The house was silent and dark but far from still. There was movement downstairs from the basement to the kitchen area, a lone figure swept across the floor, only a trail of water left from where her dress brushed the ground. She made not a sound, not even a whisper, even as she moved into the living room where it's old wooden floors always creak when the slightest pressure was on it. The figure stood there, dressed all in white and soaking wet from head to toe. Her short hair was a pale blonde and her skin so white it seemed to glow in the moonlight. There was no one there with her, except for Piper. They stood across from one another, Piper in the shadows of the stairs and the girl standing still in the moonlight by the window.
"Hello. Who are you?" Piper asked.
The figure, head turned toward the window, whispered something Piper could not hear. She felt herself shiver. Some part of her wanted to get up and leave but another part of her told her to stay and listen. She decided to try and speak to the girl again. One, two, three, four steps and she was beside the girl. She reached out a hand to touch her shoulder but the girl flinched and moved away.
"Are you alright?" She asked. Who is this girl? She wasn't one of the new girls at the Sorority, Piper thought. If she were new, Piper would know her because she'd be a newbie like her. Maybe an older girl, Piper guessed, she didn't know everyone yet and Theta Kai was the biggest sorority on campus.
The girl lifted her head but Piper still could not see her face, In a loud, clear voice she said, "You need to turn the stove off."
Piper blinked. "Um...what--"
"Turn it off before everyone burns."
That's when Piper smelled it, the scent of rotten eggs and garlic. It was coming from the kitchen. Piper moved in a daze as she opened the kitchen door. The smell was so pungent she thought she might throw up. She heard something hiss then pop and one by one, from left to right, the four stove burners alighted. The orange-red flames seemed to be dancing. She heard a pop and was pushed out the kitchen door, landing on her back as a red-hot whoosh of air enveloped her. She didn't feel any pain but she knew she was on fire. So was the whole house and everywhere she looked she saw the fire and heard screams of anguish as her sorority sisters were swallowed by fire.
She heard someone laughing like all this suffering was some kind of big joke. She and every person in this home would be burned alive and someone thought that was funny...
Piper woke up with a gasp. She was in her bed, safe and warm, her roommate Rochelle asleep right next to her. She heard movement outside her door and throwing off the covers she threw open the door.
No one was there.
She heard Rochelle mumbling something but Piper didn't care if she woke her roommate up or not. Well, actually she did care, a lot, because she liked Rochelle and she didn't want to scare her or anything but Piper just had to be sure. Racing down the stairs, she guessed she must have been making a lot of noise because she heard someone shout something above her, Piper stopped in the living room. She sniffed the air. Nothing. No scent of rotten eggs and garlic. But she had to be sure, without a doubt and forced her way in the kitchen.
It was empty.
Empty, quiet, and the sweet scent of vanilla. Checking the gas light stove, she felt the top. Ice cold. The burners were off and nothing looked or sounded amiss. Piper let out a breath she'd been holding and sank into the kitchen chair. It was just a nightmare, she thought. All just a very bad nightmare.
"Piper, are you down here?"
Piper's sorority sister, as well as her older sister, Jenny, asked from the doorway.
"I'm...in the kitchen." She replied. More footsteps, more girls. Oh gosh, she thought, I just woke up the whole sorority, haven't I?
It wasn't the whole sorority, but their House Mother Mrs. Perez and her Big Sister, Betty Garcia, their house president came in, Jenny just behind them. Mrs. Perez looked as Prim and proper as she always did while Betsy, turning on the lights, just looked tired and angry. Jenny, always concerned for her, kneeled down to take her hands in hers. "Pip, what happened?"
"I...I...I smelled rotten eggs and garlic." She stuttered.
Betsy, blonde hair in a loose braid, yawned. "What?"
"The gas. I smelled gas!" She clarified. Taken aback, Mrs. Perez went to the stove to check it but just like Piper saw that there was nothing wrong with it. Jenny stood up to wrap a comforting arm around her sister. Betsy sighed, rubbing her tired eyes.
"Piper, could you just explain, from the beginning, what happened?"
Piper told them a very abridged version of her dream, never mentioning the fire or the screams though Jenny suspected that she was withholding information but didn't press. Betsy, after hearing her out came around and wrapped a comforting arm around her as well.
"Listen, Piper, it was just a really bad nightmare. We've all had them. I can understand why you'd freak out." Betsy said.
"You might just be stressed from school," Jenny suggested. "Freshman year can be the hardest."
Piper looked back from Jenny to Betsy. "I..I..know, it's just...I was afraid that something bad was going to happen,"
"It was admirable of you to try and stop any potential disaster and protect your sisters." Mrs. Perez said, "But I expect you to come to either Betsy or myself if you do believe that there might be something serious. Alright, Piper?"
Piper nodded her head. They went back to bed, though Piper's sleep was fitful. She didn't dream when she was asleep but when she was awake, her mind kept thinking back to the nightmare she'd had. The bitter smell of rotten eggs, the whoosh of the fire and the screams from her sorority sisters as they were eaten by the fire. She was afraid. Because this nightmare was a lot like the other ones she'd had since coming here. They all came true, in a way.
What would she do if this one came true?
Outside her door, a figure dressed in white roamed the hallway, watching as every girl slept, unaware of her presence. She watched and she waited, biding her time until the next disaster attacked Theta Kappa Rho
