"We have no clue to what is causing you these episodes of temporary paralysis to your legs, but from our estimated guesses it's probably a permanent side effect of the accident you were involved in a couple years back."
Ah,yes an accident that almost killed me.Yes,hi my name is Dakota Anderson and yes this doctor does not have the answers I was looking for. Why are my legs failing me?
I thought seeking medical attention would help me figure out why I'm experiencing this sudden paralysis that goes through my legs. But they don't have a clue, only that it could be due to the car crash a couple years ago.
"So your saying that this is a side effect, causing me to go paralyzed for anywhere from a couple minutes to at least an hour, is due to the car accident."
"Well yes, if you look at your past exams and X-rays you can see that you received some nerve damage as well as fractures in your spinal cords." The doc says pointing to who knows what on my old X-ray of my spine.Like seriously what am I supposed to be looking at.
"You're lucky that you were not paralyzed in this accident."
Yes, I'm lucky. Im lucky to still be able to walk, well sort of.I mean yeah the recovery was painful, physical therapy was a literal pain in the ass since I had to re-learn how to walk again. I was stuck in a hospital room for almost over two months. But I still had to come back for check ups and had to still go through therapy, which is kind of ok I guess.
"Ok, so what am I supposed to do now,I have a job, I can't go to constantly worry about falling down and not being able to stand for who knows how long." I own my own little library with a little cafe added in there too.
"Well, I could suggest using a wheelchair."
"No, not a wheelchair, definitely not that, I wanna walk and not depend on something like that."
I don't want a wheelchair and be bound to that thing when I'm out and about. It's embarrassing to me. I'm sorry but it's true, being in one is the least thing that I want to choose as an alternative. It just shows that im different from everyone. I was gonna ask for another option but the doc beat me to it.
"Or you can get a service dog.It would be able to detect a difference in your scent and warn you when you're gonna experience paralysis. But for that It would need to be trained and by that I mean I would need you to go to the facility where training is at in order for the animal to know what it's looking for in your scent.Ok."
I guess that's better than a wheelchair. I nod my head at the doc preferring that option over the other. He then proceeds to make an appointment and sends me off with papers for my next appointment. But before I could leave he stopped me.
" I would prefer for you to use a wheelchair to get to your car right now. If I recall, you mention you had an episode before coming to the hospital."He looked me in the eyes and pointed to the doorway entrance and there was a nurse ready with a wheelchair for me to use.
"She will see you out to your car, only that ,and that is all ok? Now go on take a seat and I'll see you for our next appointment."
I looked him dead in the face and gave him an annoyed look, but I sat down anyway and couldn't ignore the doctor. If he knows what's best for me right now anyway. And like that I was whisked away to the chilly winter breeze outside.Did I mention it was winter.
