My name is Risho Mitsuki, and I am one of the most unfortunate people in the world. My life was almost laughable— honestly, you would think whatever gods created me just did it all for a joke.
I am the youngest child, born from a mother and father who no longer loved each other, during the time when I was just a toddler, Risho Kawakida and Risho Akira were already finalizing the details of the divorce papers. My Mom gained custody over me while my Dad moved to Shibuaya leaving the rest of us behind.
Because of that, my Dad was rarely in my life for the first part of my childhood. I would only ever see him in pictures and whenever I brought him up to my mother she would erupt like a volcano.
My bad luck started with my birth. The family was already falling apart and my Mom was a single parent who worked tirelessly just to make ends meet. She devoted hours to making sure her two children— which was me and my older sister were successful.
Sadly, I, Risho Mitsuki turned out to be a disappointment.
For whatever reason, my body was small and frail. No matter how much I ate I never gained weight and I was as weak as a twig. Almost all the clothes I wore seemed too big for me— the slaves in all my shirts being so long that they covered my hands. I was also not very intelligent and my grades were not presentable for a model student. The only reason is due to extra classes and the credits used for them to help me succeed further— despite many people saying I didn’t deserve to.
I was also so unbelievably shy to the point I would barely talk. As a factor, I made no friends and became an outcast quickly wherever I was.
Seeing how I was struggling, my Mom would get me tested to see if I had a disability and if there was any solution for me. Whatever the results of the test she never told me, but in the end, my efforts in education and life in general seemed to disturb her.
The main reason for why was that she compared me a lot to my older sister— Risho Otoki.
Otoki is three years older than me and is the polar opposite of what I am. She is confident, pretty, outspoken, intelligent, and has many friends. She is at the top of her class and is the President of the Student Council. My Mom would always say that Otoki was destined to do great things.
As for me, I was a disappointment. My Mom would scold and push me hard to get better but it never succeeded. Even as I entered high school, the issues that followed me like spirits never went away. As a matter of fact, they doubled in problems as I reached the stage of my teenage years.
At the age of fifteen, I was admitted into the same high school my sister was in, Inoue High. Despite many good things being said about the school itself, my entire experience was far from enjoyable.
It was pretty advent on my first day of coming to the school that was going to have a horrible time.
In front of the homeroom, I nervously introduced myself to the front of the class while stuttering like a fool in the middle of a freezing blizzard. Once I was done I took an empty seat at the back of the class, the reason why I sat there was because it was the only seat that was available— I want you guys to remember that.
Four minutes after class started and the teacher, named Mr. Arata started his lecture the door flew open to reveal a new person. It was a gorgeous girl with pale skin, purple eyes, and lavender hair tied into a ponytail with a white ribbon.
She strolled into the room with an uncaring attitude, completely ignoring Mr. Arata. The moment I saw that, I closed my eyes and turned my head thinking that the strict-looking teacher would start to go off on the female student. However, Mr. Arata continued to teach the class as if nothing had happened which surprised me. And before I knew it, the same girl was standing right on the side of me. She stared at me with somewhat of a confused glance.
“Who are you?” The girl asked in a very sassy voice. “I’ve never seen you before. Are you in the wrong class?”
“O-oh! No, I’m new here! My name is Risho Mitsuki, it’s nice to meet you!”
I held out my hand for a handshake. The girl stared at my hand and skinned up her face in disgust.
“So…you’re the new guy? That’s super disappointing! I was hoping for someone tall and handsome!”
Realizing that the female student in front of me had no intention of being nice I lowered my hand and politely bowed my head as I turned back to Mr. Arata who was still teaching.
“Excuse me~?”
The voice of the girl made me turn back to her again. I was surprised that she was still standing near me. She wore a large frown and she stomped her foot angrily.
“Can you move?”
“H-huh? What?”
“Can. You. Move?”
“M-move? Why?”
“The seat you are sitting in is my seat. I love this spot because it looks over the window where I can see the outside.”
“Oh— huh…I didn’t know.”
“Well, of course, you didn’t, 'cause you’re new! Try to not make that same mistake again, now get up!”
The girl was getting louder and students who were near us started glancing over. My face turned red in embarrassment.
I looked up at the female student and replied, “I-I had no choice but to sit here! There were no other desks!”
“…so?”
“U-um…so just ask the teacher if we can bring in another desk from another classroom or something…”
The girl raised an eyebrow.
“Why would I do that?”
“Because…regardless if I move one of us won’t have a seat…I-I mean I’m not going to sit on the floor!”
I let out a quiet laugh to ease the growing tension. Sadly it had little effect as the female student continued to stare at me with a less than an amused look.
“Look loser, I’m not going to tell you again…”
The girl leaned in closer to me. I backed away as her purple eyes peered right into my own making me feel smaller than I already was
“Get. Up…”
“O-okay! B-but let’s tell the teacher—“
BAM!
As fast as a bat being swung to hit a baseball, a fist that appeared so face hit its target making them crash onto the floor.
Letting you know now, that the person who was hit was not me, but the girl. And no— I was not the one who hit her, she hit herself.
“Huh?”
The girl fell to the floor, knocking into the desk behind her. The noise finally made Mr. Arata stop his lecture and everyone in the class turned to the back of the class. Clutching her bleeding nose, the female student started to cry and screamed out to the teacher.
“MR. ARATA!!!”
The teacher ran over to the back of the class and was quickly trying to help the student up.
“THIS GUY PUNCHED ME!”
“H-how dare you Risho!”
Before I could even explain myself, I was already made into the villain. Mr. Arata screamed at my face as everyone in the class watched. I did nothing but cower under the might of the strict teacher and I swore I saw the female student, who hid right behind him smirking.
After I was done being scolded, I was forced to go to the principal’s office. As I waited outside the door, I saw my Mom coming in with a very upset look on her face. In the office, the principal gave my Mom a whole dramatic story of how I assaulted the girl, who was named Utose Higane.
“You are lucky that Miss Utose begged her father not to let this become a legal matter! All she asks is a verbal apology from you, Mr. Risho!”
“B-but, sir!” I begged. “I-I really didn’t— I wasn’t trying to—“
“Enough Mistuki!”
My Mom yelled at me. Her harsh tone made me swallow any other words I was going to say.
“Admit to your faults and apologize! Honestly, I thought I raised you better…”
“M-Mom…”
With my head hung low I exited the room and waiting outside was my sister with folded arms. While our Mom went to the bathroom, Otoki pulled me into an empty classroom and we talked.
“You made a huge mistake, Mitsuki.”
“It’s not my fault!” I shouted. “T-that girl— Utose or whatever— she punched herself and told the teacher about me!”
Otoki let out a heavy sigh before replying.
“Regardless if what you said is true, it will not matter. Do you know who the Utose family are?”
“N-no?”
“Then I’ll tell you. I’ve known about Utose Higane last year when she enrolled and she is nothing but trouble. No matter how she acts no one can do anything against her because of the social standing of the Utose family. Her father, Utose Higurashi is a powerful man who owns one of the biggest software companies in Shibuya— the CLN Company.”
“A-are they that important?”
Otoki nodded.
“If you continue to try and fight back against her, Utose-chan will use all the power at her disposal to ruin you. Expulsion will only be the start. Your reputation would be ruined and it would be basically impossible to enroll you in another school.”
My face turned pale after my sister laid down all the bullet points.
“If you wish to continue pursuing your educational prowess…then just apologize.”
Taking Otoki’s words to heart, I met with my Mom in the principal’s office. Different from earlier, Utose Higane was there waiting with a bandaged nose and a huge smile like a child who just got a gift. In front of her was a middle-aged man who looked so imposing and intimidating— Utose Higurashi. He wore a rich-looking black business suit that somewhat did not even have a speck of dust on it and the moment we saw him we bowed in respect.
Once the greetings were done, I wasted no time and got on my knees. I bowed my head to the floor and my Mom copied my movements.
“I am so very sorry for hurting you, Utose Higane!”
“I am so very sorry for my son’s actions!”
After our apologies were handed out, I could hear Utose Higane obnoxiously giggling before she gave her answer.
“All is forgiven~!”
I gritted my teeth.
“I’m sure there won’t be any difficulties from here on out~…”
From that day forward, my high school life had become a living hell because I became Utose Higane’s plaything.
