She nearly tripped over her own feet as she climbed the grand marble staircase of the mansion, trying to keep up with miss Maya. Her heart was in her throat and she didn't dare to speak. She doubted she was even able to speak. It was eerily quiet. The house and its gardens usually bustled with life. She worked in the tech center that was situated in the left wing, so she knew how the mansion usually felt.
How the mansion was now, clad in silence, was not how this pack home should be. There should be changelings walking around, both wolf and human. There should be pups racing each other to the library or the nursery. There should be warning sounds to the pups to not run into walls or against a pristine statue that everyone cursed at, but no one ever got rid of.
She reached the top of the stairs. This was private property of the alpha king and his betas. No one was allowed here. Unless you were invited. And she had been invited over, a lot. But she never took the marble staircase. She knew the secret passages: wooden staircases where every other step creaked and made you feel as if you were on an adventure. Which she usually was when she was on those staircases. Bonus point of those staircases was that her wolf didn't slip on the steps, contrary to the marble steps.
To the right was where the alpha king's quarters were, but they turned a left. "Why am - "
"You do not talk unless you are addressed, miss Enora."
Enora closed her mouth, as if she was a misbehaving dog who was reprimanded, instead of a mature wolf who had earned the respect of her pack and of the alpha king. Miss Maya stopped in front of a door and when the woman looked at Enora, her eyes betrayed that she actually thought of Enora as a wild wolf. Or at least a misplaced thing. She opened the door.
"You will be staying here. Go on, go on in."
Enora hesitated and then stepped inside. The windows were open, a small early autumn breeze made the curtains move.
"Your suitcase will be delivered later. You have an hour to get ready. I want to see you in the ballroom at 1 PM. Not a minute later." Maya was already closing the door.
"Wait, I have -" The door shut in her face. "questions." She finished defeated. She stayed as if frozen for a few seconds. Her phone had been confiscated, her luggage was surely searched right now and all she could think about was Jesse.
