“You both will be serving a three-hour detention on Saturday. I am disappointed in you both for causing such an uproar on school property. I am especially disappointed in you Pinny.” She said, her voice lowering octaves ever so slowly.
Pinny gave me a hate-filled stare before turning back towards the Mrs.Tradley. His bottom lip quivered, he looked like he was going to cry and really soon. She lowered her gaze towards me.
“You mother said she wanted to pick you up from school early. I hope you understand that if you skip this detention like last time, it will double. Got it?” Her voice was stern, she had a very small tolerance for me. I had been in her office 4 times within the first 3 months of being in this school, having moved here at the beginning of the year. I nodded and quickly gained the little pride I had and said,
“Why? Gonna miss me, Kate?” I said, yet every fiber in my body to me that was a really bad idea.
She scowled, got up out of her chair and looked at me with a glare that seemed motherly.
“You need to quit calling me by my first name Liam Staunt. Or so help me I will heighten the chance of you having 5 hours of detention or even more if you keep pestering me.” She said pointing at me before sitting back down.
I heard Church Boy snicker. I turned towards him, as did Kate.
“Sorry. It’s just a funny last name.” He said quietly, avoiding my gaze.
“Got a problem with it?!” I said, completely ignoring the teacher in front of us.
“NO. But since you thought it was funny on the bus to make fun of my name, I thought I returned the favor.” He said shrugging, smirking slightly.
Kate snapped right as I was going to say something.
“Enough, both of you! Pinny, I am very surprised you would say or do something as rude and insulting as what you did on the bus.”
Pin-Church Boy sunk in his seat, I just looked at her, as if testing her.
She sighed loudly. “Pinny say sorry to Liam. Liam say sorry to Pinny and lets put this whole thing behind us. Ok?” She asked, looking at us exasperatedly.
“Sorry.” We said in unison, not looking up at each other.
“Pinny go to class and stop by the nurse’s office to pick up an ice pack for your eye. Liam go get one too for that lip then come back to my office to wait for you mother.”
The silence between us was killing, almost deafening. The talking from the other classrooms made the quiet obvious that it had very little to hide. The fact that we were just yelling at eachother an hour ago but everything in an awkward veiw. Once we got to the nurses office, finally, he smiled like no other, it was easy to tell it was fake but it must have tricked her because she gladly gave his an icepack and sent him on his way. I pushed his sholder as she called my name, talling me it was okay to come in now. She gave me an icepack, scolded me for bumping into him, and sent me on my way. I was tired and really wanted to go home and just sleep this day off.
