At the station, the police fingerprinted her, recorded her story, and had her provide an alibi. Luckily, Kyra knew quite a few people at the party that had seen her there and had talked to her not long before she left. She also let the police know that there was a camera near the house where the party was at that would show her arriving around 6pm and not leaving until 9:30 pm. She thought that it was pretty weird that she had to provide an alibi. Was she a suspect? As she waited to be released, she saw detective Conway.
“Detective Conway?” she asked. “Is there a reason that I’m having to provide and alibi like I’m a suspect?”
He looked surprised. “Oh, I thought you knew.” She frowned. “Knew what?”
“Since your fingerprints are on some of our evidence we have to have proof that you were elsewhere during the time of the incident.”
“How do you know when the incident took place?”
“Well, based on what time the dumpster was emptied earlier and how long it would have taken to lose that much blood, we put the time of attack around 9:30pm.”
“Couldn’t the attack have happened someplace else?”
“Based on the amount of blood at the scene, we think the attack happened there. It looks like the victim was attacked in the alley right where the dumpster was. The attacker dumped him in the dumpster and then moved it in front of the blood spatter so that the blood was less visible.”
“I’m surprised that I didn’t hear anything as I neared the alleyway. Wouldn’t the victim have made some kind of noise, like a scream, from such a brutal attack?”
“We don’t know why yet. It’s possible that the victim was knocked unconscious first. The wound is very strange though.”
“What do you mean?”
“It looks like the victim was bitten, but we won’t know for a while. We should probably be getting you home anyways. Do you have someone who can come get you or do you need someone here to give you a ride?”
“Can I borrow a phone?”
“There’s one on the wall over there. I’ll wait with you until they get here.”
Kyra called her boyfriend, Kyle, and asked him to come pick her up and take her home. He quickly obliged. The whole way home he tried to grill about what happened, but Kyra wasn’t ready to discuss it. Kyle asked her if she wanted him to stay with her for a bit and make sure that she was fine, but Kyra told him to just drop her off so he could go home and get some sleep. Kyle worked long shifts and had to be in bed before midnight so he wouldn’t be too tired for work. His boss would be ticked if he showed up at work exhausted, even if he had a really good excuse. It was also pretty important that an ER nurse was alert at work.
