Police and criminals, atheists and believers, all unite to confront the threat of the false goddess Verrill and her army of genetically modified humans. With them, she plans to replace everyone else in her new theocratic-fascist interplanetary empire. After a period of peace, the allies lack weapons and must join forces with the supposedly dead and freedom-loving renegade from the past, Michal. He possesses an old but still powerful space Dreadnought, giving them a fighting chance against Verrill's own dreadnought, which she intends to use to begin her violent, planet-spanning reform.
But how does Dan, Michal's great-grandson, fit into all this? He's been living a normal life on Earth, only to be pulled into the unfolding events by Michal. What are Michal's plans for him? Could time travel play a role, or is it about the beautiful alien Lirin, who recently suffered a severe mental trauma because of Verrill?
On one level, it's a simple and relatively straightforward story, but on another, it's not quite so simple.
