Kyra walked down the block. It was pretty creepy without anybody else around. She really wished that her friends hadn’t left her behind and that her boyfriend had come to the party like originally planned. The next party that her friends had left her for probably wasn’t even going to be that fun. Colton was throwing it and everybody knew what a drag he was. He usually made fun of her red hair anyway, teasing her about being a hothead. She couldn’t help it if her Irish ancestry gave her red hair, blue eyes, and a multitude of freckles? At least she wasn’t that short like most people thought those with Irish ancestry should be. 5’8 was taller than a lot of people.
She turned the corner and continued down the next street. What were the streetlights doing out? Wasn’t the city supposed to make sure that they stayed lit? There had been an article in the paper about rising crime rates recently and one of the main points was that crime was more likely to happen when it was dark. The city council had promised to keep up the maintenance on the lights.
While deep in her thoughts and definitely not paying attention to her surroundings, Kyra had turned down the wrong street (again) and was now in the alleyway behind an apartment building. She knew it was iffy to walk through but it would actually cut a few minutes off her walk time home. As she walked through, she heard a quiet sound. Stopping and listening to it, she realized it was a groan. A human groan even. She debated walking on and calling the police once out of the alleyway, but what if someone was seriously hurt and bleeding out or something? Looking around she realized that there wasn’t even very many places for someone to be. She figured she’d just take a quick look and if they weren’t in immediate danger she would call the police and wait for them. She decided to check behind the dumpster first, it wasn’t that big and would be easy to move. As she started to move it though, she heard the groan again. It sounded like it was coming from inside. She gingerly lifted the lid, no good. It was way too dark for her to see anything. After using her phone as a flash light, she opened the lid again and peeked it inside. Shrieking, she dropped her phone inside the dumpster and slammed the lid shut. She took a moment to process what she had seen.
She thought that she had seen a guy covered in blood with half his throat ripped out. She was pretty sure it was time to call the police. Great idea, except, she had dropped her phone in the dumpster like a derp and now had no way to call the police. Not only that, she had contaminated a crime scene. She had to find another phone, and quick. There was a lot of blood in the dumpster.
