Sometimes things happen when you least expect them. When you believe that your life has found just the right path, something happens that changes what you think you know about yourself, about life in general.
Often that all starts with what appears to be just another ordinary day.
Sitting in the coffee shop waiting for her friend to come back from the bathroom, Mia heard the conversation happening at the table next to hers.
There were two guys, approximately her age, talking. One of them made a very clever pun, but the other guy didn't even smile. Mia tried to hide her smile, but it was impossible to do so.
Thus, she decided to use her old trick, to pretend she was laughing at a funny text message she just received.
She barely managed to get her phone out of her pocket before bursting out in laughter. Although on many occasions that trick had worked well, this time, it was different.
Either the guy was paying more attention to her than she anticipated, or she was that obvious. Either way, he immediately realized she was laughing at his funny pun and decided to use the opportunity to prove it.
So, he waited until she stopped laughing and started drinking her cocktail.
While she was taking a sip of her drink, he told his friend another pun that was wonderfully connected with the previous one.
The friend reacted in the same way, bored out of his mind. However, the girl almost choked on her drink, laughing out loud. She was trying to stop, but that only made her laugh more.
As for Nick, the guy who made the pun, her laughter was the first natural and wholehearted laughter he had heard in years. People around him often laughed, especially girls. However, it was always the fake laughter intended to convince him they understood him. That they appreciated his jokes, although they didn't.
They wanted him to think they truly appreciated him so that he would date them. Nick found it odd that the girls believed that if they pretended, he would ask them out.
He was twenty-seven years old and very handsome, a perfect catch for the girls who wanted marriage. Love was not a priority for many of them. They just wanted to catch a well-situated guy.
Nick had his own business, which meant he was both good-looking and wealthy. For that reason, women swarmed around him. However, mostly they didn't have any real feelings for him.
Most people around Nick were just acting the way they thought he wanted. That was why he liked his friend Ed with whom he was sitting. Ed was honest.
However, Nick had never met an honest girl that he could appreciate. Thus, it was like a breath of fresh air for him to hear that type of pure laughter.
While Nick contemplated those life truths, Mia's laughter started subsiding, and she stole a shy glance towards his table. Their eyes met for just a second, but it was enough for her to turn crimson red.
That made Nick want to know what those deep blue eyes were hiding. After all, no one ever blushed in his presence. However, maybe that was because he spent a lot of his time surrounded by overconfident people. It wasn't his choice, but those kinds of people seemed to gravitate towards him.
The problem was that most of those people had a false sense of security. They were mostly shallow people who didn't actually care about anything but themselves. Nick could tell that the girl he was looking at was weird, as weird as he was, and he really wanted to connect with her.
It was strange because he saw her for the first time. Yet, he wanted them to be weird together. He could see them together.
No one ever laughed at his puns. They all thought that making puns was childish, although they would never tell him something like that. Yet, there she was, crying from laughter because of his stupid pun.
"Oh, God, I am in love. That's impossible! I can't be in love with the girl I don't even know," he thought to himself.
Although Nick tried to convince himself that he was only curious, he knew in his heart that he was actually in love. In love, as he had never been before, love at first sight.
Even from just one glance, he could tell that she was shy, and he knew that a direct approach would only scare her off. Used to approaching everything directly, he found himself in uncharted territory.
She didn't seem like the kind of girl who felt comfortable being approached by guys, but Nick had to do something. He couldn't just let her slip away. He had to think fast, and a stupid idea came to his mind, but it was the only idea he had.
