It had been two months since Garvin last visited his Nephew. And something had troubled him since his last visit. And it wasn't so much Dusty, that had been on his mind.
It was Millie, Dusty's Carer!
Why this young girl bothered him so much, he couldn't really figure out!
Sure she was young, around 23 or so. But she had been recommended, had cared for her ill mother.
When he had, discussed the situation with Dusty, Dusty had just nodded and signed that he was happy with her around. It had all seemed to be going well.
It was her face that Garvin seemed unable to push from his mind. He wished he had a photo of her. Something he could study, and try to figure it out!
The thing that kept coming into his mind was just too painful, and he kept pushing it away!
He couldn't talk to his wife about it! She wouldn't be able to cope, if he bought that up again! If he reminded her of those painful memories, it would just hurt her!
Violet, was sitting in her garden, quietly reading.
He walked over and placed a kiss against her cheek, she looked up and smiled at him. He would have been pleased, but that smile that she so often gave him, was just a gesture. It never seemed to shine as brightly as it had used to, it never reached her eyes, or glowed upon her face. It was a smile that hid a great sadness.
Is that the same smile, that he used? He presumed it probably was!
When Dusty had left their home two years ago, she had become more despondent.
He knew she missed Dusty, but she wouldn't come with him to visit! He had stopped trying to get her to leave. Their home was her sanctuary, Her garden, her only comfort. So he let her enjoy it.
He would visit Dusty today, he hadn't let Dusty know he was coming, but what did it matter? Dusty never left home, except to go to the Cafe, up the beach from his home.
This time he would insist, Dusty come back and visit his Aunt! It had been too long!
His Wife, and his Nephew were too similar in this regard. Both never wanting to leave the place, where they felt the most comfortable! Both so stubborn! It was hard to believe they weren't both, blood related!
Will you be OK, if I go and visit Dusty today?
Violet smiled again! - Of course! I will make something nice for dinner, while you are away! Give Dusty my love!
Garvin cupped her cheek, - I will just be a few hours! I love you!
I love you too!
This statement, like her smile, seemed watered down! Could he even believe her? Did she really mean it? Sure she looked after him, and their home. But everything she did just seemed automatic. She just quietly went about her routine everyday!
Leaving the house that day, Garvin had no inkling of the events that would soon unfold.
Knocking on the Door of Dusty's house, Garvin waited. Where was Millie?
Nothing but silence.
It was 12.30 Dusty should be back home by now having his Lunch.
Making his way down the side of the house, he climbed the stairs to the back Veranda. Dusty's room was locked, he peeked in through the partially opened curtains. Dusty's room was in disarray. Bedding and clothing scattered on the floor. Was Millie not doing her job?
Dusty was obviously not there. Where could they be?
Garvin forced himself to stay calm! But this was so out of the ordinary! He couldn't help but be worried.
If Dusty wasn't here, could he still be at the Cafe? Only one way to find out!
Entering the Cafe, he was a little surprised to see it empty. Shouldn't this be the Lunch rush hour?
A young lady rushed out of the Kitchen. She started to say something, looked startled! Asked him to take a seat, then before he could ask anything, dashed back out to the Kitchen.
What was going on? He couldn't see Dusty anywhere! Should he just leave?
He could hear voices coming from the Kitchen. Oh well!, he took a seat near the closed glass doors at the rear. And gazed out to sea!
It really was a lovely place, the view so calming, maybe he would ask for a coffee. Sit for a while and then try Dusty's place again later.
Out in the Kitchen, four young people stood looking at each other.
What should they do?
Dusty was unsure, if he could really believe Millie! Did she know about his Uncle's past? Was she making this up? If she was, what benefit did it have to her?
He had heard the story about his Cousin, going missing! Possibly Kidnapped, when she was 4 years old. Could Millie really be that little girl, that went missing so many years ago?
He had only been a toddler then, he had never really known her. He had been told the basic details, when he had been taken in by his Aunt and Uncle. He had been asked not to mention it in front of his Aunt.
His Aunt had become like a mother to him, he knew he was loved. Even so he could see her sadness, no matter how much she had tried to hide it from him.
If Millie really was his family, she might be able to heal his Aunt's broken heart!
If he took her out to his Uncle now, what would the reaction be? Would his Uncle recognize her? He had seen her a couple of times already, he had never said anything then.
But then again, Millie had grown and changed, of course she would look different!
Star, looked at Millie. - Dusty want's to take you to his Uncle!
Three faces looked to Star. Dusty frowned!
Millie looked from Star to Dusty in question.
Dusty nodded and held out his hand to her. Star had voiced his decision before he had even known it himself!
Her hand shook as she took Dusty's. Then he was pulling her out of the kitchen, towards where her Father sat.
She was suddenly afraid! Would her Father, know her? Believe her? Could she find enough proof to convince him? And she had a lot of questions too, would he be able to answer them?
Garvin turned as he heard footsteps coming towards him. He was surprised to see, Dusty walking hand in hand with Millie! But it was their faces, that had him instantly worried. Dusty was frowning, and Millie had tears in her eyes and a look of fear. What had happened, something serious?
He waited for them both to sit.
Worried, Luna and Star watched on from the behind the counter. Close enough to hear the conversation and help if needed.
Dusty sat next to Millie, they still held hands, both needing support and reassurance.
Had these two, gotten themselves caught up in some sort of romance? Garwin looked at their clutched hands! But could this account for their expressions? He was puzzled!
He signed to Dusty, while asking aloud - Are you two dating?
Dusty and Millie both baulked at this suggestion, and pulled their hands apart. - Dusty rushing to sign - No!. And Millie sprouting - God No! - Just as quickly!
Garvin's eyebrows rose at this response.
I am dating someone else! - Dusty signed as he glanced quickly at Star! - Besides, I could never date my cousin!
Dusty! - Millie elbowed him in the side. She knew the sign for Cousin. Why had he blurted it out like that?
Cousin? Had Dusty signed that correctly? Garwin looked from Dusty to Millie. They were both staring at him, as if gauging his reaction! Had Dusty meant to say Cousin after all? He turned to Dusty, his head spinning, and signed - Cousin?
Dusty slowly nodded and signed again - Yes Cousin!
Garvin turned to look at Millie again, a question in his furrowed brows. He studied her face! Taking in all of the features, that he had been puzzling over the last couple of months. Could this be her? His heart began to pound, tingles ran up his neck to his brain!
Millie stared into her Father's face, he was concentrating so hard! Was he trying to recognize her? Would he be able to? Did she have any resemblance to either him, or her birth mother? She had no idea!
Millie? - Garvin let the name hover in the air.
Should she correct him? Millie took a deep breath and replied with a tear escaping her eye!
No! You used to call me Rose Bud! - Tears came faster now as the memories from her dream flooded her mind. She recalled the warmth of his arms as he had cradled her, and suddenly longed for that feeling again! The warmth of a loving parent!
Garvin gasped! Rose Bud! Her words echoed in his head! But it wasn't just that, with her tears her face had transformed. He was now looking at Violet's face, there were slight differences, but that face was still too similar! Was this really his sweet little girl, his Rose Bud?
Tears gathered as his heart squeezed! He stood, moved to Millie and pulled her up and into his arms.
Millie clung to him, soaking in the warmth that she remembered. It wasn't like hugging a stranger, even though that is what he essentially was. He was familiar, to be in his arms like this again, just felt right!
Dusty looked on, tears mingled with his smile! He hadn't understood all of their exchange, honestly they had barely spoken any words. But somehow they had just known. They had both recognized each other! How was this possible? It had to be some sort of miracle, didn't it?
He had been living with his, long lost cousin for the last six months without even knowing it. Had Millie known all this time? Somehow he didn't think she had known. How then? Was it Fate or Destiny?
It seemed that ever since the new neighbors had moved in next door. Miraculous things just kept on happening!
The more he thought about it, the more his head ached. Maybe he should just accept it all, it was just easier!
He shook his head and smiled! He looked over to where Star, held Luna in a soft embrace.
Star grinned at him and winked!
