Karma law is known by everyone, do something bad and the world will somehow return it to you. But what about the people that suffer from that bad? Is there any way to compensate them?
I was never a bully, but neither a bullied. I was in the stage of the cruel social chain that consisted in a limited number of people that were popular, but clearly uninterested in that; cold and antisocial. We just wandered around in our own world, highly respected by everyone, even bullies. You could say that we were a neutral group of power. We didn’t intervene in anything, didn’t cause anything. We were dancing in the shadows of a world at the desperate search of spotlights.
“Lucas, I’m going to work.” Mom shouted from downstairs.
“Okay! Have a good day!”
I heard the front door closing and covered myself with the blankets before starting to walk downstairs. We were in Christmas holidays, so I had all day free. My mother worked all days, except from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve. Since we were alone because my father was in prison, the house was completely mine.
With the blanket still covering my untamed frizzy hair, I sat on the living room’s sofa and switched the console on. When it started running, a weird game logo appeared in one of the empty gaps. I decided I would play it, but after eating breakfast.
I went to the kitchen and started cooking some bacon. Since I had to cook for myself everyday, I was able to survive with anything comestible. I loved the smell of meat at the heat, it made me remind old times with my family. We used to go camping in the middle of the forest, where nobody ever went. A natural paradise.
I put the bacon in a little bowl with lid and returned where my console was waiting. The strange logo was from a game I didn’t know about. I guessed it was a Christmas present or a demo, so I started it.
But as soon as I did, a bright flash coming from the screen made me go blind for a few seconds. I no longer felt my body, it was as if I were floating in the space. Even though my eyes were open, I only saw white. Until I fell unconscious.
However, in the middle of the infinite darkness, a voice woke me up.
“Hello, New Player.” A weird elfic male appeared in front of me. “I’m North, your assigned guide.” He said, clearly not happy with it. “Your first step in this dangerous adventure is choosing a name.”
“Excuse me, but what is this?” I asked, confused.
“You are in Demetrys, realm of the digital world.”
“Wait… Did you just say digital world?”
“Indeed I did, welcome New Player. Choose your name and write it here.” He said as he signalled a small flying screen.
I approached it and a small light keyboard appeared under it. I quickly typed my usual username and the screen disappeared.
“Huh? That’s a good name, I expected something more stupid.” North said, looking at the screen of his bracelet.
