It was a long bus ride in the hot summer sun. This bus was broken down into different compartments. My friends and I sat in one in the compartment in the middle. My friends were Casey Matthews, Robyn Lee, and Jaxson Ann.
I met Casey and Robyn when I was seven. People wouldn't talk to me when I was younger. Mainly because I dress in more masculine, was born intersex, and couldn't speak English. I grew up speaking Spanish. My mother would try to teach, but I wouldn't pick it up. Casey took an interest in me. They sat next to me and would talk to me. Casey didn't know English either, but they didn't know Spanish. They mostly spoke in French.
We first met in a group assignment at the beginning of the second grade. Robyn was in our group. She spoke in English. So, we all didn't know what the others were saying. Our teacher gave us all an earpiece that would translate what the others said after they talked.
We would take notes in a notebook each time we talked. I would translate from Spanish to English to French. We wrote down the spelling of the words. Casey manage to learn English but didn't learn much Spanish. Robyn lost her notebook and slowly forgot Spanish and French. I was the only one that understood all three languages. Jaxson was my next-door neighbor, so he would talk to me when we were sitting in the backyard of our houses.
Now, Casey and I are 15 years old, Robyn is 16 years old, and Jaxson was only 14 years old. Casey and Robyn sat across from me. Jax sat next to me, mumbling words low enough for me not to hear. We sat mostly in silence, well until our compartment door had opened.
