“Aye, the city of Sidusca is like the back of Grommet’s hand to Grommet,” the scar faced bald man grunted, referring to himself in the third person again. “Grommet will take you there and bring you back, milady.”
“How much would that cost?” Iola asked him softly, still unable to quell the unease coursing through her ever since she entered the tavern.
“How much have Milady got on her?” Grommet eyed her with lascivious intent.
“And why would she tell you that, you old scoundrel?” A youthful voice made Iola turn around to look behind her.
He was young and rather handsome, as well as better dressed than everyone else in that shabby establishment. His chiselled features and generous smile would serve well to charm a giddy young woman off her feet.
“Be gone, Klaus.” The bald mercenary snarled. “Lest Grommet show you...”
“The young lady hasn’t hired your services yet, old man.” Klaus slipped into the vacant seat beside Iola and smiled at her. “Six gold coins is the standard for the services you seek, my dear... and I will take only three, were you to grace me with your lovely company for a night or two.”
“I have no such desire, sir.” Iola grimaced at Klaus’ hand inching uncomfortably closer to hers on the wooden table.
“Ah, but you haven’t even sampled my services yet.” The young mercenary placed his large hand over her slender wrist.
“Please...” Iola struggled to free her hand, looking around the room in near panic. “I just need safe passage to Sidusca and back.”
