LED lights flash and flicker
Ever bright and oh so painful
Why must you shine so brightly so
When all I need are the stars
A glittering backdrop in the endless sky
Muted by the smoke and smog
Drowned out by the city lights
Where oh where have you gone
Snow falls gently to the ground
Blanketing the earth in a layer of ice
The moon shines off its powdery veneer
And it's gotten in my boots
Trudging through the city shops
Songs blare through every speaker
I've heard every jingle twice over and more
And would like to strangle them all
And the clamor and chatter of people and crowds
Pounds in my ears and ices my veins
I hurry homeward in a flurry of panic
Eager for the quiet and a crackling fire
As for bows and tinsel and wrapping galore
I have no need for your rattling boxes
Only your welcoming and warm embrace
And the soft atmosphere of home.
