I lean back against a brick wall, breathing heavily. A bag of bread was clutched in my sweaty fist, and I glanced around the alley. Footsteps ran up to the entry, and I flinch away from the light, as the newly-robbed stall owner ran to catch me. Dust kicked up at my heels as I stepped backwards, disturbing the untouched cobbles. The sounds of running faded and I took liberty to sigh in relief.
I slung the bag over my shoulder, and trudged further into the darkness. The buildings were dark and enclosing around me, small slit windows hung open loosely, and passing below one I felt the warmth of a fire, drifting into the alley, but it was all quiet. Too quiet. I spun, and saw a long line of darkness, but no-one was there.
"No." A heavily accented voice said, through the window. "We haven't gotten anymore."
I ducked low, pushing my back against the cold brick wall below the window. Another voice began talking, but in a different language, and I realised that he was speaking in Sanian. I couldn't understand most of what he was saying.
"Help... Spy... Intell... Academy..."
I paused. Help? Spy? Academy?
"We need more." He first man said. "More recruits, more supplies, and more people from over here."
I gasped, before clasping my hand over my mouth, dropping the bag. It sent plooms of dust up from the ground, and the men stopped talking.
A door I hadn't noticed opened next to me, and a tall man stepped out, a scrawier man next to him. The taller was wider build, and stronger looking, his expression darker and heavier, his brown eyes narrowed under thick eyebrows. His outfit was heavy and layered, his fore arms bare. The thinner one was wearing older and more worn clothes. He had a wild, worried look on his face. They looked so different, apart from a badge, with twisting loops and a dove dented into its metal.
The more threatening looking one leaned forwards, a rag in his hand, and clasped a ruff hand across my face. I tried to scream, but breathed in the drugs on the rag, loosing consciousness.
