Luka stared at the white, blue and red website while wondering if all university websites should be this bland and boring. The site title said Erebus University with its common shield logo. Just as he scrolled down, there were photos of the articles and news. A video right above the footer completed the look with the widgets and copyright. All in all, pretty convincing for a cover up.
“Whoever designed this must have a PhD in laying low,” said his dad who suddenly was already sitting on his left.
“I mentioned it to Daisy this morning,” said Luka. “If she Googles it, this is what she’s going to see?”
“Let’s hope she forgot about it the way she forgot your birthday,” said his dad. Seeing the squint on his face, he grinned. “Sorry, can’t help it.”
“You need to forget about Daisy if you wanna join Lenz's fraternity,” his mom dragged a chair and sat on his right. She typed something on the search box. “Simping over one girl is not a popular habit among those boys."
Luka sighed. Both of his parents loved to tease him about his long time crush since his cousin had given him a surprise and he thought it was her. And it was back in eighth grade. Not to mention the constant use of the word 'simp' as soon as they found out what that means.
"Mom, Delta is not like that, okay?" he explained patiently. "And that's not the reason why I wanna join them. You know that."
"Yeah, yeah, we'll see about that," replied his mom while kept typing.
She then hit enter. The boring academic website turned into a black screen. A white indicator popped up in the middle and moved until it's complete. Then the Erebus University logo faded out, replaced by swirls that swirled into the screen. They glowed in white before they split the screen, revealing a dark gray website.
The headline and even the logo changed. It now said Erebus University for Supernatural and Magical Beings. Luka pulled the laptop closer when he read the phrase 'new technology from Planet Odevlar' and 'inter-galactic exchange students'. His eyes enlarged when a photo of some crazy beautiful girls with fishtails showed up. There was also a photo of a guy with horns and wings. But what took his breath away was the photo of 30 giant wolves standing on their two feet, posing like some kind of sports team players for a poster.
"That's so cool," even his dad gushed about it.
"Actually, the coolest thing about this university is that you get to major in a supernatural program and a human program," explained his mom. "So you can learn how to understand your werewolf self and still get to be a vet. It's a win-win."
Werewolf. Luka had never thought that such thing existed. And he surely had never dreamed to be one. Alas, his inheritance awakened and now he’s obliged to go to Erebus University, the only university in this whole world who would teach supernaturals how to survive.
Although, this newly revealed fact answered some of the weird mysteries regarding his family. All this time, he actually had thought that his mom left town every month to deal with his woman issues and artistic impulses. That his Opa's obvious dislike toward his dad was simply because he had been a German prick. That Tante Ingrid never remarried since no one could compare to Onkel Viktor’s charm. That Tante Annemarie and Onkel Lasse still looked like they're in their early 40's despite having five adult children and two grandsons due to their Scandinavian diet.
Turned out he was wrong. His family wasn't weird. His family was mythical.
"Yes, Mom, Tante Annie has told me that a zillion times already," he said. "Ariane is going to major in political science, because they don't have a government official in the family yet."
"Really? That's great," beamed his dad. "It's weird that Luka is gonna be the first vet in the family. Aren't all werewolves able to communicate with animals?"
"Yes, but no one has the guts to try to get into medicine like our boy," his mom brushed Luka's bro flow with a big smile on her face. "Although, I hope his ability will come sooner than mine. It took me six years to fluently communicate with my dog."
Right, that's the greatest perk of being a werewolf. At least according to Luka. He'd always wanted to be a veterinarian. And with werewolf's magical ability of zoolingualism, it would be so much easier for him to get a career in that field.
“By the way, Mom, Ariane's been applying to Erebus since last September,” Luka shifted the topic to the more immediate problem. “Do you think I still have a chance to get in?”
“Of course,” answered his mom.
“And if he gets in, can I come along to Erebus?” asked his dad. “Do they let humans go there?”
With his facial and body hair, brawny figure and love for children, Luka’s dad would have been a more convincing werewolf. But no, he was a human. It was his mom, the platinum blonde haired, blue eyed, pale white skinned, motherly woman, who acquired him the werewolf blood.
His younger sisters, Mitzi and Gerda, also shared the same appearance as him and their mom's two older sisters. If appearance determined the lineage, then those two little girls would come of age as werewolves too when they turned seventeen. However, his baby brother Florian, inherited his dad's brown hair. Luka couldn't wait to see if he would come of age. Florian could be the first brown coated werewolf in the family.
“Of course, honey,” answered his mom, making his dad grinned wider.
The three of them refocused on the website. Luka clicked the supernatural programs menu and scrolled to the bottom to find the werewolf section. There was an apply button next to the paragraph describing the program.
"Come on," sang his mom. "What are you waiting for?"
Luka slid his finger on the touchpad and tapped it when the cursor turned to finger while hovering on the 'apply' text. He leaned forward, his dad pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, while his mom pulled up her notepad and pen. They had work to do.
