Lynn blinked as she realized she was surrounded by maids.
"Okay, what's going on here?" she said, resting her back against the headboard of the small bed they had given her.
A young maid with pigtails leaned forward excitedly.
"Are you really Lord Theo's betrothed?" he asked her.
"She doesn't look anything like a noblewoman. She's common," another maid said, hands at her waist.
"Oh, dear me, is she Lord Caniro's illegitimate daughter?" whispered a third.
What? That doesn't make any sense.
Lynn blinked, trying to answer, but she didn't have time. A fourth servant jumped forward, her eyes popping with excitement.
"She might be a lost princess! Or a cursed daughter of some fallen duke!"
Lynn looked at her, eyes rolling.
Fine, now you're just making up theories from a novel.
"It's none of that. I am merely the fiancée of Duke Theodore Caniro," she said, trying not to lose her temper.
The maids looked at her for a second without saying anything and then started asking her questions.
"How did you two meet?"
"Did he propose with flowers?"
"You bumped into him by accident and he fell in love with you at first sight?"
"Did he save your life and say 'I'll marry you, woman!'?"
"Stop it!" she said loudly.
The maids stopped talking and waited for her answer with eyes that gleamed with curiosity while Lynn felt her head spin.
Lynn took a deep breath.
"The truth is..."
...that Theo had given her money to play his fiancée, dragged her to the mansion to hide her from an angry landlord, and now she was in a situation that even she didn't fully understand.
But she couldn't say that.
So she just sighed.
"It's... a complicated story."
"So it was romantic!"
"No!"
"Yes it was!"
"My God, Miss Lynn is shy!"
"At least tell us if he did kiss you!"
"WHAT?" Lynn blushed.
Before the maids could parse her sentence, the door opened abruptly.
Evans stood in the doorway, his arms crossed.
"Don't you have work to do?"
The maids shook themselves out of their seats and ran out of the room.
"We are sorry, Mr. Evans!"
When they were finally alone, Lynn collapsed on the bed, her head buried in the pillow.
"Thank you so much for saving me today! I owe you one," she said, still buried in the pillow.
Evans laughed mockingly and set the dress he'd brought for her on the edge of the bed.
"I'll remember that, Miss Lynn, but now you need to get up."
"Why?"
"Didn't Duke Theo tell you about the dinner with his parents today?"
Lynn jumped out of bed so abruptly that the pillow fell to the floor.
"TODAY?"
"Did you forget?"
"No, I just... didn't think it would be so soon!"
Lynn reached for her head, trying to process the information.
"What should I do now?"
"Just be yourself. Remember what our plan is: make the duke's parents have doubts about your engagement. It will be easy since you've never taken lessons in good manners."
Lynn sighed. It was true, her role was too easy, but she wanted to do as well as she could.
Evans left the room to let her get ready. She got out of bed and began to get ready. The dress looked simple but the quality of it indicated it was expensive. It was a pastel orange color and the sleeves were trimmed with white lace. The collar was of the same lace as well.
She put on the dress Evans had left for her and somehow tried to comb her hair with her hands. She looked in the mirror one last time to encourage herself and left the room.
Waiting for her outside was Evans with Theo who had just come in to escort her to the dining room.
In the dining room, Theo's parents were already seated at the large table and the servants were serving their dinner.
Lady Elvira looked excited, while Lord Raphael had his usual cold expression and was watching her with a look of judgment.
Lynn took a seat beside Theo and looked at them with a smile.

Lynn, a girl who is willing to help him (for the right payment, of course).
But instead of causing scandal, Lynn unexpectedly wins over the Duke's family, who see her as the perfect match to shake up his structured life. As their fake engagement drags on, the Duke finds himself drawn to her unpredictable charms, while Lynn enjoys teasing him far more than he expected.
