The cold, damp air of the cave hit me like a wave as I ventured further inside. An eerie sound pulsed ahead, vibrating along the rocky walls. Each step felt heavier like something deep within the cave was pulling me forward and urging me closer.
The tunnel narrowed, squeezing me in before opening up again as the path twisted and turned. The steady drip of water echoed through the stillness, but the silence surrounding me weighed the heaviest. My torch flickered with every breath of cold air, barely enough to light the way.
Faint markings adorned the stone walls—strange symbols I couldn’t make out. I squinted at them, trying to make sense of their shapes, but they shifted every time I thought I had, fading just out of reach.
The deeper I went, the stronger the sensation grew, and a strange thought crept into my mind: the cave was watching me.
A flicker of movement at the edge of my vision froze me in place.
In the corner of my eye, just beyond the torchlight, a dark figure stood still, its outline barely visible against the rocky backdrop.
I couldn’t move. My pulse thundered in my ears. The figure didn’t speak or step forward—it just loomed there. It felt… wrong, like a shadow cast by something inhumane.
Gripping the torch tighter, I turned slowly toward it. But before I could make out its shape, the figure melted into the darkness, vanishing as if it had never been there.
A chill crawled, but I forced myself to move forward. There was no turning back now.
The tunnel seemed endless, winding more deeply into the earth. My heart raced as I pressed on; when the path finally opened into a vast chamber, the light hit me like a physical force.
The glow was blinding, filling the space with an ethereal blue that seemed to ripple and shift like water.
And then I saw it.
Suspended in midair, spinning slowly, was a crystal, unlike anything I’d ever seen.
It was flawless, its surface smooth and glistening with a blue energy that seemed alive. Tendrils of light rippled out from it, crawling across the chamber walls in slow, hypnotic waves. My breath hitched as I stared, unable to process what I saw. The cave felt alive, and the crystal was its beating heart.
My feet moved without my permission. Each step felt lighter like gravity loosened its hold on me. I could feel it deep inside, a pull that made my chest ache, like the crystal calling to me.
When I reached it, my hand trembled as I lifted it. My fingers hovered just above the crystal’s surface. Fear flickered in the back of my mind—a warning I couldn’t quite place.
But the pull was more potent. I couldn’t stop myself.
The glow intensified, the tendrils of light snaking closer to me. A cold tingle ran up my arm, making me hesitate.
And then I touched it.
The entire cave shuddered when my fingers brushed the crystal’s surface.
A deep, resonant hum filled the air, vibrating in my bones. The crystal pulsed with energy, and before I could pull back, a wave of light surged outward. My feet left the ground, and I gasped as I was lifted.
My torch clattered to the stone floor far below, but I barely noticed. The light wrapped around me, binding me in its grip.
The tendrils of energy slithered into my body, seeping into my veins and lighting them up like molten metal. The power coursed through me, overwhelming and endless, filling every corner of my being. My chest heaved, my muscles tightened, and my mind screamed as the energy consumed me.
I couldn’t move. My eyes widened, glowing the same blue as the crystal, and I felt my hair lift, weightless and untethered. I tried to scream, but no sound came out.
It was too much.
The light blurred everything around me, dissolving the chamber into a wash of blue. I was drowning in it. The crystal’s energy was infinite, and for one terrible moment, I thought it would swallow me whole.
Then, as suddenly as it began, it stopped.
The light dimmed. Gravity returned, and I plummeted to the ground.
Pain shot through me as I hit the stone floor hard. My body ached like I’d been crushed, but the sensation of the crystal’s power still lingered beneath my skin, pulsing faintly.
Darkness closed in, and the world faded.
“Renjiro! Renjiro, wake up!”
A voice pierced through the fog in my mind, faint at first but growing louder. Someone was shaking me.
I groaned, my eyes fluttering open. My body felt like it had been torn apart and stitched back together, and my head throbbed. The cave swam in and out of focus, but I could make out Kaelan’s pale face hovering over me.
“Thank goodness,” he said, his voice shaky. “What happened? Where did you go?”
I sat up slowly, every muscle screaming in protest. My mind raced with the memory of the crystal, of the energy surging through me. I glanced around, trying to find it.
The chamber was dim again, and the blinding light was reduced to a faint glow in the distance. The crystal lay on the cold stone floor, its energy diminished.
“I—I don’t know,” I said, my voice hoarse. “I followed the light, and then…” I trailed off, shaking my head.
Kaelan frowned, worry etched into his face. “I searched everywhere for you! You just disappeared, and then I heard something… strange. Are you sure you’re okay?”
I wasn’t sure of anything. My body felt different, lighter as if something had changed deep inside me. I could still feel the strange energy pulsing faintly in my veins, like a second heartbeat.
Kaelan helped me to my feet as my legs wobbled beneath me. “Come on,” he said urgently. “Let’s get out of here. This place isn’t right.”
Still dazed, I nodded and followed him toward the exit. Each step felt strange, the ground beneath my feet somehow unreal.
As we neared the edge of the forest, I faltered.
Beyond the trees, in the distance, something shifted.
A figure. Watching.
I froze, my breath catching. It was the figure I’d seen in the cave, standing silently at the edge of the clearing.
I blinked, and it was gone.
