The common phenomenon of “fighting to pay the check” may seem very strange to non-Chinese, but that’s just the surface. The real deal behind “fighting” is relations between people, which plays an essential role in the organising and functioning of Chinese society.
When insisting on paying, on the one hand, you are showing that you care about the relationship between you and the other person by doing favours. On the other hand, since you are willingly giving out favours, next time the other person can have his turn to return the favours. In this way, the relationship can keep going by giving and taking back and forth. In this sense, paying the check has more to do with cultural gestures/symbols than financial concerns.
Of course, as in every society, there are also people who could care less about all this social rules.
