The school hallway buzzed with activity as students wandered back and forth, their voices blending into a discordant mix of teenage conversation and laughter. Amidst this lively backdrop, one voice stood out like a fire alarm in a library, drawing curious glances.
“Yo, Kira!”
My body pivoted sharply as I stepped out of the boys’ restroom, spotting Taiga Watanabe at the far end of the corridor. His grin was as wide as a billboard, waving frantically enough to be mistaken for a landing signal.
My name is Akira Sakamoto, though most folks call me Kira. I’m a senior at Haruhiro High School in Fukuoka, Kyushu, and I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Since my junior high days, I’ve avoided in becoming a target for bullies and jerks—not because I’m strong, but because I have an innate ability to talk my way out of trouble, more or less.
“So, what’s eating your nuts this time, bro?” I quipped as Taiga approached and stood before me.
“Today’s the day, man. I’m asking Saki out,” he declared eagerly.
Hmm... Saki? Which one is she again? I scratched my head, pondering.
“You mean the snot-nosed girl you were telling me about last month?” I asked.
“Nah, not her.”
“Booger-faced girl you singled out during the school assembly yesterday?” I threw another guess.
“Not that one either, you jerk!”
I raised an eyebrow. Look at this guy. Who’s he calling a jerk?
“Then which girl?” I squinted at him.
“Saki Nishimura, from class 3-4!”
Ah, that Saki. I nodded in recognition, recalling her at last.
“Come on Kira, you gotta remember her,” Taiga insisted. “The one with the cute face and ponytail.”
I sighed, patting Taiga’s shoulder. “Taiga, Taiga, Taiga. As I’ve told you many times, I’m not into girls with flat runways.”
Quick disclaimer: I’m a peach enthusiast; the bigger they are, the more I appreciate them.
“You and your shallow taste,” Taiga muttered under his breath.
I chuckled. “Lighten up, dude.”
“Anyway, I’m off to see Saki,” Taiga said, his tone softening. “You heading out too?”
“Yep, you know me. Can’t stand loitering after school,” I replied with a nod.
“All right, catch you later, bro,” Taiga called over his shoulder before darting away. I laughed again, watching him scurry away.
Who cares about girls with chests that planes have no problem landing and taking off?
Turning to leave, I abruptly halted in my tracks—except for this girl. My eyes zeroing on an individual that mesmerized me with their infectious laughter, despite my earlier thoughts. This person stood out, their allure undeniable. Even if her assets were smoother than a freshly paved runway, I wouldn’t mind ogling at her all day long.
Three girls ambled down the hallway, their lively chatter echoing off the walls. The one that caught my eyes was my classmate, Rei Fujimoto, the epitome of beauty at Haruhiro High School.
Every time I saw her, Rei’s glossy, raven-black hair cascaded around her shoulders like a river of silk, catching the light in a way that could make even the most mundane moment feel like a scene from a movie. Her eyes, deep and mysterious, seemed to hold secrets of the universe, drawing me in with their warmth and depth. Although we rarely exchanged words, the way my heart raced whenever we crossed paths revealed everything.
Time seemed to slow as Rei and her friends glanced my way. She grinned and greeted me with a teasing nickname. “Hey there, Zipper-kun.”
“Um, hi... Rei-kun,” I stammered, feeling my cheeks flush. The girls giggled as they passed by, stealing glances back at me.
Is this year going to be my year?
I clenched my fist in excitement. Wait, why did she call me Zipper-kun? I scratched my head, puzzled. Never mind that, though. The important thing was that Rei had acknowledged me, and that was what mattered.
Shaking off the confusion, I turned around, only to collide with an unexpected obstacle. I didn’t recoil, though, because whatever my face had collided with was so soft and warm that it felt like a gentle embrace, leaving me momentarily disoriented but strangely comforted.
Is this heaven?
“Enjoying yourself there, Kira?”
I looked up to see the towering figure of Mai Oda, the tallest girl in school and captain of the girls’ basketball team. She’d been my arch-nemesis since kindergarten, and fate had cruelly linked our families together. Standing at a formidable six foot one, Mai took great pleasure in teasing me, probably well aware of my penchant for a particular physique. I may have inadvertently let slip my preference once, uttering the word “peaches” in a discussion about a lady’s... well, you get the idea.
“Ack!” I exclaimed, stepping back in surprise. “Not after I saw your face!” I retorted, trying to ignore the fact that her... um, twins were at eye level with me, given my modest height of five foot six. Her attitude canceled out any indulgence in my sensual pleasures.
Mai’s eyes narrowed, a hint of amusement playing in them despite her annoyance. Her long, dark hair flowed down her back, adding to her imposing presence. With a smirk, she leaned in slightly, exuding confidence and superiority.
“Caught you again, huh?” she said. “You never learn, do you?”
I rolled my eyes, feeling a mixture of frustration and begrudging admiration for her ability to catch me off guard every time. “Whatever, Mai. Can’t you bother someone else for once?”
She chuckled, a sound that only irritated me further. “Where’s the fun in that?” she teased. “And where are you off to in such a hurry?” Her tone took on an accusatory edge.
“Oi, whatever I do after school is my business,” I shot back, jabbing a finger in her direction.
Mai let out a sigh of exasperation. “You’re wasting your time going to that ‘place’ every day. Why not take up a sport? This is our final year in school, and you talked about becoming a keisatsukan, didn’t you? Sports will help you toughen up that fragile physique of yours.”
I squinted my eyes at her, silently disagreeing. I didn’t need great strength and stamina to join the police force. My dream of becoming a keisatsukan was to catch and frisk those deri jō in Nakasu’s red-light district. No way those ladies could outrun me with those... um, high heels.
“Here’s a thought. I’ll coach you in basketball. You know how good I am, right?” Mai continued, her tone almost pleading. “And I’ll ask Okuda-sensei to let you join the boys’ basketball team. I’m sure he’ll agree.”
Of course, that sleazy old bastard would listen to her because of her... assets. But I kept my thoughts to myself, replying sarcastically instead. “Really? You think I’m itching to bounce a peach around with you?” Oops. That came out wrong. I was supposed to say basketball.
Before I could correct myself, a hand swung toward my face.
Luckily, my ninja reflexes kicked in, and I dodged the blow. “Hey, no swinging in the hallways, Mai! We’ve been over this!” I exclaimed, letting out a relieved breath.
“And what about burying your face in my peaches?” Mai retorted.
“Well, that wasn’t on purpose,” I replied, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks. “And stop saying ‘peaches’! It’s not cool when girls say it.”
Mai shook her head wearily. “Fine, fine. Go do your thing.” She gestured toward my trousers. “By the way, Kira, your fly’s open.”
My eyes widened in horror as I glanced down.
Darn it! I forgot to zip up after leaving the restroom!
Fumbling with the zipper, I hastily jerked it up, but a sudden, sharp pain shot through me like lightning. “Ouch!” I yelped, the sound reverberating through the hallway as I doubled over, clutching my crotch in agony.
