It was an early autumn like any other. Just another year in my lonely life, another cycle around the sun. I thought things would forever remain the same. That I wouldn't be able to reach for my dreams, or escape my mundane life, or even make a decent friend.
It was an autumn like any other. I got up. I went to school. I went to the hospital to visit my brother. I wished my life was different. I wished that I weren't just another fish lost in the current, swimming desperately, trying to find the right path.
He was by the koi pond in the hospital gardens, sitting on a bench with a notebook and pen in hand. Two large wings swooped from his back, shielding him from the afternoon light. Autumn leaves swirled around him, making him seem almost to be a tree sprite. It was his notebook that first drew my attention. Magic spiraled from his pen and gathered around him, and I knew he was a storyweaver. I stood captivated by the magic that poured from him, and I grew jealous.
He was everything I wanted to be.
After a moment, he looked up and our eyes met. For just a second, we saw each other. In that moment, I felt something change inside me.
