Phone vibrating in his pocket. He set down his glass of water on the counter in the kitchen of a tiny apartment. Pulling it out, he glanced at it.
Chris's name above a text on the lock screen. As he read it, his heart leapt.
You're coming on the hunt tomorrow. I suggest not staying up too late. We're leaving at 4 am.
“Guess who's finally going on a hunt, mothafuckas!” He yelled in excitement.
Bumbling footsteps.
Jack's baby face appeared in the kitchen entrance first. His green eyes twinkled under red hair.
“No way! You lucky son of a bitch!” His grin nearly reached his freckles.
Dave roughly shoved him out of the way. His stocky frame nearly filled the doorway. Dread locks waved over his face. His smile shined bright against his ebony skin.
“Hot damn, dude! 'Bout fucking time.” Dave laughed as he walked over.
He coughed as Dave slapped him on the back. That resulted in a laugh. Jack hopped up and slid onto the counter.
“You gotta tell us the gory details.” Jack smirked.
“You're a sicko.” He shot back.
“This isn't a horror game, Jackizoid.” Dave joked.
“Fuck off. I'm jealous. I'd love to be a wolf, hunting down food like a wild beast. Ripping flesh with fangs.” Jack said, his smirk going wicked.
Danny laughed, “You are way over glorifying it.”
“Don't play it off, dumbass. You know you're freaking pumped about it.” He sneered.
“Hell yeah, I am!”
Toilet flushing. Door opening. Ric's tall, caramel complexion appeared. Straight, jet black hair almost covered his almond eyes.
“Who the hell is trying to get me in trouble again by yelling?” Ric grunted as he walked in.
“Shut it, ya priss. What took you so long in there anyways? Get your dick caught in your zipper again?” Dave snickered.
“Would you piss off about that! Fuckin' one time!” Ric groaned as he rolled his eyes at the ceiling.
“We're never letting you live that down, cherry pop.” Jack cackled.
Ric's eyes flashed as he roughly punched Jack in the shoulder.
“Fuckin'-A man, you know I'mma lil bitch! That shit hurts.” Jack yelped.
Jack tried to punch back, but missed when Ric dodged.
“Then don't act like one and I won't beat your ass!” Ric huffed.
“Shut it, ya love birds.” Dave chuckled.
Ric glared. Jack grinned.
“So little wolfy here gets to finally kill something.” Dave said, playfully pushing him.
Danny chuckled with a big grin.
Ric's eyes widened, “Holy shit man. No way!”
Danny nodded, “It's gonna be epic.”
“How'd you do it? How'd you get your Dad to let you go?” Ric asked in disbelief.
“I didn't, Chris talked him into it.” He replied sheepishly.
“Dude, your roomate is hella cool.” Ric replied.
“Yeah, putting his neck out on the line for you. Isn't it taboo to challenge the alpha?” Jack added.
“Well, he kinda has a bit of leverage. We really need him right now.” He quietly replied.
“Right, cause ya'll have been short on food, yeah?” Dave said.
Danny nodded, “Really short. Dad's been cutting our portions in half to keep omegas feed.”
Dave sucked in a breath, “Yikes, bro.”
“Why don't you guys just go buy meat from the store?” Ric asked.
“The stuff at the store is aged. It's tough on our systems. Getting raw meat outside the territory is a bitch. FDA regulations and all that shit.” He explained.
“Damn, didn't know that.” Ric muttered.
“Yeah, so that's why we need him. Like I told you guys before, Chris is a kick ass hunter. He's from this crazy cultish pack from Alaska. They're known for being the best. So we should be doing pretty good soon.”
“Well damn, why'd he leave if it's so good up there?” Jack asked.
“He's gay. They were gonna kill him for it.” He shrugged to play it off cool.
“What the fuck?” Ric stuttered.
“Kill him just cause he's gay? Fuckin' brutal ass bullshit.” Jack grimaced.
Dave grunted in agreement.
“And you're okay living with him?,” Ric blurted, “He could make a pass at you.”
“Shut it, dickweed,” Dave snapped, “Not every gay guy is a disrespectful horn dog. Get outta here with your insecure ass.”
“Oh right, I keep forgetting you have a rainbow tinged cousin.” Ric mumbled as he rolled his eyes.
Jack's mouth made an ‘o’ shape as his eyes widened with glee.
“Oooooh, someone's about to get fucked up.” Jack squealed.
“I'm gonna beat the phobia right out ya ass, fuckin' wonton!” Dave said aggressively.
“Shit!” Ric's face lit up in fear.
He hoped from the door frame. Dave was after him like lightening. Jack was cackling with delight, which had him laughing too. When Ric's howls of surrender echoed from the other room, Jack nearly fell off the counter in a fit of giggles.
“Oh, that is so rich.” Jack said through a couple breaths, supporting himself on the back of a chair.
“He does it to himself everytime.” Danny chuckled.
“When will he learn you don't fuck with a defensive lineman?” Jack breathed out in amusement.
“Dunno, but his track legs never get him very far.”
“Pfft, Dave is speed and impact. Ric is slow and steady.” He sniggered.
“True.”
Jack grabbed his glass and handed it to him before he grabbed a liter of soda to pour his own drink.
“Seriously Dan, I wonna hear how it goes. Action or not. I think it's wicked.” He stated.
He smiled at him when he turned around.
“You'll hear about it, trust me.” Danny said as he returned a smile.
Jack nodded his head in the direction of the living room.
“Common, let's see if Dave fucked up his mouse arm again.” He smirked.
Sipping at his water, he followed after him.
For the first time the guys didn't whine and complain when he had to leave early. He sent away with well wishes in the form of punches to the shoulder and lung clearing slaps on the back.
As he drove home, he couldn't get his heart to stop racing. Excitement and nervousness filled him.
Never having been on a hunt, he felt overwhelmed by the unknown. What could he expect? Would he mesh well? Would his instincts kick in? What if he made a detrimental mistake?
But just knowing he'd finally be able to help out and support the pack made him feel like he was a real wolf. He wouldn't be a pup anymore. He wouldn't be a burden. He'd be on his way to leading. He was going to be a true Alpha.
The only thing that slightly settled his nervousness was Chris.
He would be there to guide him. Just like he did on rounds this morning. He was a good teacher. Not once did he make him feel insecure about his lack of knowledge. He liked that he let him ask all the questions he had. Chris gave him the feeling of value and purpose
He wouldn't be thrown completely into the deep end tomorrow.
As it had everyday this week, Chris's scent smacked him in the face the moment he opened the front door. It was slowly becoming less traumatic. He was finding it was turning into something comforting instead of intimidating. Treading as lightly as possible, he made his way to his room.
Being sure to set two alarms, just in case, he settled under the covers. Taking several deep, slow breaths, he tried to clear his mind. He needed it empty so he could get some rest.
