“Hello, 911?” Luckily there had been a corner store close by and they had let her use their phone. The cashier hadn’t seemed to believe her but didn’t seem to care enough to stop her from calling 911. “what is your emergency?” “there is a guy bleeding out in the dumpster behind Hillbora Apartments.” They told her to wait by the entrance to the alleyway until the police and ambulance arrived. She hoped they hurried. As she waited, she noticed just how cold it was. It was October after all and she hadn’t expected to have to walk home. She did wonder though how much of the chill was from the cold and how much of it was her being creeped out.
The ambulance and police finally arrived and when the EMT’s saw her they wrapped her up in a warm blanket and had her sit down. “How did you know that I was cold?” she asked. The cute young EMT winked at her and said it was standard procedure. “A lot of the people that come upon scenes like this go into a little bit of shock so we warm them up and make sure that they’re doing alright.” Kyra blushed. “I suppose so.”
In the meantime, the police had checked out the alleyway and made sure that it was clear. They opened the dumpster and felt for a pulse on the man inside. “Medics!” they called, “He’s still alive.” Kyra was surprised, how could he still be alive with all the blood loss? The EMT’s and police pulled him out of the dumpster. Once out, Kyra could see that the bleeding was slow and sluggish. They loaded him onto the stretched and placed an IV catheter into his hand so that they could start fluids on the way to the hospital. “Bolus at least 2 liters as fast as you can”. She figured that he would need a couple blood transfusions to survive, but getting IV fluids would certainly help. The police were taking pictures of the whole alleyway and taking notes of everything that they saw. One of the detectives came over to speak to her.
