The VIP waiting room was certainly much quieter than the outside area, and Luan found a place to sit down. He was staring at the bulbs that flickered on the ceiling with a bored expression and started to yawn, when he heard a nearby man say in a low voice: “Have you decided when you cross heavens?”
Cross heavens? Luan leaned to the side and slowly shifted his gaze towards the speaker. He had been confused most of the day, but this time, he finally heard words he could understand. He saw a man, clad from head to toe in black attire, and answered in an equally low voice: “I submitted my application last month and I’m waiting for approval.”
Unexpectedly, the other man was dressed completely in white. He nodded: “You must be careful. Do your best to select the right place and time. The ones chosen last year almost caused a disaster! Really, we must speed up the progress and use all our determination to make the city with the largest population cross heavens! Hee-hee, as a result, when the great evening of lightning and thunder comes, hundreds of people will a strange thing flying across the sky. That’s more like it! The fairy committee needed over half a year to clean the mess – I heard they haven’t cleaned up yet.”
The man in black clicked his tongue: "He brought the plan to fruition, but implicated our involvement behind the scenes. Oh, you may not know it, but he comes from a great family. I heard that…”
In mid-sentence, both men sensed that Luan was eavesdropping on them and quickly stopped their conversation to play with the toys in their hands. Luan was interested by what he heard and really wanted to ask a few questions, as he had just arrived in the human world and there were many things he didn’t understand. However, he was not a naive child either. He instinctively kept his lips tight, resisting the desire to gossip.
Anyway, with his interest aroused, he began to feel uneasy when he couldn’t ask the questions he had. Luan was at a loss, but he watched as a uniformed attendant lady quickly walked by and approached a man who was sitting on the opposite bench with a polite smile: “Mr. Mo, your coffee and the transfer ticket are here. Is there anything else that you need?”
The man lifted his head and nodded elegantly. He opened his mouth, smiled and replied in a clear and gentle voice: “That would be all.”
The waitress instantly blushed and nervously started to twist a silk handkerchief wrapped around her wrist as she quickly walked away on her high heeled shoes. The man pressed the fingers of his right hand between his eyebrows and raised his left hand to draw circles in the air. He continued until a bright ring formed and floated in the air. Soon, a silhouette of a man appeared within the halo.
Is this a teleportation spell? Luan’s attention was instantly absorbed, and he started to watch Mr. Mo closely. In fact, back in the mountains, Dragon Ying and Zhu Yin would sometimes draw magic runes. But this strange magic of the human world was cast directly, and Luan saw it for the first time.
“Mr. Mo” paid no attention to Luan. Pressing his temple again, he gently spoke to the person within the halo: "I booked the air ticket, but I had to change the reservation again. Make sure you notice the ministry of finances, we have to slash the debt first. Also, tell my secretary to send a copy of my permanent residence to Boshlake City. Btw, how are you nowadays?”
His left hand was still drawing a circle in midair, but he picked a card with his right hand and gestured the man within the halo. Luan seized this fleeting moment to have a good look at the card, and managed to spot the word “Panda” written on the left side, and the word “Mobai” on the right. The other content remained unclear.
The shadow in the halo replied: "The fairy management committee doesn’t want to manage this affair. Of the three reports that were sent, two were rejected and the third is being processed now.”
The shadow in the halo was facing away from Luan, who could only see his grey, well fitted clothes. Mobai was equally interesting. Judging from his tone alone, you’d think him a bit boring, but when you looked at his face you would discover that his eyes and lips had a perpetual smile to them. He seemed amiable and good-natured, and you couldn’t help but wish to become friends with him.
Mobai gently shook his head as if he tried to get rid of all these annoying things, and replied with an amiable laugh: "Forget about it, let’s not deal with it for now. I’ll deal with it when I’m back from my trip.”
The man in the halo stayed silent for a while, and said: “Minister, I think we shouldn’t be taking this case. If fairies can’t handle it, we can help them. But we shouldn’t be treated by them like some subordinates…”
Smiling, Mobai raised his right hand in the air and made a reassuring motion, reassuring the man: "Rest assured that everything is in norm. You were really busy the past few days, so take a day off – on full pay.”
The other man didn’t respond but went back to his affairs. Mobai didn’t continue this conversation either. He just said “Thank you” and waved his left hand. The halo slowly disappeared.
So that was not a teleportation spell, but one that allowed communication over thousands of miles. Just as Little David had said, could it be even more powerful than the teleportation spell? Luan was fascinated and stared at Mobai so intensely that he almost forgot to blink. However, after Mobai dispersed the halo, he suddenly turned his gaze towards Luan.
If Luan wasn’t so distracted and took time to observe the surroundings, he would find out that all other mystic creatures were busy with their own affairs. No other “person” paid attention to the halo, not because they didn’t like to gossip, but rather because… They couldn’t see it.
In fact, in the entire VIP waiting room, only he and Mobai could see the halo.
Mobai seemed confused and looked at Luan in silence. When he regain composure, he asked with a peaceful smile: “You… You could see it?”
Luan scratched his head, thinking he obviously could see everything – you were talking with someone in the halo! However, before he had time to reply, the second broadcast announced again that passengers to Boshlake City should board the train as soon as possible. Luan hurriedly got up, nodded towards Mobai, and quickly went towards the boarding gate. He rushed so fast that he missed Mobai’s laughter behind him. Mobai, feeling relieved, exclaimed: “It turned out to be him.”
The broadcast sounded the third time, and Luan trotted towards the platform, thinking why everyone was queueing up. He remembered that the last time lightnings and thunders rolled over Mount Tiandi, Liu Liu hid in his room, curled into a ball. Dragon Ying reassured him not to worry, as it was only the force of nature crossing heavens, not some magic spell. He taught them how to dodge Tian Lei’s bombs.
Right, what did the “Fairy Committee” they talked about mean? Why did the shadow man claim they were in decline? Had he ever met Panda Mobai before? He seemed so familiar, and yet he couldn’t remember any details… Ah, the human world is full of such weird things! With a sigh, Luan stumbled. When he straightened himself, he heard a loud shout behind him: “Hey, you red-haired guy!”
Luan turned and asked, confused: "You called me?”
A uniformed fairy ticket attendant rushed towards him and bluntly said: “Right, that’s you. Why are you running so fast? I almost couldn’t catch you.” Nearby, there were plenty of common people waiting to board the train and blocking his view, so the attendant motioned to Luan to come closer and whispered: "Let me remind you a few important things. First, do not lose your temporary pass. Second, once you get to Boshlake City, immediately go to the relevant office to apply for a temporary residence permit. Third, once you live there for a month you can apply for a permanent residence permit. Finally, the most important part – don’t make trouble on the train, don’t disturb humans. Do you understand me?”
Luan heard that the fairy’s tone was serious, so he repeatedly nodded in response. When he heard all of it, he shook his head in doubt: “Where is the relevant department?”
The fairy ticket attendant had to deal with all kinds of monsters that poured into the human world every day, so he didn’t have the patience to explain everything from scratch. He made an impatient face and said: "I don’t know! Ask someone who picks you up when you get off! Hey, show me your ticket and temporary permit!”
"Oh…" Luan handed them over and scratched his head: "I’ve just come to the human world and there are a lot of things I do not quite understand. I often get lost…"
He barely finished speaking that Luan realized the ticket attendant looked just like the fairy that had stamped his pass earlier. His looks quickly changed and with a whispered “Oh, crap” he handed Luan his stuff back.
"Oh, well, you flatter me" – the attendant changed his manners and smiled apologetically: "It’s typical for newcomers. Everything’ll be fine once you get familiar. Well, since you’re not familiar with this world I’ll give you a word of caution. Get off when the train door opens, and you’ll be right in Boshlake City. Take care and have a nice trip!”
He finished speaking and the green train’s door shut with a loud thump. Behind the window, Luan vigorously waved his hand and shouted out to the fairy ticket attendant: “Bye!”
Luan didn’t know why both fairy attendants changed their manners so suddenly, but he thought the human world was livelier and more fun than he had imagined. Such a pity Dragon Ying never allowed him or Liu Liu get down the mountain. If he had come here earlier, would he have seen even more fascinating things?
The train was speeding up with a loud clamor, and the scene outside the window quickly disappeared behind. Luan was standing in the doorway to the corridor. He brushed away hair from his forehead, pulled out the pass from his pocket and started to fiddle with it.
That Mr. Mobai had mentioned some “permanent residence permit”, but what he had was a “temporary pass”. Luan traced his fingertips along the edges of the card, and found small golden words imprinted along the top edge – “Only for Permanent Residents of Mountain Yin”. Below, there was Luan’s mystic beast pattern and his passport photo in human form. Those two pictures were side-by-side in the center of the card. The description below his mystic beast profile said: “Luan, age unknown, vouched by Dragon Ying”. The one below his human photo was: “Zhu Luan, sdult human form, 20 years old”.
Luan was moving around, when a train attendant with a book in his hand approached and demanded: “Tickets please! Your ID card and tickets.”
