Tapas Quick Reviews:
OUTCAST Comics – Erma – 10/10 – Ongoing, posts often.
What if the girl from the ring married and had a kid? It’s the kid’s story and it’s absolutely wholesome and precious. Good style and character arc. Mix of strips, splashes, and full narrative.
Reader Tip: Awws and dawws. I enjoy all the horror icons turned cute.
DarkBox – Silent Horror – 7/10 – Ongoing, posts whenever.
Techniques of how to make a silent film genre into a comic. Visuals are creepy and reminiscent of old Japanese horror mangas. Mature and deadly. I hope you like sex and gore, there’s a decent amount.
Reader Tip: Read when updated, understand the short film style being used.
Samantha Whitten – Strays – 8.5/10 – Ended, iffy closing.
People who can transform into animals go on mercenary adventures and discover their hidden pasts. Female lead. Good, long read. Has print editions. Carries a great character arc, sometimes shallow character design.
Reader Tip: Have fun but read slowly. This loose ending might upset people.
Nero – Executioner’s Academy – 8/10 – Ongoing, posts range from 6 to 10 days.
A narcissistic, executioner’s son journeys to change his class status to become a noble. Grand art style, think Gorillaz meets Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and fairly accurate interpretations of medieval times. Most of the writing up to this point is set-up. Stay tuned for something good!
Reader Tip: Bad people in a mad world. Forecast calls for bloodshed. I hope.
Gabbi – Victubia – 7/10 – Ongoing, posts whenever on Tuesdays.
Victorian era Youtubers in a magic filled world. Consistent art style featuring characters like Cry, Pewds, and other Youtubers in a grander conflict that keeps building to something. A little slow in pacing, but accurate portrayals of characters to their real-life counterparts.
Reader Tip: Give it some time and eventually you’ll see someone you recognize.
Gcmulk – Larkspur – 7/10 – Ongoing, updates every Monday.
Post-nuclear, but not post-apocalypse, event that takes the gang style and mixes it with slightly mutated people. Female lead. Good character development and subtle relationships, everything feels natural. I want the post-nuclear thing to affect more, but that’s my opinion.
Reader Tip: Main character’s a quick typhoon that takes control. Prepare for strong character archetypes.
Luminaries – Luminaries – 6.5/10 (Maybe 8/10) – Ongoing, updates every Wednesday.
A space adventure with cryptic ideas. Light read, easy graphics and type-face. Slightly awkward or slow pacing. Female lead.
Jaxy’s Complaint: I wish the Big Bad would be here already. More conflict please?
Reader Tip: Enjoy strong space visuals, a bright and gullible main character, and some exposition splashed in between the stories.
Three Small Timers – Below 300 subscribers as of writing the review.
Blitsai Bundles – Blitsai Bundles – Hasn’t updated in a while…
Two best friends and apartment shenanigans. Personal friends of mine. Artist has great skills and her own art page. Consists of short mini-comics of everyday life. Wish there were more or at least a better following.
Artist Tip: Consistent posts when you can?
Reader Tip: Enjoy the humor and the style.
Unofficial Rating: 5.5/10 – Needs more.
Jax’s note: Sorry for that last one guys. I try to maintain a sense of disconnect when it comes to the 7 major reviews. This one is a personal one that I want to see grow because of friends.
Crowsmile – Anxiety – Started in July, updates whenever.
A girl dealing with anxiety. There’s not much to this one yet, but, by the nature of the story, I hope to see more out of it later on. Has a nice approach on storytelling in the images. It didn’t just drop exposition in the beginning.
Artist Tip: Keep it up.
Reader Tip: Keep it up?
Unofficial Rating: 7/10 – Tits? Mature warning?
Fleeting Infinity – Cowan’s Crux – Updates two pages every Saturday.
Drops exposition in the about section for the comic. Starts with another character. Has an interesting concept that hasn’t been shown in the comics yet. Needs to spend a little more time lettering.
Artist Tip: Reader other comics and find a style that would benefit your story. I’d recommend Academy. Lead in with an instance of his ability without explaining it and then get to the hospital.
Reader Tip: Marked horror, looks to be going that direction. I hope the artist doesn’t go trope heavy. We’ll just have to see.
Unofficial Rating: 3/10 – Don’t dump exposition in your description or tell the audience what they can’t see.
