead. Put this in an evidence bag and bring it back to Rhys and have it scanned for skin, blood, etc.”
“Uh, that’s a lot to remember.” Matte said, scratching his head.
Roswell took out a pen and paper and wrote down the instructions before handing it to Matter and said “Here. I wrote it down so you won’t forget.”
The muscle car could be heard screeching down the road as Matter took off with evidence while Roswell stayed behind and investigated the area further.
“Hm. Looks like our pilot left a light set of footprints over here. Let’s see where this goes.” He said to himself.
Back at the station, Matter handed Rhys the evidence bag with the cloth in it and read word for word the note that Roswell gave him.
“Understood. Good work, son. I’ll have Slinky take a look at this.” Said Rhys as he dismissed Matter.
Rhys called Slinky and he entered his office shortly after.
“Sir, what can I help you with?” Slinky asked.
“See what you can find on this cloth and report what you find to Matter and Roswell who are working the case.” Explained Rhys.
“On it, sir.” Slinky said as he left with the evidence.
Meanwhile, Roswell followed the footsteps until he came to a river. He looked around for more footprints but, after seeing none, he realized they must’ve crossed the river. He looked over at the other side but didn’t see any footprints there either. He thought for a moment, trying to figure out what to do next when his phone rang.
“Hello?” He answered.
“Hey It’s Slinky. I took a look at that cloth you guys found and the computer came back with one result. The name is Trevor Lewis. Age 45. He has a pilot’s license and owns several planes. Strangely though, the plane that he supposedly crashed doesn’t seem to match any of his own. I hope that helps.” Slinky said.
“Thanks. Tell Matter to get his butt over here for backup.” Roswell said.
“You got it.” Said Slinky as he hung up the phone.
Roswell then sent Matter his coordinates and sat along the bank of the river to wait for him. After a while. Matter drove up and got out to meet him as he brought along some wading boots to cross the river. After they made it to the other side, Roswell saw something propped up against a tree and motioned to Matter to be careful. When they approached they saw that it was a body and it had a parachute attached to its back that was deployed.
“Wow, talk about a bumpy flight. He doesn’t seem to be in good shape.” Matter said.
Roswell checked the body over and after failing to detect a pulse he said “Our friend here is no longer with us it seems.”
“Hey, what’s that?” Matter asked as he reached towards a pocket on the inside of the man's jacket where a corner of a piece of paper stuck out.
“Good eye. It looks like a note. Hm, It appears he wanted to write his final thoughts before he died.” Roswell said as he examined it.
“Why are certain letters more bold than others?” Asked Matter.
“Perhaps it’s a code. This case is getting more complex by the minute. Let’s wrap up the body and take it back with us to be properly taken care of.” Said Roswell.
After leaving the area with the body in tow, they arrived at the station with more questions than answers. Slinky walked up to them and held a clipboard with information on the body.
“Hey guys, it looks like the man you found was indeed our pilot, Trevor Lewis. But something’s fishy here. I mean why would he fly a plane he doesn’t own and upon further investigation, the plane wasn’t owned by anyone else either.” Slinky told them.
“Let’s go get some lunch and think this over for a while.” Roswell said.
“Ooh, I second that!” Said Matter as he tried to keep the drool in his mouth.
Meanwhile, Rhys got a call about a plane supposedly found in a parking lot without a pilot to be seen. He called up Higgins and informed him about the case before sending him to check out the second plane.
“Sir, I've arrived on the scene. I’ll let you know what I find.” Said Higgins over the phone.
“Good. I’ll see you back here when you’re finished.” Said Rhys before hanging up.
Higgins looked the plane over and noticed the engine was still warm as if it had been flown recently. He also saw a jacket on the seat inside the cockpit.
“Very interesting.” He said to himself.
He walked back to his car with the jacket and as he put it in the trunk he heard a noise and looked around the car to see the plane promptly taking off.
“Wait! Come back!” Higgins said as he ran after it for several feet.
He stopped and watched it fly off into the sky and eventually out of view.
“Shoot. Guess I better head back and tell Rhys about this.” He said before hopping in the car and taking off to the station.
“Ah, Higgins, what did you find out?” Rhys asked as he walked into his office.
“Well when I got there I didn’t see anyone around but the engine was still warm so someone must’ve flown recently. Also there was this jacket in the cockpit I took.” Higgins said as he held out the jacket.
“Hm. I’ll have Slinky see if he can find anything on it. Was there anything else?” Said Rhys.
“Well when I was putting the jacket in the car, the plane suddenly took off but I couldn’t see who was flying it.” Explained Higgins.
“Well hopefully the others can get to the bottom of this. This jacket is our only lead right now.” Rhys said as he looked at the jacket.
At a restaurant, Slinky ordered a sandwich while Matter gorged himself on a burger he had asked to be specially made.
“Boy, you sure know how to eat.” Roswell said.
“Yeah this is about everyday for him.” Slinky said.
*Ring Ring*
“Hello?” Slinky said, answering the phone.
“It’s Rhys. Higgins found another piece of evidence on the case and I need you to take a look.” Rhys explained.
“Got it. I’ll be right there.” Said Slinky.
