The horse drawn carriage jostled and shook its passenger as it wove up the old twisting pathway out of a little town at the base of the mountains. Suzanne Koval held her bag in a death grip, attempting to keep it from crashing out the paper thin window. Despite the thick layers in the skirt of her dress her legs were thrashed with pain every time she was thrown into the sides of the bench. Between winces she glanced out the window, marveling at how much smaller the town was already. She sighed, it would be at least half a year before she would be able to return again. People rarely visited the asylum and with the full two day’s travel both ways by horse it was better to restrict going into town.
The carriage lurched to a stop, waking Suzanne from her weak sleep by throwing her onto the floor. She grumbled to herself as she rubbed her head. Had it been two days already? All she could remember was constant pain shooting through her legs and exhausted hazy dreams.
“Get ou’” The driver said gruffly, swinging the door open.
“What? We’re no where near the asylum!” She protested, casting a hand towards the looming building in the distance. “It’s at least six hundred meters away!”
“Eight. Ain’t no way Oi’m goin’ up to that damned building. Them is wild as a hog in rut.” He said, waving a hand at her as he went back to his horse.
“They are not wild! They are very sick and need care!” She exclaimed, fed up with his attitude.
He laughed and muttered something nasty as he climbed up to the driver’s seat.
“Ever heard of using an automobile!?” She yelled at him.
He only laughed louder and Suzanne huffed at him before stomping away, it was going to be a long day.
