In my hands I hold a ticket that will show me the world. I'm so excited I can finally leave my small town. I've never really been one to venture out of my comfort zone. My name is Soledad. I prefer to go by Sole . Whenever I got my allowance I would try to save as much as I could. Once I was able to work, I would work until I dropped. I'm not even sure what I was saving for because my grades were high enough to get me a full ride at a good college. Now I know what I've been saving for. Before I start college, I want to see the world, meet new people, taste new foods, and experience other cultures. I want to be a well rounded person.
I board the plane with others who also wish to experience the world. I was nervous, worried about my lack of social skills. I only spoke when spoken to, kind of like an npc in a video game. A large portion of the group were talking about soccer. I understood soccer, but I didn't follow any particular team, so I was unable to join the conversation. I was ready to put on my headphones, but I was tapped on the shoulder.
"¿Tú hablas español?" The voice came from a Spanish woman with fair skin and green eyes.. She was stunning. I was so glad I had been practicing my spanish. I translated the sentence in my head. She had asked if I knew spanish.
"Un poquito." I managed to say. She smiled and locked eyes with me. "¿Tú hablas Ingles?" I then asked. I wasn’t sure if she knew english but I figured asking couldn’t hurt.
"A little." she replied with a thick accent. I felt my cheeks flush, she sounded so cute. She looked down and seemed to be in deep thought about something. She snapped out of it and flashed me a smile before pointing to herself. "Want to… get better… at English…" she said as she then pointed at me. " Want to… get better… at Spanish?" she asked and smiled.
"¡Si!" I said and smiled back. I always wanted to learn spanish. As a bonus, I would have a friend to enjoy the trip with.
