I gathered the group's rubbish from the cold picnic table and absently threw it into the nearest bin. Before I could turn back around, Hazel was calling out to me. “Uh, Elvis? I think you might be needed.”
I joined their small group with pressed brows, trying to follow their perplexed gazes. Before I could see what they were looking at, I heard it.
“Could you actually look interested instead of looking at your phone?” Jacie’s voice cut through the charming, happy atmosphere. It wasn't quite a shout but it was enough to turn heads.
“I'm just reading things. I'm still listening to your constant rambling.” Dan doesn't quite shout back.
Jacie looks very offended, honestly rightly so. “Have you lost interest in me? Because it damn feels like it!”
“No, you're just too clingy. We don't have to be together every minute of the day, you know.”
“As if we ever are! I even had to drag you out today!” And the yelling starts.
Despite the sudden beating of my heart trying to keep me still, I jogged over, holding my hands up as a peaceful surrender. “Hey, slow down guys. What happened?”
Jacie took a hold of my shoulders, almost hiding behind me. “Dan's being a dick! Tell him off for me!”
I looked at Dan, who was looking between the two of us. He huffed, folded his arms. “You're with Elvis more than you're with me! Which is almost suspicious.” He glared.
Jacie scoffed, pushing me away. “Are you accusing us? Seriously?”
“I'm just pointing out how weird it is.”
“Did you forget that he's gay? Or have you spent so little time with me that you've forgotten about my vagina?”
“I was at your house 2 days ago!”
My useless attention was pulled away by someone's snickering getting closer. I glanced to my side, at Aaron standing with a hand over his mouth. His eyes gleamed with the lights and his own amusement. I kicked his foot.
“This isn't funny– where did you come from?” I asked.
Aaron waved me away, not tearing his eyes away from the fuming couple.
“If you don't want to be around me then I'll leave! You've been so fucking cold and uncaring. Don't call me tonight! And you can take Turp back!” Jacie yelled, throwing her reindeer at Dan's feet. She soon took off running, passed all the people watching them and down the nearby street.
Dan grumbled something I couldn't catch as he picked the muddy plushie up a little harsher than he needed to. His eyes met mine for a brief second, and then he walked into the dark field. I don't think I could describe the emotions swirling within them.
The music was unchanged yet it somehow felt much quieter.
What did I just witness?
They've always had bumps in their relationship, I figured it was just because of their loud personalities and inability to keep their thoughts in their respective minds. But their little spats usually aren't so loud – or public.
Before I could pull my phone out to dial Jacie's number, Aaron threw an arm around my shoulder, laughing away like there was nothing to care about.
“I came at the weirdest time! What was she saying about her vagina?”
“Aaron,” I grumbled, throwing his arm away. “That was serious!”
“Yeah, Aaron, you're being a di– mean. About this.” That voice almost made me more tense.
“Oh great, and now Samantha's here.” I sighed.
“Sammy. You can just call me Sammy.” She was definitely glaring at me. I could tell, not that I would look at her. “How childish of them to argue at a fair of all places.” She commented with a tut.
That brought my eyes to her. “Childish?”
“Though I guess I feel bad for Jacie. Men can really suck.”
“Oh, you're so full of it! You have no idea what that fight was about.” I said, my face scrunched and my heart beat a little faster. Who would've guessed that the first thing I said to Sammy in almost a year is that.
Her glare turned into a glower and her cheeks flushed an angry red. “Don't start with me! Not in front of Ruby!” She said with her hands wrapped comfortably around Ruby's ears, down in the pram beneath her. Despite the tension in the air, Ruby was smiling her dazzling smile.
I so wanted to retort back, to tell Sammy exactly how I think of her in the kind of language she would crucify me for. But if it weren't for Ruby's cute, innocent face, then it would've been for the tug on my arm, powerful enough to drag me away.
I was confused, sure, but also relieved to look at anyone other than Samantha. Or so I thought.
“Calm,” Harvey said slowly, steering me away, “down.”
