Meanwhile, Mellisa had her wagon packed with a few of her lemonade gear while the stand was tied to a string and standing on a roller. The girl grabbed the handle of the wagon and pulled, proceeding to find a new block to restart her work. She pulled and pulled with the only strain of minor holes in the sidewalk. Julianna had tagged along, not wanting to see her bestie all by lonesome, pushing the stand across until they find a more easygoing block. It's not as crowded as where Mellisa lives, but it is pretty lively, mostly because of families coming over from other states. Mellisa & Julianna find a nice block near the neighborhood park and set up shop there. Julianna stopped to take a look at this area, and slightly recognized it.
"Hey. Isn't this where that sleazy Yerdman kid lives?" Julianna questioned.
"Oh bestie," Mellisa giggled, "You always have a grudge with someone."
"Hey, the guy tried to get up in arms and-and uhhh... Assault me," Julianna tried explaining, "Of course I'm gonna hold a grudge against him."
"More like he has a crush on you," Mellisa teased, "And you like him tooooooooo~," Julianna began to blush in embarrassment and tries to call Mellisa off but to no avail.
"Stooppp...." Julianna begged. Luckily for Julianna, a man came by asking for some lemonade. Mellisa poured some out as he poured a cup out for him. The man drank the lemonade then asked for another cup, and another, and another, and another.
"Hey! We're a limited supply business, not a charity, guy," Julianna stated. Mellisa was more compassionate, but the man had already begun to pay for the refills he drank and said, "I-I'm sorry. I'm just bad at managing money. Here. Here's the money for the refills." Julianna took the money and placed it all in the jar as the man walked away. The other residents on the block passed by, even while Mellisa tried kind persuasion to get them to buy.
"Mellisa. You can't just go attempting to persistently persuade folks to buy lemonade," Julianna stated, "We live in a big neighborhood so whoever wants to buy some lemonade will buy some lemonade." Mellisa slowly nods then sits back down quietly but still cracked a jolly smile on her face and looked at Julianna, making her smile as well.
"Besides," the plump girl continued, "It's not like "Barry-BLAND" has a way of traveling across the neighborhood or anything. Heh heh heh." As Julianna chuckled, a beat could be heard vibrating the ground. Mellisa, Julianna, and any resident on the block turned to listen to what the noise was. As the noise grew louder, it turned into beats, which then turned to van noises, which then turned into music. Mellisa gasped as she recognized what it was and saw that it was Karry-Ann, and her grandmother Sarah-Belle driving a minivan retooled as a makeshift ice cream truck painted in white, polka-dots, and cartoon characters. The music was so whimsical that it attracted a ton of kids out of their houses and form a line at the side of the truck. Both besties watched one-by-one as the kids bought their own cup of lemonade from their competitors. Julianna groaned, stood up, got in line, and waited her turn to buy some lemonade. When she got up there, she noticed that Karry-Ann was serving and said, "Oh great. It's you."
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Moe and Curly of the Three Stooges," Karry-Ann insulted, "And I bet you and Curly were trying to sell lemonade too, huh?"
"Hah hah, you're funny. In fact, we were here first, so get off our block before the lemonade contest judges show up," Julianna retorted, however, Julianna's retort only made Karry-Ann laugh while her grandmother looks over and scoffs at Mellisa's lemonade stand.
"That rinky-dink scrap of wood is only something Josephine would make," Sarah-Belle commented, "I should have known she would have her grandmother try to conjure plans to overhaul my business."
"Business?" Julianna questioned in disbelief.
"Yeah, you heard me girly," Sarah-Belle stated, "I've been doing business in this neighborhood for ten stinkin' years, and I ain't gonna have not skimpy-outfit wearing little girl, an old hag, or a fat emo whippersnapper get in my ways. Especially with my special granddaughter overlooking the summer deals. So pack your bags and git, or I'll make yous git!" Julianna said no words but had an angry expression, before she left, she saw a hatch inside the van open, showing the lemonade process being made. Something was off though, as she saw the word "artificial" and the letter "L" on a mysterious black case. Julianna raised her eyebrows up as she couldn't believe what she was seeing up until Sarah-Belle suddenly covered it and said, "Go on. I'm running a business here, and you're blocking all my other customers. One child behind Julianna said, "Yeeaaahhh~." While the other kids behind them agreed. Julianna brushed her hair down and walked away frustrated. Mellisa looked at Julianna and asked if she was alright. Julianna replied sarcastically, "Oh yeeaahhhh, and there's even tiny fairies floating out of my shirt." Mellisa's naivety and curiosity gets the best of her as she tries to lift Julianna's shirt to find the fairies. Julianna's face immediately go red as she grabs Mellisa's arms trying to stop her.
"I don't really have fairies, moron! I-I being sarcastic," Julianna informed.
"Ooohhhhhhhhh. I sometimes forget that," Mellisa giggled for a little, but she got worried again, "But what are we going to do now, bestie? Barry has us trampled." A paper cup is suddenly bounced off of Mellisa's hair as Karry-Ann yells, "It's Karry-Ann!" Julianna saw how unfazed Mellisa was as the cheery girl continues talking, "How are we going to best her before the judges come?" Julianna puts one arm on Mellisa's shoulder as she comes up with a plan.
"Mellisa. You're not someone who's gonna give up right?" Julianna asked, making Mellisa shake her head, "Then we do what she doesn't do. We travel to different areas of the neighborhood that she HASN'T gone to yet. And maybe. JUST maybe. We head on over to the local park and set up there." Mellisa agrees but then realizes something off and replied, "But bestie, are you sure we'll be fast enough in our wagon?"
"Oh don't worry. I've just got the plan for that," Julianna replied with a smirk. And just like that, Mellisa and Julianna made their own traveling lemonade transport using Mellisa's wagon as they travelled all of the areas that Karry-Ann and Sarah-Belle haven't taken while trying not to run into their van in the process. The process took almost all day, and the Besties have only had a few near misses with Karry-Ann. Joyfully for them, mostly Julianna, seeing Karry-Ann throw a tantrum when she found that the customers on each other block have received them. At one point, Mellisa and Jukianna were sneaking away, but Mellisa accidentally trips and makes a small sound. She quickly covers her mouth as she hides JUST before Karry-Ann looked in the direction that they were in. She grinded her teeth and told her grandmother, "I think those two are getting in the way of our sales, grammaw. Sooner or later they're gonna take over our business." Sarah-Belle only grabbed Karry-Ann's cheek and wiggled it around and replied, "You're just like your mother. But hush up child, we don't need to worry. All we have gotta do is amp up our juice." Karry-Ann looked at her grandmother in confusion, and Sarah-Belle simply walked over and unsheathed a blanket, revealing the true reason to why her grandmother's lemonade tastes super sweet. Karry-Ann gasped in surprise at first and asked, "Is this even legal?"
"Legal, meh. Hypocritical? Well, if you wanna say bye bye to our business. I've been trying to get Artificial Lemons to be legalized in this town for YEARS, but that fool mayor never gave 'Em a chance 'cause he deemed them quote-unquote too immoral to our town of harvests," Sarah-Belle stated, "A politician like him don't know the meaning of true money-making. But I do. You mustn't tell a soul, ya hear?" Karry-Ann bowed and obeyed, then took an apple she had in the van's mini-fridge and ate some of it.
Meanwhile, Mellisa and Julianna travel all the way to the park and set up shop for the day.
"Ok, it's getting late, and I'm getting bored," Julianna started, "Let's have this be the last stop for the day alright?"
"But bestie, what about the judges?" Mellisa asked. Before Julianna could answer, a yell could be heard from the distance behind them. The besties turn around and see an orange-haired on girl land onto the grass, bouncing a few times.
"Hi Sonia!" Mellisa yelled happily, seeing one of her friends. Sonia jolted up in shock, hoping that her powers disappeared. She pats herself off and hides her amulet in her shirt and then awkwardly waves at Mellisa and Julianna. Julianna began to question why Sonia was all beaten up, but decided to leave it alone. But that didn't stop Mellisa from asking, "Sonia, whyhaps are you so dirty?"
"O-oh! Uhh.. You see I was doing a job walking some dogs, and there was this skateboard an-an-and I tripped and fell and flew off a construction board aaaaannnd this happened. Hehhhhh," Sonia lied, not wanting to blow her demon-hunting cover. Mellisa believed her and Julianna did after processing Sonia's tall tale. Julianna then asked if Sonia wants to buy some lemonade, and Sonia awkwardly took the offer. She then asked the two, "So what are you two doing out here in the middle of the day? Don't you both usually go do what best friends do?"
"That's every day, Sonia," Mellisa giggled, "But we're actually selling lemonade to help my grandma and win a contest."
"You mean the lemonade contest?" Sonia asked.
"Yeah. How do you know about it?" Julianna queried.
"I got the flyer in the mail today. Besides, the judges only choose which of our neighborhoods to visit on the first day." Sonia answered.
"Did you enter?" Mellisa asked Sonia.
"Nahhh, I was busy with.... work. But they're going to the Applegate neighborhood tomorrow." Sonia replied, trying to keep her secret.
"That's where bestie and I live!" Mellisa exclaimed.
"Ohhh, thank god!" Julianna yells as she leans back on her chair and falls to the ground, making Sonia and Mellisa look at her in wonder. Mellisa then look at Sonia and thanked her for telling them. Sonia would have stuck around, but she then saw a signal from both Matthew and Scruffles that there's trouble afoot. The ginger pats Mellisa's shoulder as she ran off to her pets as Mellisa waves goodbye to her. Mellisa then looks at Julianna, who's still on the floor, and says while poking Julianna's nose with her nose, "Did you hear that, bestie? We have tomorrow to win over the judges."
"Yeah yeah yeah," Julianna replied with a yawn, "Now let me sleep." Mellisa obeyed with a smile and took her stuff and carried them home. Julianna on the other hand, opened her eyes wide when she saw Mellisa carrying the stuff away, leaving Julianna in the grass.
"Hey!" Julianna yelled as she began to chase and catch up to Mellisa, "Don't leave me out here!"
