The room felt suffocating, the air thick with unease. I struggled to make sense of everything. Kevin, with his unsettling red eyes, and the doctor, whose hands were trembling as he fiddled with a syringe.
“You’ve been in a coma,” Kevin said, breaking the silence. “Two days. We found you in the alley after the attack. We carried you here to keep you safe.”
“Who are you?” I asked, still dazed. “What happened? Where am I?”
Kevin smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m Kevin. This is my friend, Dr. Harlow. We were looking for survivors, and you were the only one left alive in the area. You were untouched. The others...” He trailed off, but I knew what he meant. “We brought you here because you were the only one who had a chance.”
My mind raced. “Why me? Why not anyone else?”
Kevin’s smile flickered. “Because you weren’t dead, kid. That’s all. We found you and acted fast. We didn’t want to leave you to die like the others.”
The more he spoke, the more uneasy I became. Something about him felt... wrong. There was a hidden agenda in his voice, a coldness beneath his words.
“What happened out there?” I asked, voice trembling.
“A disaster,” Kevin said, as if it were the simplest thing. “A humanoid robot—part of an alien invasion—came down and began slaughtering the town. It was chaos. People were dying left and right, and we were lucky to have gotten to you before anyone else could.”
I looked around the room, trying to make sense of it all. “So you’re just saving random people?”
Kevin’s smile twisted. “Let’s just say we’re saving the ones we can. But you’re lucky. Most didn’t make it. We didn’t think you’d survive, but when we saw your body moving, we knew we had to act quickly.”
I didn’t know whether to trust him. My body ached, but it was more from fear than anything else. I felt something in the pit of my stomach that told me something wasn’t right.
“Why did you carry only me?” I asked, suspicion creeping into my voice.
Kevin paused, his expression tightening. “Like I said, you weren’t injured. We didn’t have time to save anyone else. We had to act fast.”
I hesitated, weighing his words. Something wasn’t adding up, but my brain was still too foggy to connect the dots.
Before I could speak again, the doctor stepped forward, holding a syringe filled with a dark liquid. “We need to give him something to stabilize him,” he said in a shaky voice.
“Wait, what is that?” I asked, growing panicked again.
“It’s just a sedative,” Kevin replied smoothly, but I could hear the edge in his voice. “Nothing to worry about. You’ve been through a lot.”
I tried to back away, but my limbs felt heavy, sluggish. The doctor didn’t hesitate—he pushed the needle into my arm, and a cold rush spread.
