Everyone began to look around, wondering what could have been the source of the sound. Some thought that Sans had let off the fireworks early, but the sky was still clear, and Sans was as confused as everyone else, although he reacted better. He grabbed Toriel and pulled her over toward Frisk, Asriel and Chara.
“Any clue what’s going on?” he asked, as Toriel caught her breath.
Chara shook her head.
“I heard more of the sounds when you were coming over here, but i have no clue what they were.”
Frisk allowed her gaze to wander, taking in their surroundings, seeing if there was anything wrong right there. Suddenly, she tugged on Sans’ jacket.
“Sans,, something is wrong at the council building!”
As Sans turned, smoke billowed out of the building on the hill, as more sharp cracks filled the air. Frisk had a bad feeling what they were.
Sans swore. He grabbed his phone, and dialed Undine’s number.
“Come on come on! Undine? Yes, I know i’m supposed to be at a wedding. I need you to bring all your patrols back in. I’m about to call Alphys. We need to start evacuating to the tunnels NOW.”
An angry voice came from the other side of the phone.
“I get that you don’t like at, though I appreciate you still did it. If you want proof of n emergency, look to the council hall.”
Silence greeted this, followed by a “NO!” that could be heard by everyone around Sans.
“Just bring in your patrols, and meet us at the tunnels. I know you want to fight but everyone here needs you. You’re one of the only ones who will stand a chance if they find us. Think about the people. Think about Alphys.”
A muttered response came from the other end of the line before Sans hung up, quickly dialing Alphys.
“Hey ALph, you get what’s happening? Yes, Undyne is safe. She is going to meet us at the tunnels. I need you to send the EVAC warning. We need to get out of here. Do we have any casualties yet?”
As Sans talked to Alphys, Frisk focused on the blue stone around her neck. It disappeared from the chain, as a slender sword appeared in her hand. It’s pommel held the stone that had been around her neck, and the blade was slightly blued. When she turned around, Asriel had his duel sabres, designed after his Chaos Sabres, and Chara was holding a small knife. The stones had been a gift from Sans, when they first came to the surface. He had said they needed a way to defend themselves and each other if the need arose. Chara was the only one who could change the form of her’s at will.
“That many? Are you sure? Darn it, this is happening too fast. Is there any sign of Asgore? Ok, I’ll look for him. Just do what you need to do.”
Sans snapped the phone shut.
“Alphys is going to sound the EVAC alarm, signaling everyone to head for the tunnels. The guard will make sure we aren't followed. I can see that you activated your stones, so keep them active until we are out of this mess. Oh, and keep Toriel safe. If you don’t, I may have to kill you.”
Frisk and Chara glanced at each other. They could both see what Sans was avoiding saying. And obviously, Toriel could too.
“Sans, you say that like you wont be there. So WHERE are you going?”
Sans sighed.
“Asgore is missing. And as bad a king as he was, I can’t just let he get killed.”
“Killed?!”
A siren began to wail in the background.
“The humans are attacking the town. They already got the rest of the council, as well as a third of the town. I’m not letting them add him to that list.”
Toriel stood looking at him for a moment, before stepping forward and giving him a kiss.
“Good luck.”
Sans grinned.
“Who needs luck?” He said, vanishing in a flurry of particles.
Most of the others had already started heading to the edge of town, where the entrance to the tunnels were located. Only a few remain besides them, including MK (Monster Kid) and Mettaton.
Toriel looked once at the hill, where the blaze continued, before hurrying after the others. Frisk went to follow, falling in beside Mettaton, his hand traded out for an energy cannon.
“So what’s the plan darling?” He asked, as though Frisk would know.
Frisk sighed.
“Get everyone into the tunnels and to safety. Beyond that, I don’t know.”
Mettaton nodded, not wasting power on anymore speech.
Frisk turned to look behind them, only to see something large hurtling towards them, fast. There was no way they could dodge it in time.
Suddenly, a shadow flew over their heads, and a skeleton landed on front of them, slightly taller than Sans, but with the same shape. His purple hoodie fluttered in the wind of his landing. Raising one hand, he looked at the boulder flying toward them.
“Quantum Scythe!” He yelled. Sweeping his arm through the air. Where his arm traveled, a crescent of energy flew out, sailing toward the rock. When it impacted, the rock exploded, most of the debris going back the way it came.
As the skeleton lowered his hand, he turned to look at the group.Chara and Asriel gripped their weapons, not sure whether to expect a fight or not. The monsters eyes glowed dimly, one a purple, one a dark blue.
“You know, running away from the people chucking giant rocks at you TENDS to be a good idea.”
Frisk shook herself, turning to run the direction Toriel and the others went. The stranger kept up, occasionally glancing behind them. Chara still glared t him suspiciously.
“Who the freak are you?!”
The stranger gave a sigh like the ones Sans gave Frisk when he was trying to explain Time and Space.
“Sorry I didn’t have time to introduce myself when I was saving your life. Speaking of which, that’s my name. Life.”
Silence from behind, until….
“Why would you be named life?”
Life sighed again, pointing to the road ahead of them. Along the side, a tree sprouted, grew, and blossomed within three seconds.
“THAT is why i’m called Life. And if you would like to stop insulting my name, we are almost to the edge of town.”
And they were. The turned the final corner to see everyone gathered around a large boulder. When they made their way to the front, the saw undine struggling to lift it.
“Stupid rock slide!” She muttered.
Life looked at the boulder.
“I take it that that os our exit under there?”
Alphys looked at Life for a moment, before pointing a small device from her pocket at him and pressing some buttons. When she was satisfied, she put the device away.
“A recent rockslide covered our escape route. “
Life nodded.
“Everybody stand back.”
Undyne backed up, not knowing what this stanger might do.
“Quantum Cannon!” he shouted, pointing his hand at the boulder. A ball of green energy burst from his hand, obliterating the boulder and revealing a large patch of dead grass.
Undyne nodded in approval, before shouting orders.
“Everyone on the dead spot!”
Everyone began to shuffle on. Frisk, Toriel and Chara remained at the edge, looking out at the town. Toriel looked at Frisk worriedly, before a voice interrupted them.
“Hey, could you make room?”
Sans stood next to them, supporting a wounded Asgore.
“We don’t want to miss our ride.”
Toriel pulled them onto the platform, as Alphys yelled “Descending!”
The platform began to sink into the ground, taking what remained of the monsters with it.
