This tale is based on Greek Mythology and talks about the relationship between Hades and Persephone. Nonetheless, it has no commitment to reality or the original myth.
For every person who wants to experience passionate love.
Two thousand years ago
The cold wind blew the icy snowflakes against her body, making her hair flutter. Covered in white dots, her face flushed, burned by the cold and her eyes sparkling in the middle of the darkness. The winter was something Persephone had never faced, but she was not going to give up easily, she needed to save her beloved and there was only one way, she had to fulfill the mission assigned to her!
Since she had met Hades, her life had been turned upside down. She had met love and started to be treated with respect, but she had also lost touch with her mother. However, after an agreement, she was able to spend half a year with her husband living as the Queen of the Underworld. In this period, the land was ravaged by cold, bringing autumn and then winter, while in the other half, she lived with her mother bringing spring and then summer, so she had never witnessed a blizzard. Yet, now she needed to pass through the icy lands in order to prevent something terrible from happening.
On her last day beside her mother, Demeter, a great Autumnal Equinox feast was settled for her farewell. Every year there was a great party for the Gods to bid farewell to the Goddess of Spring, the Goddess of agriculture would present a plentiful table and Dionysus would always carry many barrels of wine. So before the sun rose, Persephone would return to the Underworld. However, the festivities were not so lively, the number of Gods worshipers had decreased, causing an uproar in the Olympus, as some small Gods had already lost all their powers and became mere mortals, a rumor spread that someone had died and some Demigods had fled with some relics to try to increase their longevity.
But the greatest rumor of all came from Helios, talking about how Zeus was weak and willing to do everything to not lose his rank, even murder Hades to achieve his immortality, after all, the only God who had not stopped receiving his offerings was he who received souls and more souls every day.
Initially, no one paid that much attention, but the more they drank, the more the rumor seemed to make sense and on that dawn Persephone returned home terrified. She could not let anyone hurt her husband, not even her father. So, after a passionate reunion with Hades to appease their longing for each other, she left again, while her beloved slept. She needed to confirm the story that Zeus was up to something and, if it was true, she needed to do something about it.
Her investigation paid off quickly, whereas she sneaked around Olympus, she overheard Hera talking to Athena about how Hades was Zeus' only chance and that they needed to act quickly while he was distracted by his Queen's return. Determined to prevent her father from doing anything against her husband, Persephone returned to the Underworld before Hades woke up, the Goddess of Spring had to solve it herself. This way she would prevent the conflict between the God of the Underworld and the Supreme God of Olympus from further escalating.
So, every night, she would do the same thing: sneak out, investigate Zeus' attack and eventually return before dawn.
It was tiring to spend her days in the Underworld ruling together with her husband and sleeping almost nothing to be able to investigate at night, which caused Persephone to often wonder if she was doing the right thing, or if maybe she should tell him everything or ask for help from someone, as it was hard to do everything alone. However, she knew that it would be even more difficult to face a world in which the Gods lived at war, or worse, in a world without Hades.
As usual, the period she spent with her beloved was magical. He had that tough and cruel appearance and he used to be rude and even violent with others, but no one would have imagined how dedicated he was to his wife, the way he looked at her seemed that she was the most precious thing in the whole universe, the way he cared for and pampered his Queen was simply charming and that was not all, the great and powerful Hades respected her and treated her as an equal, in the underworld Persephone's ideas and thoughts had value, the title of Queen was not just for show, she actually made important decisions together with her husband and for her that was incredible.
A month had passed until Persephone finally figured out what she needed to do, and another month to be able to plan everything. A Nordic God was in search of a powerful weapon, so much so, that he would do anything to get it, and nothing was more powerful than the lightning bolt of Zeus! She was obstinate to steal it from Zeus during the Winter Solstice feast and then go to the icy lands to hand over the weapon, seeking protection of the Norse God. Which would give her another month to enjoy with Hades before leaving on her mission.
They were the most pleasant days they had, they lived their love intensely, with long walks through the Elysium, playing with Cerberus at the gates of the underworld, talking about trivial things, sometimes just quietly enjoying each other's company and eating delicious meals, where Persephone spent hours telling about the beauties of nature and her adventures while she was away, while Hades looked at her intently absorbing every word and then, when night came, they had burning moments of love. Persephone spent more time than usual beside her husband, as she did not know when she would see him again after leaving.
When the Goddess of spring left for the Olympus, she knew that in six months she would be back, however, this time, she would leave in the middle of winter to an unknown land and did not know how long it would take or if she would succeed, but she had to try!
On her last day in the underworld, Persephone picked a beautiful bouquet of narcissus in the Elysium and placed them on the dresser next to the bed in her room, despite Hades ' complaints claiming that the flowers would not survive in the Underworld, she had nevertheless enchanted the flowers and as long as her heart beat the flowers would be alive. He grumbled, but when she said that the narcissus were important, as they reminded her of the day they met, since she was picking these flowers that day, Hades agreed to leave them in the room.
If Persephone knew that would be the last night she would spend with her husband she would not change anything at all, she lived a happy life next to him, because it was thanks to her beloved that the Goddess of spring could have her independence, she was treated with respect as truly equals, she was no longer treated as a fragile and innocent child, she knew love and could make her own choices and her choice would always be Hades.
After Hades fell into a deep sleep, she kissed his forehead and left the underworld forever. As expected, the party on Olympus was always full of drinks and it was not long before all the gods were drunk and talking bullshit. So, taking advantage of this moment of distraction, Persephone took the thunderbolt from Zeus and fled.
Persephone knew that the robbery would soon be noticed, but no one would suspect her, because she never left the underworld during the winter. Hades never forbade her to leave and return when she wanted, but she had respected the agreement she had made with her husband and her mother, and always spent 6 months on Olympus and 6 months in the underworld. That year was the first time she had left several times, however, there was a good reason for this, she needed to protect Hades just as he always did with her.
The journey to the Nordic lands took longer than expected, the cold winter was as unknown as the path, but Persephone was able to find the addressee, the one who was to be the new owner of the Lightning of Zeus, the great god Loki.
It didn't even occur to her how odd was the fact that their meeting was in a dark and icy cave, without even a bonfire, after all, Loki was a God, and gods had many peculiar traits. Meeting in a distant and isolated place to make a transition from something so valuable was understandable.
"Here it is," Persephone said, showing the package in her hands. Wrapped in a green silk cloth was Zeus' lightning bolt.
"Very well!" said Loki with his black eyes shining in the dark cave, it was not possible to see much of his silhouette, but the dim light from the Lightning showed his short black hair and his equally black long beard. "What will you want in exchange?"
"I want you to protect my husband! I need you to protect Hades!" Persephone said desperately.
"Will you give me the thunderbolt of the great and powerful Zeus if I protect your husband?" asked Loki, covering his mouth with his fingers and hiding his mischievous smile.
"Yes! Please keep him safe," she said, her green eyes staring at the man in front of her crying for help.
"Then I'll do as you ask," said Loki cheerfully.
Persephone handed the weapon into Loki's hands with a sigh and a smile of gratitude, her heart that had been heavy for so long was finally relieved.
Loki's laughter echoed through the cave, black eyes began to reflect a madness that was not there before, as he wielded the Lightning that shone brightly.
"Despina and Arion sent their regards," Loki said, releasing a bolt of lightning that struck Persephone in the chest.
The smell of burned flesh along with the metallic scent of blood filled the room, Loki's mad laugh was all Persephone could feel and hear, but she didn't think about the pain in her body or her breathing that was getting harder and harder, her thoughts were directed at only one place: Hades.
"Please protect Hades," were her last words before she closed her eyes and the narcissus withered.
