Alek Murphy starts his day by getting out of bed. Or rather, getting out of the air. As he has begun to make it a habit to sleep-float. He does not see this habit as a bad one, however. He thinks this because he doesn't fly around and get hurt on anything. He just kind of stays in one place over the bed with the covers draped over himself. The only reason he even bothers to recognize this anomaly is that every time his alarm clock goes off to start the day, he falls out of the air and crashes onto the bed, ultimately waking up his new roommate - Chris Sung. And he does not like being woken up. Especially on the weekends.
Quickly, Alek scrambles to the floor as he hears the stomping of Chris’s enraged footsteps. You see, Alek hasn't had the courage yet to tell his roommate he is a vampire. Even though everyone else he has met knows - he just doesn't feel comfortable telling him just yet. He sees Chris as an extremely intimidating figure. Sometimes he compares him to his own father, whom is long dead now. Yet he does not want to move out just yet. He has only been here just under a year, and it would be pointless to move just because someone's intimidating.
“Alek! What the hell, dude! This has been what - at least two weeks in a row you have fallen off of your bed?” Alek can feel his face getting hotter at the tone of Chris’ voice.
“It’s not like I can control it!” He snaps. A few heated moments pass before cooling to a light simmer. Remorse wafts over Chris’s features, and he turns to go back to bed. Alek takes a deep breath as if someone let the air back into the room. He sits back on his bed to recollect himself. Every morning this seems to happen in the same order. He wonders if Chris will ever get truly angry with him and hurt him. Although He just doesn't seem the type to get angry at all - and these mornings were just a bad trigger for him. Alek sighs and goes to get ready for the day.
Although it seems out of character, Alek finds pleasure in being awake during the day. He is quite the social butterfly, but does not have people who he sticks around long enough to build better relationships past ‘acquaintance’ and ‘study partner’.
The days have just begun getting longer and the morning dew sticks to every surface. Alek revels in the early hours of the morning. At this time, he would enjoy the mixed smells of drowsy blood (his favorite) as well as human breakfast foods. Although taking one bite makes him ill, he loves the smell of bacon and coffee the best. Also, without the harsh sun hitting him, he would not be in a full fit of twitching. As that is what the sun does to him other than burning him easily.
He hovers seven inches off of the ground as he passes by his roomie's bedroom. Being deathly quiet in doing so, although the same cannot be said for Chris. He was snoring to his heart's content. He checks out of the window and takes a few moments surveying the sky as he usually would. Alek frowns. Today was going to be a wet day, masking the sounds and smells he loves so much. He dawns his favorite mauve beanie and grabs the essentials off of the coffee table: sunglasses, his tattered wallet, and his old umbrella he has had for maybe ten years. Trusty umbrella. He picks up his converse and puts them on while hovering to avoid stumbling.
He leaves the apartment floating until he gets to the last step of the lower levels. The clock by the exit reads five sixteen. It is a little later than usual because of the small argument earlier that morning with Chris.
“Oh! Hello Christine! I did not expect you to be awake this early.” Alek says to the middle-aged woman who passes in front of him, clearly in a rush. She whips her head back to him aggressively and she checks her watch, clearly debating whether she has time to complain or bicker with Alek or not. She snaps her dagger-like eyes back to his own ruddy brown ones.
“Listen, you little piece of shit. I am nowhere near your age so could you stop flirting with me every fucking morning?”
Alek stares back at her in disbelief. Each morning he would say something kind to her because she constantly looked stressed and at a loss for sleep, he had never thought of it as being an advancing move. He takes a step towards her, eye to eye.
“I don't know what made you think that, but I would never like someone as ignorant and work crazed as yourself,” Alek whispers. She grunts and whips back around in disgust, leaving the building just as it has started to rain. Today was just not starting right.
He briskly walks out a few minutes after Christine, avoiding her thinking Alek was a stalker and getting a restraining order. Shortly after standing in the rain, he makes up his mind to go to the nearby cafe, where it was dry inside. Although he would normally sit in the town square to get the full range of scents and sounds from all of the early morning shops. He was just not in the mood for being wet.
He steps into the cafe where he is greeted by the chime of the doorbell and a tall woman greeting him kindly. Alek has been here at most three times a week since he moved here. Mostly on the weekends because he was working a summer job to work into his boring schedule. He floats as he closes his umbrella, setting it by the door.
“How’s it going, Alek? Back to work or just smellin’ around again?” She asks him, making him sit at the diner-style breakfast table.
“I guess I'm just smelling around, Carrie.” He sighs, “It's not been the best of mornings and I'm not up for any work at the moment.” He looks down at his hands, half wishing her away. She turns on her heel and goes behind the long bar, bending down to grab something from beneath.
“Smells are coming right up! And you’re just in time. I was just about to have my breakfast.” She says, setting a small jar of coffee beans in front of Alek. he opens it and takes a good whiff as Carrie goes into the back to make her breakfast herself, switching a quiet male to greeting duty. Carrie is the woman who runs the cafe. She is a good, upbeat person who likes to get to know everyone on a personal level and reacts to others’ emotions well. She has known that Alek was a vampire since his first visit to the cafe. In which she had noticed his tendency to fly as well as his fangs. She has been his friend since then.
The doorbell chimes and a pair of heavy boots fall into the room. Alek glances back to where a delicious smell is emanating from. It is a tall, homeless man that frequents the cafe to escape the elements. Carrie lets him even sleep in here sometimes - or so she tells him. He walks up and carefully hops up onto a breakfast table stool perpendicular to Alek. Alek has made it quite clear to Carrie that he enjoys drowsy blood the best, trying to hint to her that this man should not be in close proximity to him in case Alek slips up and ends up drinking the old man's blood.
The old man does not take a liking to Alek either, because he is extremely religious and thinks that vampires are demons sent from hell to influence others to sin. He pulls up his old grey backpack onto the table and rests his head on it. The smell gets stronger and stronger until Alek has to physically punch his nose shut. Then, as soon as it had assaulted his nose, it is gone. The homeless man was asleep. Another smell fills the air now. The pleasant smell of bacon and eggs wafted to him and a smile plays on his face. His emotions fading away.
Alek does not need to feed often, about twice a week. And even then he has to have a willing and sober donor. Carrie is the most frequent donor he has ever had in his 67 years of being a vampire. She offers every time she sees him. Even if it is just on the street or in the local mall. He would just keep her as his only donor if it weren't for his want for different tastes.
“So, what's bugging you this fine morning?” Carrie says from across the bar, shoving a bacon piece into her mouth. Alek is called back to reality and sits back onto the stool.
‘I really need to learn to stop hovering like this’ He thinks to himself. “Oh, well, my roommate yelled at me this morning for waking him up. Then, It started raining. And I bumped into this woman who apparently can’t take a compliment.” Alek sits back and lets his eyes drift over the plate of food. He looks up at the man who caused him hunger pangs. Carrie looks over to him, then back at Alek with an apologetic sigh.
“You know, you could have just told me he was here and I would have him leave while you were here-”
“No, no. I'm alright. The coffee beans distracted me a lot and I'm not hungry at all” He lies. Carrie eats pensively. The digital clock sitting on the far left of the bar reads 5:55. “Hey, Carrie?” He asks her. She looks up from her nearly emptied plate. “How old are you?” She looks like she had just been punched in the face. Her features distorting.
“I’m fifty-three. Why?” She leans towards the boy. He averts his gaze to look out the window at the brightening sky.
“I don't know. It’s just that I guess I'm starting to feel lonely.” He presses his cheek to the table. The woman gazes at him in wonder. He had outlived most of his relatives and friends. How was she supposed to cheer him up from something she had nearly no experience in? Then, an idea strikes her. So obvious that she was mad at herself for not thinking of it earlier.
“Get a girlfriend!”
Alek shoots his head up to give her a disapproving and almost feral glare. This took Carrie for a loop.
“I don't want a relationship like that. And I'm pretty sure I'll end up killing the person if I get that close.” Again. He lays his head back down on the cool marble top. She follows his gaze to the dreary sky.
“If that is such a big deal to you - about your control I mean - why do you bother going outside at all? Why do you have a roommate?” She says with a sharp tongue. “Why not just hole up in a friggin dungeon by yourself? Maybe then you will get the solitude you want.” Alek closes his eyes in shame from her scrutiny. That was not what he wanted at all. He loved social interaction, just not in the form of the physical and romantic sense. But he bit his tongue.
“Fine then, mister grumpy pants. Stay quiet and lonely for the rest of your immortal life.” She stomps into the back as a few customers walk in. Alek sighs. Well, if he can’t find any advice here, there was always the basketball court. He shook his head at the thought. It was still pouring, and who would be out to play with him at six in the morning? But that may be just what he needs - silence.
He hovers off his chair and goes to the door to grab his umbrella, not even bothering to say goodbye. A few people stare at him as he hovers out. He only has been in this town for a few months, and he did not figure that everyone knew his secret just yet. He was still not in the mood for explaining. He just leaves right away.
By the time Alek had arrived at the park, it was already seven o’clock. It would have taken him a lot less time if it weren't for the rain letting up a bit and allowing the morning smells to be taken in by him. That, and the fact that he had decided to walk. Flying takes up a lot of energy, even if he does it mindlessly. Even more energy is taken if he hovers over half a foot. So, if he wanted to fly to the moon, he would be asleep by fifty feet.
The park is a mostly wooded area with scattered trails and some recreational courts. Aleks’ favorite being the basketball court. He sets down his umbrella next to one of the park benches and finds the ball he had hidden in the bushes for emergencies. He trods back over to the court to find two guys who seem to be just over his look-alike age coming to the basketball court from down the trail. They are carrying a ball of their own and walk like they own the court.
When in yelling distance, the bigger of the two (the one who is not holding the ball) does just.
