On the next day, both Mellisa and her grandmother spent the morning building their very own lemonade stand. They had to make sure that it was not only sturdy and well-kept, but also inviting and kindly. The lemonade stand was embedded in floral print on an aquamarine setting. It's patterns and frame were made out of an old Victorian bed that was shelved years ago, and its scent was that of old wood that was coated in air freshener but without any of the mold. It was eleven o'clock, which was enough time for the two to set up the lemonade stand, have a big batch of lemonade, an assortment of disposable cups, and a small garbage pail to place those disposable cups. Meanwhile, on the house at the corner of the neighborhood block, not where the demon-slaying teenage girl lives but three blocks away. It's a house that has paint chippings, a semi-burned/semi-green lawn, a Doberman Pinscher guarding the yard, and an array of lawn gnomes scattered across the garden. If you listen closely, you can hear muffled shouting. Along with the muffled shouting, a door slams open by a swift kick and Julianna, without her black sweater and hat to hide her chubby body storms out while the mother yells at her.
"AND YOU'D BETTER COME BACK BY THREE-FIFTEEN WITH A BETTER ATTITUDE, YOUNG LADY!" Yelled the mother.
"THAT'S FINE! I DIDN'T WANNA GO TO THE MOVIES ANYWAY!" Julianna retorted. The angry girl stormed off to take a walk in the neighborhood and cool down. Her Doberman runs to her and almost tackles her down, making her yelp, "Ah! Down Lucas, down!" After getting tackled by her dog, Julianna finally gets to go back for her walk. Julianna almost never goes out for a walk without her usual attire. She says the reveal makes her feel exposed, very self-conscious, and a bit weak in the knees. However, if she's walking out early in the morning without it, she feels safe. Julianna walked four blocks past a dark mansion, ten blocks through the neighborhood park, waits for a few cars to get out of the neighborhood, does a little stretch break, and walks a few blocks past her neighbor's house then turns the corner. Meanwhile, Mellisa and her bestie have all of their items and lemonade set up for the contest.
"Ok Melly-dear," Josephine started, "Before we sell this lemonade to the public, we need a test buyer."
"A what?"
"Someone who is willing to try our lemonade for free."
"OOOOoooohhhhh," Mellisa replied. She looked around and saw Julianna walking by, immediately recognized her, and tackled her down yelling, "Bestie, bestie, bestie!" Julianna blushed mega-red in embarrassment that Mellisa was the one person she honestly did not expect to run into this morning. Julianna couldn't move because of Mellisa's sort-of "love grip" on her chubby body. Josephine sat by the stand and giggled as she saw her granddaughter's affection towards her special friend. She then asked Mellisa, "Melly. Before you make your best friend explode in love, why not ask her if she wants to try our lemonade?" Mellisa perks up and helps Julianna up off the floor. She then happily asks if the big girl wants to try her lemonade. Julianna slightly hesitates and disagrees at first, but she did feel parched from walking around over the course of the morning, so Julianna took a glass, poured herself a cup of lemonade and gave it a try. That one taste made Julianna feel as she morphed into a rocket, flew into space, and exploded into glorious fireworks. Julianna looked at both Mellisa and Josephine in excitement, rummaged through her pocket and pulled out as much money, which was about twenty-five dollars, as she could grab and asked to buy some more lemonade.
"It looks like your friend really enjoys the lemonade," Josephine commented, "It looks like we're going to need another batch. Here, Melly. Why don't you and bestie man the stand, while I go make a second batch of my fabulous lemonade." Granny Josephine walked back into the house and closed the door behind her as she made herself some lemonade. Time passes, and Mellisa and Julianna man the lemonade stand together while Julianna has her second cup of lemonade that she willingly paid for. There weren't many folks walking around the neighborhood except the occasional worker like the milkman or the neighborhood cleanup crew. When a few of the workers were sweltering from the heat, they took notice to the lemonade stand, came over and bought themselves a cup or two of lemonade. From their first few sips, they instantly fell in love with the drink.
"Wowzers! Did you make this batch yourself?" Asked the milkman.
"Well, I had a bit of help from my grandma," Mellisa said, "Well actually she's the real maker of this batch. I was happy to help."
"Well tell your grandmother that you and her did a fantastic job with this lemonade," the milkman commented, "It's so good that it should be sold in stores!" The milkman properly disposed of the cup of lemonade, says his goodbyes and goes back in his truck and continues his milk delivery. Julianna looked at Mellisa and commented, "So what's this lemonade stand for? Trying to do more charity for the public?"
"Mm, not much after I donated a liver last month," Mellisa replied.
"Oh yeah. You were out of it for weeks after that," Julianna laughed, "The doctor DID say you were going to experience a period of both nausea and subjective memory loss."
"The doctor said that? I don't remember that being a symptom."
"Exactly," Julianna chuckled, "Heh heh, blockhead." Mellisa closed her eyes and shot her tongue out at Julianna then giggles.
It was now noon, and the neighborhood kids were coming out of their homes to play outside. Much of them were middle school kids, while others were some kindergarteners, preschoolers, and a few teens casually relaxing in the cul-de-sac. It looked like smooth sailing for Mellisa and Julianna's lemonade stand as they not only had enough customers, they also had good business as well, making about thirty-eight dollars in about an hour. This cheery moment would nearly be squandered when a girl, who is as tall as a seventh grader, has scarlet eyes, has brunette pigtails as a hairstyle, wore a crimson red dress, and had a glare that intimidated a lot of kids who dared to come near her, came next in line at the besties' lemonade stand.
"Hello there, little girl," Mellisa began in her cheery nature while handing her a cup, "Would you like to try some lemonade today?" The crimson-dressed girl looked at Mellisa with a raised eyebrow and then began to laugh. Julianna looked at this girl in a slight mix of confusion and anger. The girl laughed for nearly a minute, then finally regained her composure and cleared her throat.
"Clearly, you do not understand why I'm here. I don't TRY lemonade. I observe the place of business," the girl stated.
"Oh, are you a part of the lemonade contest committee?" Mellisa asked. The question only made the crimson-dressed girl laugh more.
"What's so funny?" Julianna retorted.
"If I was a part of the lemonade committee, I would have already given you both a failing grade on your presentation AND your lemonade without even having to try it," the girl replied.
"Then you must be off your blocker 'cause Mellisa and her grandma make the best lemonade in this town."
"Oh! And it's going to be at this year's town fair," Mellisa giggled.
"HAH! My lemonade is going to be top billing at this year's contest AND the county fair, and there's nothing you and your rinky-dink lemonade is going to do about it."
"What makes you think a little kid like you is gonna beat a tall teenage girl and grandmother?" Julianna started, "We're gonna wipe the floor with our lemonade while yours will be left down the sewers that not even a group of ninja turtles could even want." Mellisa, who didn't want to start a fight of any sort, simply offered the crimson-dressed girl to try some of her lemonade. The girl then backhanded the lemonade out of Mellisa's hand, making both Mellisa and Julianna gasp. The girl then stated, "Karry-Ann takes lemonade from NO POSER. I will win that contest if it's the last thing I do." The girl then lifted her chest and walked away from the duo as if she had sudden selfish pride.
"Ooohhhhhhh, I don't like her one bit..." Julianna spoke a little harsh. However, Mellisa was taking it a little indifferent. She wasn't upset, but she was a little indifferent, asking her bestie, "Is our lemonade bad?" Julianna looked at Mellisa in shock and retorted, "Mellisa. Are you really gonna let ONE person try to bring down your spirit in lemonade? You and your granny worked hard on that lemonade, and there's nothing she can do to make you think otherwi-." A sudden noise interrupted Julianna as she was reassuring Mellisa. The noise happened to be a minivan unloading a giant stand covered in a cloth right across from Mellisa and Julianna. The two besties glanced at each other and then back at the covered stand. They then saw Karry-Ann walk over to the stand as the car drove off and unsheathed the cloth to reveal a highly advanced, superstar-decorated, spontaneously ecstatic lemonade stand. This lemonade stand looked as if it was something that only celebrities could own, overshadowing the adorable and calm nature of Mellisa and Julianna's stand.
"This is gonna be trouble, and I'm born to withstand trouble," Julianna spoke aside.
It was twelve-thirty, and the customer traffic was firing up. Many families that lived on Mellisa's block were entranced by Karry-Ann's spectacular light show of a lemonade stand, overshadowing Mellisa and Julianna with each passing family member. A small amount of family members did come to Mellisa's stand. However, it wasn't enough to boost her sales. Having had enough of this malarky, Julianna decided that it's best if she and Mellisa move their lemonade stand to another location. Mellisa agreed, then went inside to tell her grandmother about it.
"Why would you wanna do sumthin' like that? Isn't where we live the most populated part of the neighborhood?" Josephine queried.
"I knooooww..." Mellisa whined, "But the problem is that...... Uummmmm..." Julianna came in and finished Mellisa's thought, "We've got this snarky little girl in a red dress taking up all our customers." Granny Josephine took in what the two teen girls had said, and began to laugh. Mellisa and Julianna laughed awkwardly as they looked at the jolly old senior.
"Girls, c'mon now," Josephine started, "It's a little girl. There's no way she could overshadow you two." To prove the old woman wrong, Julianna then proceeds to open the window curtain and show her Karry-Ann taking up all the customers. Josephine's mouth dropped at the sight of what's going on, then closed it, got steamed, and began to growl. Mellisa asked Josephine is she is ok, and she replied, "I know that little brat. That's the granddaughter of my arch-nemesis." Josephine looks deeper through the window and saw an old woman with purple and gray hair, wearing a red floral dress and a sun-hat, sitting with Karry-Ann as they sell loads of lemonade.
"Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhh, that Sarah-Belle. She's always trying to sneak up on my success EVERYTIME."
"Who's Sarah-Belle, gran-gran?"
"Jocelyn is my old rival back in grade school AND private school. She and I used to be pals back in the day, being winners in almost any competition we were good at. However, the minute she found out that I'm winning more competitions than her, she ALWAYS began to rival me, even to finding ways to beat me at my own game," Josephine spoke as her flashback ended, "And now I'd bet she's talked about me to her little grand-offspring, and is gonna make sure that you get bested in this lemonade competition AND the town fair. Mellisa gasped, "Oh noes! But we need that oven for our house!" Mellisa gets poked in the nose by Granny Josephine's cane as the elder states, "This time it's not about the oven. It's about PROTECTING YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S DIGNITY. ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?" Mellisa gives her grandmother a soldier's salute and then heads outside, grabs her wagon, goes to the stand and loads up to find a new locale. Julianna looks at Josephine and asks, "So uuhhhh... You ever done boxing?"
