Hey there folks. I wanted to share an update on where I'm at with the comic's hiatus.
A few months back, I very seriously contemplated putting the series on indefinite hiatus (don't worry, that's not what's happening here). I've struggled with burnout a lot during the last few chapters. Reflecting on it, I've come to the realization that I was putting a lot of unnecessary stress on myself because I felt like I had to approach making the comic like a professional webcomic creator would. I felt like I had to make the panels as polished as possible, do social media promotion (which I hate SO MUCH), stress over my numbers and performance, and spend long hours every day working on it to make sure I could hit deadlines, regardless of my physical and mental exhaustion.
Focusing on all of that really took away the joy that I felt just making the comic and sharing it with my readers. But, while I am grateful for the financial support I've received through events like Inkgiving and the like, I've realized I don't actually want to approach the comic like it's my job. It being profitable and attracting a large audience doesn't need to be the goal. The readers I already have are awesome. And lifting those expectations from myself made me actually feel excited to work on the comic again. 😄
So, here's my new plan going forward: I'm going to work on each story arc of the comic, and not start posting it until it's entirely finished. That way I'm not stressing about deadlines, and the readers get to have a more enjoyable and regular reading experience. The page version of the comic will probably be able to update 2 or 3 times a week, to allow it to keep pace with the scroll version.
The downside of course is that this means my hiatus will be going on a while longer. I'm estimating that this story arc will be around 3-4 chapters, and while I've already drawn a decent chunk of pages, I've still got a lot ahead of me. I'm excited for when I finally get to share it with you all.
Worry not! If you are not having fun doing a penniless job, then why do it at all? I completely understand from where does you come from (as a creator, also) and completely agree with the social media hate. Work at your own pace, nobody should do more than they want to do. Have a nice day, cheers!
Today is TBO's third anniversary, and I've just launched a scroll format version of it both here on Tapas as well as over on Webtoon! If that sounds like your jam I'd appreciate you checking it out - I put a lot of thought into figuring out how best to convert it to scroll format and adding some extra effects to enhance the reading experience. I've also never posted on Webtoon before so I'm not sure what to expect, if you'd like to give the comic some love over there to give it a boost I'd super appreciate it.
For the folks that prefer page format, don't worry! The original page format version isn't going anywhere. It will likely always be the most up to date version of the comic, with the scroll versions lagging a bit behind. I'm still working on the next chapters, and I hope to have new pages to share with ya'll soon!
Thanks as always for your support, and here's that Webtoon link if you're interested: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/the-broken-ones/list?title_no=756111
Hey there folks! Wanted to send out a quick post-Inksgiving/end of year update.
First off, big thank you once again for the Ink! More people than I've ever had before donated enough to win a character cameo in the comic. I'll be reaching out to the winners when I get closer to a spot where I can include the cameos, but wanted to give you all a shout-out here and let you know you're on my list to get that cameo. So big thanks to: manofathousandfaces, Mistah Twennysebben, Cavechan, Zee, oshi rockingham, and Miss Monocle! <3
As for the other Inksgiving prizes, they are on my to do list! I've actually only got around 4-6 pages left to wrap up Chapter 8, so I'm gonna prioritize finishing that first. I'm sure you all have noticed the update speed has slowed to a crawl...the last two and half months have been super hectic and stressful for me with a ton of renovations going on where I live, and it has thrown my whole schedule out of whack. The good news is, that stuff should be wrapping up this month, so I can hopefully get back into the swing of things soon. I appreciate you all sticking with me!
We're getting close to the end of Inksgiving, thank you everyone for your support! <3 I think I might not have made the info about the character voting prominent enough, so just for anyone who missed it - if you want the Ink you donated earlier to go towards a specific character, just mention who you want to vote for here and I'll adjust the score accordingly. It's a tight race currently and there will be a cool wallpaper illustration made of whoever wins!
Hey all, wanted to drop in with an update since it's been an extra long gap without me posting here. I am still here and hoping to get new pages out soon! The entire month of September kicked my ass, and I started getting back on track in October but now I'm having major issues with my laptop that I do all my art on, so I'm currently unable to work on pages at all, argh. >.< I'm trying to get it fixed ASAP, I've got a nice three page update almost ready to post for you all as soon as I can get working again and finish the shading on those pages.
Hope everyone is doing well, and looking forward to sharing more of the story with you all as soon as technology stops being a menace!
Hey there folks, so life is continuing to be a bit messy for me lately. I've used up most of my buffer and working on art is still going slower than usual for me. And on top of that, the upcoming scene is gonna have some episodes where I need to go beyond my usual 2 pages in order to keep the pacing how I'd like it.
So I'm gonna be going a bit loose with the schedule for a bit, likely for the rest of this chapter. Whenever I finish an episode I'll go ahead and schedule it for the upcoming Friday, but that will likely result in some variation in how much time passes between updates. The one thing I can promise you all is that I am gonna keep plugging along even if the gaps between updates are longer. The comic isn't going anywhere. :)
I took part in a zine for Women's History Month along with 13 other artists! My piece is up today, showing off some of the women from The Broken Ones (including a couple who haven't appeared officially in the story yet, oooo). You can check it out as well as the awesome work from the other artists involved here: https://tapas.io/series/WHMWebcomicZine2021
Hey there folks!
Since it's somehow already March (how?!) I wanted to give an update on how much longer the comic will be on hiatus. I've got the script for the next chapter finished, and I've been working on drawing the pages to try to build up my buffer before I return to active updating. I'm not gonna set an exact date yet, but tentatively I'm hoping to return from hiatus and start Chapter 8 come April. See you all then! :)
Hey all! Sorry I've been a bit quiet, this month has been a little more hectic than I was expecting. I recently adopted a second cat so a lot of my time and energy has been going towards getting the new kitty adjusted and introduced to my established cat. :) I'm still hoping to start posting some intermission content this month, though, it's just been a bit delayed.
Inksgiving is also coming up (Friday, Nov 20th at 3pm PST to Sunday, Nov 22nd 3pm PST), and I've decided that I'm gonna keep things pretty low-key with it this year. I'm gonna run with mostly the same rewards I used last year – I'll set a goal for the event, and if we reach it I'll do a raffle of everyone who donated with the winner getting an illustration of a character of their choice. I'll also do character cameos in the comic for anyone who donates 1500 ink or more during the event! Here's a link to last year's announcement if you're looking for more info on how Inksgiving works: https://tapas.io/episode/1569053
His name is Apollo! His new big sister is Artemis, so I decided to keep running with the mythology theme I have going. I apparently can't attach an image to a reply but he's a red/flame point siamese mix, so very sunny coloration. ^_^
Hey there folks. I've been dealing with some burnout in the last few weeks, combined with not feeling too well due to lots of smoke in the air from the wildfires in my state. :/ Since I'm getting close to the end of this story arc I'd wanted to just push through and finish the chapter, but it's becoming clear to me that that's probably not the best choice for my health. I'm gonna take a week off from working on the comic so I can have some time to relax without feeling guilty about it. The new episode will go up this week as normal, but I'll be skipping next week's update. Thank you all for reading and take care! <3
I'm gonna guess California? I've still got family down there dealing with the annual wildfires, and up here in Oregon we're getting the occasional smoky day. Don't force yourself and stay safe/sane.
Thanks for the support, everyone. :) I'm in Colorado, and we've had four different wildfires burning in the mountains recently, I think partially due to a drought here. One of them just massively grew in size and we're getting a lot of smoke from it where I live, which isn't getting along too well with my asthma. For now I'm trying to stay inside and take it easy.
