It's weird knowing that I'm surrounded by all these kids and I can't relate to any of them, because I don't have any powers. I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of having powers either, so it's just a total mystery to me how they even work. Things have certainly gotten easier since Orovax had the food trucks come, which they do once every two weeks. She also helps me and the twins make meals, which really surprised me, seeing as her hair was purple. Not that I have a stigma against people with colored hair, but it's been a month since she came and her hair is still purple, almost as if it's natural, but it couldn't be... Could it?
"Igiloram, you've been staring at that plant for about an hour." I hear from behind me. I turn around and see my manager, Diun Targess, glaring at me. I blushed, realizing that I was at work. My manager was over 25 cm taller than me and I was 175 cm. His hair was very dark brown, almost black, but there wasn't much of it.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Targess." I said quickly, "It won't happen again."
"Just because you're the CEO's son doesn't mean I'll be easy on you." Mr. Targess said, "I expect more from you. Now, do your job." I turned back to my computer and went back to work. When I knew that my manager was nowhere in sight, I sighed. I felt like I'd be beat up if I messed up again, seeing as my manager was a big guy and was also very angry, almost all the time, I've literally never seen him smile. I finished the work that was due the next day, seeing as I had already finished the work for the day already, and then went home on time.
"You really don't care, do you?" a girl's voice asked from the back of my van. I turned around and almost had a heart attack. Orovax was sitting in the back of my van.
"How long have you been there?" I asked as I tried calming down.
"Not long." Orovax said, "School is just a little down the street." I frowned.
"No, the middle school is miles away." I said. Orovax laughed.
"I'm a high school girl." Orovax said, "Idiot."
"But that's even farther away." I said. Orovax laughed again.
"No, idiot." Orovax said, "The high school is literally a mile away."
"But why are you in my car?" I asked. Orovax looked at me like I was the idiot of the year or something.
"I'm not walking home." Orovax said, "Besides, I need something from the store." I frowned, what could she possibly need that we don't have?
"Like what?" I asked.
"Feminine care products." Orovax said.
"I'll give you money, so you go in and get it." I said. Orovax frowned.
"No." Orovax said, "You're coming with me."
"I don't know what my aunt usually got, so I can't go..." I said, "Wait, you want me to go with you? For a second, I thought you wanted me to go in there alone." Orovax laughed and shot me a look that said 'go die'.
"Yes, come with me." Orovax said, "Oh and we need soap and stuff." I sighed and started my car. We went to the store and got soap, deodorant, the stuff Orovax was talking about, and razors. So when we got home, all the children were wondering where I was.
"Why didn't you come home right away?" I was asked the second I entered the house by one of the older girls. It looked like all the kids, aside from Orovax was in the lobby (the front room).
"I went to the store." I said, "Can you kids help me unpack the car?"
"Yeah, sure, whatever." that same girl said. Most of the kids, excluding the youngest eight, who were all elementary school children or younger.
"Why was Orovax with you?" the eldest of the eight youngest asked me.
"I have no idea, but she was helpful in helping me with buying everything." I said, "I'd be too embarrassed to go alone."
"Why didn't you stop at home first?" another one of the little ones asked. I frowned.
"I don't even know." I said. Soon, all the bags were brought inside and emptied.
"How did you know that we needed this stuff?" the girl twin asked me.
"Orovax told me." I said. She gave me an inquisitive look.
"She didn't come straight home either." the girl twin said, "Don't tell me that you were acting inappropriate with her." I looked at her like she had two heads, why would she ask me that in front of all the kids?
"No." I said, "I would never do that."
"But you remember her name and not anyone else's." the girl twin said.
"There's a lot of you, how am I supposed to remember them all?" I asked. All the kids, aside from Orovax glared at me.
"You shouldn't have to make up excuses." the girl twin said, "You should know. We've already lived together for five months." I frowned.
"Okay..." I said, "Your name is Deraneth. Your twin's name is Izadeth. The three year old boy who can turn into a pillow is named Darinus. Kierane is the little girl with pigtails. Ambinessa is the girl who can shout really loud. Benaston is the boy with glasses. Ciran is the boy with red hair and freckles. Timessin is the boy with big feet and an obvious lisp. Aimiley is the four year old girl who has red hair. Tiyan is the little boy who likes spaghetti a little too much. Nyani is the little girl who overflows one of the tubs upstairs at least once a week. Nyder is the little boy who complains about not having everything he wants. Havelin is the little girl who really hates me and won't tell me why. Anlesta is the little girl who constantly has hair in front of her face and frankly scares the hell out of me." Everyone's glares turned into stares, but Deraneth and Nyder, I think, were still frowning.
"I'm a girl!" Nyder shouted.
"Oh..." I said, "Okay, we have more girls than boys."
"Why does that matter?" Ambinessa asked, almost angrily.
"It doesn't." I said, "I just was trying to figure everything out in my head and accidentally spat that out." Orovax put a hand on my shoulder.
"You're an idiot." Orovax said, "I got fifteen frames. You're going to put a picture of each one of us in them and write our names on them. Put them somewhere you'll see them everyday. That way, you'll be reminded all the time."
"That sounds helpful." I said. Orovax smirked and walked away, by this time all the kids dispersed and went to put away the things they needed. I walked over and noticed that there was nothing where all the things had previously been. I really needed soap, I guess I'm screwed.
Orovax came down the stairs with bags in her hands, which she gave to me. Inside the bags were the frames with names and pictures of the children in them with their names at the bottom. She already did what she told me to do, but before I could thank her, she was gone. She's very mysterious.
