The air seemed stale, blanketing everything in a nauseating dampness, sullying hope and harbouring uncertainty and desperation.
The world that Marana had known was crumbling like rotting wood. Neva was lost. Aeroz had let loose its armada of battleships to fight against the threat of the raiders and had razed Neva in its wake.
Before she had set off from Aeroz, the Confederacies had agreed to hunt for Zov’ha; they had believed that she was the answer to defeating the unified raiders. Parpa Dourne! It had been his idea! Marana could hardly believe the consequences of his words! So much carnage… and for what? Her dissident views had forced her into self-exile. Could she have stopped this if she had not run away? She clenched her fists to rid herself of these ravenous thoughts that plagued her mind.

Something in Zov’ha’s conscience always made her skeptical of these eugenical traditions. She had spent sufficient time, both on- and off-duty trying to help the downtrodden. And in her egalitarian efforts, she had heard their whispers and their pleas. Most people adhered to the Council’s will out of fear — but the message from them was clear — selective breeding of humans was preposterous! This had caused a rift in her beliefs. She had thought about proposing alternative approaches to the Council’s forced unions and breeding rituals, but she knew her voice would remain unheard.
Now, the faction leaders themselves had come forward to demand change.

Excerpt: Minutes flowed like hours as Zov’ha and Aekis gazed at each other. She looked like a terrifying monstrosity. But Aekis noticed something that the others did not — a single tear flooded her left eye. Aekis felt like she was pleading with him to save her from whatever had consumed her. Even though I’m like this, he interpolated, tell me that you will still accept me. There was no way he was going to let her down, after all that had happened.
Regret, guilt, longing — things he had kept at bay all these years came flooding through him now. The false mourning he had been through had opened a gate. He had felt like he had abandoned Zov’ha in Asenya. He had come back, but she had not wanted him there. And in leaving, had once again abandoned her. Again and again. No, not anymore…

Zov’ha lay peacefully within the capsule, and Subeya, feeling a little saddened, allowed a few minutes to pass as she observed her friend. Zov’ha’s right eyelid seemed to appear darker in colour, as if it were bruised. Strange, Subeya thought. I didn’t notice that before.
Subeya found the lever with the red light easily enough. It was too small for her hand so she had to use three fingers. She gave it a good tug, which caused it to snap right out of the device.
‘Damn!’ she croaked, staring at the broken lever in her hand. ‘Looks like I’ll have to carry the capsule...'
