I thought I would include an index for a bit of background info before the actual story starts ;)
Places mentioned in book one:
Roma- The continent in which the story takes place.
Witch Marshes- These are the small cities that witches have created to hide away from the rest of the world. Usually named after a color (Asajj's marsh is the Second Cerulean Marsh). They consist of about 50-300 witches and are headed by a witch council (3 members) and all marshes are lead by the High Witch.
Nautimere- A port city in the southern most peninsila of Roma.
Paristol- The capital city of Roma (also called the capitol).
Uran- The land to the north of Roma. This is the home of the Griphs (also called the land of jade sand).
Lebo- Aneighboring kingdom that houses only humans. In the kingdom, all creatures that aren't human have been banned.
Saint Cressaloma - A large city just south of Uran. It is its own territory and all species are welcome, witches included.
Author's note: I will update the Index as I go; it will definetly evolve with the story.
Species mentioned in book one:
Witches- Women given a second chance at life after dying at the greedy hand of a warlock. They typically live much longer than humans (average life span is 300 years during which they physically age very slowly) and they wield magic. Witches can be any species, but warlocks usually only attack human women becuase of their "lack of physical stength" and abundace of untapped energy that can be turned into dark magic.
Warlocks- Creatures who have devoted themselves so fully to dark magic, that they can no longer live without feeding on it. Just like witches, warlocks can be any species, but elven warlocks and human warlocks are most common. If they are not killed and they are fed dark magic regularly, warlocks will live forever.
Elves- Humanoid beings with large builds (usually around 7' and 220 lb) and colorful hair. They have an affinity with whatever domain they are from (Elves from Nautimere have an affinity to water, meaning they can predict storms, communitcate with water dwelling creatures, etc.) Elves are born without a gender, but they are free to choose if they want. Their physical apperence can be changed if they so please to become that gender of their choosing. Children among Elves are very rare and they can only breed outside of their species with Fay. Because Fay were seen as inferior for so long, Elves did not breed outside of their species.
Fay- Humanoid beings with colorful eyes. The vibrant color of their eyes is a dead give away to what tribe their ancestors were from. Fay were once considered inferior to other species becuase of their gentle nature and their polytheistic beliefs. Fay are now accepted and valued within most cities and kigdoms. They are physically weaker than most humans, but they are nimble and graceful, with lilthe builds. They can range in size, just like humans and they live a lot longer than most species unless killed (on average, 500-600 years).
Humans- Although powerless, humans have been granted favor by the gods. They have been blessed with an abundance of their population and they are typically the ones to establish cities and towns, welcoming most other species. Humans can only breed with Fay and Syli'ti out side of their species.
Griphs- Beasts with silver coats and four eyes. They are creatures that the gods create in the heavens before sending them down to the mortal realm to serve as protectors to beings blessed by the gods. They are solitary creatures, mostly becuase of their shy nature, but also because most other species avoid them; they are about as big as a large horse and they are deadly when provoked. Griphs are all borne male, but some choose to change their gender. Griphs cannot reproduce. At all.
Orcs- Blood thirsty brutes who actually do eat children. They are the product of some random warlock's experiment gone wrong (not exactly important to the series). They stand at about 13 feet and usually weight over 500 pounds. they lay up to sixteen eggs during their lifetimes and they fall into two genders: Nok and Sol. Both can lay eggs, but Nok are considered the guardians of the eggs, killing anything that comes near them, including other Orcs.
Gnomes- Creatures that are literally made of earth. They are cultivated like seeds and tended to by their parents before they pop out of the ground. They stand at about 3' 7" and have a squate build. They consume sunlight like a plant would and nectar (kinda like honey). They cannot breed outside of their species.
Syli'ti- Rare, human like creatures that are very graceful and typically very strong. They are all either born as males or without a gender. There are no existing female Syli'ti. They have two sets of arms, the second set coming out of the space beneath their first set of shoulder blades. Syli'ti can reproduce with any species, but 96% of the time, the offspring will be not be a Syli'ti. No "half-blood" can be born.
Author's note: Other species will be added to the index as the story evolves (That's code for: "I'm making stuff up as I go" T-T)
Religions:
Most creatures in Roma (and throughout the mortal realm) are polytheistic, believing in many gods who reside in the heaven realm. However, some creatures wroship different dieties.
Orcs do have a religion (albeit bloody and very not legal). They worship dark magic (aka black magic), just like warlocks.
Elves worship their All-Mother, the first elf, as well as the gods.
Fay worship the old gods, a collection of gods from Ole Fay lore, that mixed with the mortals of the land, having a few children before going back to their home beyond the heaven realm. This is the belief that led Fay to be viewed a inferior, as other species did not agree with their religious views.
Most witches do not consider consider themselves religious, but some are.
Beyond the safety of their hidden marshes, witches are seen as monsters of lore; Children eating creatures who never die. Women that are cursed in their previous lives, and are never able to live without the kiss of cursed magic.
But Asajj, like every other witch, would never want to eat a child. Ew.
Within their marshes, witches thrive and study the very magic that makes their world turn, creating safe havens that have been evolving since the first god walked alongside mortals.
Asajj has the gifts of her Fay ancestors within her, but that ancestry is what sets her apart from her peers in the Second Cerulean Marsh. With blood that has been deemed dirty and magic that remains stained, Asajj wanders beyond the marsh, swept headlong into a prophecy in the works that should have had nothing to do with her.
