Blinding light of white and blue flashed over craggy surfaces, illuminating the dark interior of the cave and casting horrific shadows all around her.
Iola drew her fur-lined cloak tightly around her slender shoulders and shivered slightly, anticipating the loud roll of thunder to follow.
The deafening rupture of sound, further amplified by her cavernous refuge, made Iola’s young heart skip a beat yet again; regardless of how prepared she was for it this time.
Then the deathly silence resumed its vigil, save for the rhythmic cadence of the falling rain. It was a light rain, even though the heavens unleashed a hellish fury of thunder and lightning.
Something about this sudden storm felt unnatural to the nineteen year old, but more pressing matters occupied her mind.
Would she see her beloved grandfather again? Was the cave in which she had taken shelter, at this unholy hour of night, a safe place?
And when would her travelling companion return, if she ever would?
Three more times the dank and musty interior of the cave was bathed with brilliance.
The last one casting the silhouette of someone tall and powerfully built across the narrow entrance.
Iola felt relief and terror at the same instant.
Was that Dacia or someone else?
She didn’t have to wait long to know.
“Iola. Are you alright?” The mercenary inquired as she carefully made her way into the cave.
“Yes, Dacia, I am.” Iola responded, taking a long look at the muscular warrior woman wearing tanned leather leggings, heavy boots and a metal-studded jerkin as another flash of lightning illuminated the cave. “Did you find anything... in this horrible storm?”
“One big fat rabbit... and another smaller one.” Dacia replied with a loud laugh, shaking droplets of rain off her shoulder length dark hair.
